I made a vow to write a review immediately after the show ended and believe me when I say the emotions are still raw. Where do I even start? Eternal Love is such a compelling and beautiful piece I don't think I can find the exact words to describe it.

The story is brilliant in itself and I am honestly sure it did the book justice. I think if you're watching this read more without reading the book beforehand, you would love the show a lot more because you're watching without expectations plus either way, Eternal Love will blow you away (even if you're not a fantasy/xianxia/historical genre kind of person) Also, If you like The Journey of Flower, you will love this without a doubt.

Everything, every single thing is so stunning from the costumes, to the set and the cinematography. And the most beautiful part is, of course, their love story. The different clans coming together and all the magical elements and all are very interesting. I won't delve into the story too much because its pretty complicated but fear not, you will never be bored of it for a second.

The acting was spectacular. Yang Mi did a fantastic job as always. Although it was my first time watching Mark Chao, his character as either Mo Yuan or Ye Hua is so easily to fall in love with because he is that good at acting. Chemistry was flawless. A transparent love was beautifully portrayed; you could feel their love and pain and share their happiness. Kiss scenes are very good too. They're not exactly rough but tender and deep? I honestly did not expect so many kiss scenes because I was quite disappointed with the lack of intimacy in The Journey of Flower but you're blessed here :')

Every other character was very likeable having their own unique personalities. The other side characters and love stories are also super sweet especially Dong Hua's and Feng Jui's.

It seems like everything about the drama is perfect even its music is so apt. The entire OST is so enchanting played at right timings. The duet is so haunting which really gives Bai Qian & Ye Hua moments that goosebumps. So, so good.

The only problem I have (not with the drama) is that I hate misunderstandings that cause conflicts in a relationship which my heart cannot handle. Ye Hua and Bai Qian's relationship has many 'tragedies' that can really break your heart because they've been through so many tribulations caused by some side bitches but in the end, everything for this drama is worth it.

Rewatch it? Definitely. No qualms about it.

This is truly a masterpiece and I can safely say Eternal Love is my favourite C-Drama.

Probably the first time a drama of this length has me thoroughly enthusiastic from beginning to end. More rare is the case of a drama adaptation not only breathing life to its book, but surpasses the original work in every aspect. The challenge is to stop oneself from the binge to see how this karmic game of fate, love, misunderstanding and tragedy takes three 'lifetimes' to resolve. Even if fantasy is not read more one's cup of tea, the love/romance here is one everyone can enjoy

*Story (10/10)
This drama has done a wondrous job keeping faithful to the original story while incorporating parts of its spinoff "The Pillow Book" about the secondary lead pairing. The Chinese title of this drama is "Three Lives Three Worlds: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms" and like its name suggests, tells the story of Ye Hua and Bai Qian - gods who are separated yet bounded by fate to find each other in their lives again throughout the course of three arcs, for a memorable journey of emotional highs and lows balanced with good action and drama. Though there are 58 episodes, it is filled with plots to leave one consistently guessing what the next development is from beginning to end.
Just as one score settles, another rises.

Characters are fleshed out and although the main couple gets the bulk of the focus, secondary characters and their relationships are not cheated out of a good storyline either.

*Acting/Cast: (9/10)
Yang Mi's Bai Qian may be the protagonist, but Mark Chao is the highlight. To express so much with so little is what Mark does wonderfully, and his ability to portray two similar characters (Ye Hua & Mo Yuan) so differently with their set of own characteristics, mannerisms and reactions is impressive. As for Yang Mi overall she did well portraying the different personalities of her characters - from playful, mischievous Si Yin to naive and innocent Su Su and finally the aloof with an attitude Bai Qian - by far her best performance. Together these two produce the chemistry to keep audiences thrilled and satisfied. Overall the cast is well put together with several other memorable faces (Zhang Bin Bin, Dilraba etc) making the drama that much more enjoyable

*Last thoughts?
- All the sets, props, scenery and people are simply eye-catching, which keeps one visually interested all the way through.
- Aside from the visual fest and story, Mark Chao is another reason to rewatch

It's been a while since I enjoyed a romance-fantasy genre this much, this will be going straight into my archive of favorites. No doubt one of the best Chinese dramas have to offer

Boss & Me got me started on my love for Mainland dramas which lead to finding Xianxa through Zao Zanilia's Journey of Flower through to Eternal Love.

