"The Executioner" imagines what would happen if the death penalty were resumed. Unfortunately, the process involves more than just greasing up the rusty execution equipment. On the final day, executioners discover that they are not simply carrying out a routine but changing the course of life. They continue the grueling job, but something in the executioners' hearts bother them as time goes by.

Good anti death penalty film told from the perspective of the executioners and the mental toll it takes on them. The performances far outclassed the material in this movie though. The script was not bad, it's just that the actors were far better. No Maundy Thursday. Still, thought provoking in it's own way. There are no easy answers to the ongoing debate of the death penalty, but I find it abhorrent that we expect one human being to kill another and have them live with that fact. I don't see how it cannot affect them in terrible ways unless they are no better than the people who perpetrated the crimes in the first place. So the burden that puts on another human being, to perform these killings, is pretty horrific. I cannot imagine, even when sanctioned by the government, and even knowing that the person you are killing is an evil monster, what damage that must do to a person when having to intentionally kill another human being. I suppose there are those who can do such a thing without thought, but....how? As with so many Korean films, the purpose and message behind the film is sometimes more important than the film itself. There are many thought provoking questions that come to mind when the question of the death penalty is involved.

I just finished watching this today, it is so boring - I was just waiting for it to get over with...and there were a few scenes that DID NOT need to be in the movie - disgusting.
