Strongly influenced by the play Thunderstorm by Cau Yu, Curse of the Golden Flower tells the story of family, forbidden love, and betrayal in the Imperial Court in ancient China.

This is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. And I mean visually stunning. Each frame is like a picture. The colors are well balanced and vibrant. Liberties are taken with historical accuracy, in order to present this atmosphere that blends fantasy and realistic history. It features wonderfully performed music that fits its "fantastical history" feel. The story line is melodramatic, but I think that would appeal to us read more drama addicts :)

Yun-Fat Chow does an amazing job of inviting you in to his character while keeping a cool and aloof distance. Li Gong does well as the Empress, but the rest of the cast is unmemorable.

In a nutshell: Visually appealing if you like bright, ornate visuals, but may be too flashy for some. The story is melodramatic which can sometimes be boring.

This movie is well loved by me and my family. Because this movie is filled with action and suspense. The movie has an awesome chain of events that lead to an equally awesome ending. Well in reality the ending is controversial to me because I loved it but I also thought of a different one that could have been equally as awesome maybe even a little better. Not many people watch this read more movie maybe because it may not sound like much but if you see it I guarantee you will love it and watch it again and again.

In both movies, a conspiracy is taking place to dethrone the king. There is more action in Curse of the Golden Flower though.

Both movies are period movies and the action is taking place in the palace where ploting is rampant.

This whole movie was very weird, being slowly dramatic with the music and each scene. The only positive was the really great costumes and setting.

Has there ever been a chinese movie where a rebellion succeeded? Cause I'm beginning to think these communists deliberately influenced these movies to kill any glimpse of fantasy or hope in people.

WOW was I impressed! The colours had my eyes glued to the screen. The passion didnot let me look away despite the blood & disturbing characters. And the craziness, my type of craziness. Hate and love and all those complicated ones that come in between turned up to the max turning people insane.