Both dramas feature male leads who are powerful and cold to start of with but when they fell for the female lead they never deviated. Ye Hua and Feng Teng were the definition of 'Laser-focused'... there wasn't even a hint of a chance for the female love rivals (not that I felt at all sorry for either)

They both acknowledge the romance and couple up very early on, none of this dragging out will they-won't-they business and work through their problems with varying degrees of maturity and success. Both happy endings too. You will fall for both dramas OTPs like a ten-ton brick.

Fabulous chemistry and solid acting. Yang Mi and Zhao Zanilia are both adorable and beautiful and most importantly THEY CAN ACT. Mark Chao is also specially amazing.

Those put off by CGI don't be, its inconsequential and the plot and characters will be what you care about. I've got to say though EL had better cast of characters (It seems like there are hundreds but I loved all of them) than Boss & Me. I watched both dramas twice each now and will probably watch EL again in the near future.

Both star Yang Mi as the lead female and she is as good as expected.

Both have enduring love as a main theme. There's even a separation of our OTPs with both EL and YAMS. Also a forced/contrived cohabitation after finding each other again.

In both you can feel our OTPs almost unbearable pull towards each other. Male leads in both have amazing chemistry with Yang Mi's characters and both can be forceful and imposing(kissing scenes in both the drama and the movie was scorching) but show their gentle sides too. Huang Xiaoming and Mark Chao both have the most amazing jawlines though Mark is undoubtedly the better actor.

EL had the best soundtrack I've heard in a while but there is also YAMS' OST: Silent by Na Ying that stood out. If you're still hung up over EL give YAMS a try if you have 2 hours to spare.

I have probably gone insane. I'm re-watching this for the second time now. How come it is more entertaining to watch the more I watch it. This drama deserves the rating it has, I think they should make a sequel.

    • Reply
      Mimi May 18, 2017

I would definitely watch the sequel if only all the actors are there again I hate it when it's a "sequel" but the cast is like totally different like it doesn't feel the same anymore. Also it's so annoying when they replace the original cast with some that cannot act at all as the leads

    • Reply
      Reta May 18, 2017

100% agree with that. We already got attached to the actors we know. The sequel may even feel fake if the actors are replaced.

      Mimi May 18, 2017

Ik like how can they call it a sequel when it's a totally different cast and sometimes a different storyline. Like they're just using the name to get attention from the fans of the original drama

I'm sorry to say this but most c dramas are very fake they edit the videos really badly especially when it comes to supernatural things. I'm sick of that but I want to try this drama out so I want to ask those who are watching it; does this drama make you cringe?

I can see where your coming from. I tried to watch a lot of other korean and Chinese fantasy genres ut couldn't get through it bc of the supernatural edits. However, this show is sooo good and the edits are NOT cringe worthy at all. The plot is soo good that I'm sure you'll love it all <3

I think for some people, the drama is really confusing during the first few episodes, but that's because they set up the plot and introduce all the characters which is super important for later episodes. I think most people started really liking it at like episode 12/13 (I honestly liked it from the beginning but everyone has different tastes) but the drama definitely picks up!! :D

Most Cdramas move slowly compared to Kdramas ( 16 episodes) but that is the beauty of it, I reckon. You get to know the characters better.

DEFINITELY! I am oo glad I watched it. The stroyline is realllllyyy good and it might be slow in the beginning, but it picks up fast. Chinese dramas are typically slower since they're longer and set up more f the plot and scene in the beginning, but yes it is definitely worth it!

Ye, who complained there is nothing to watch after 3L3W, read this:

    1. Have ye checked out the top rated dramas on this site? In terms of C-dramas, there are only two rated +9.0 in the top list (of this site): Nirvana in Fire (9.2) and 3L3W (9.1)

    2. 3L3W actually borrowed some stuff from Nirvana in Fire (helping the most benign Prince to become the King instead of the scheming/plotting one, using a seductive drug on a royalty figure, scheming Imperial Consort getting demoted (ie. Sujin), etc.)

    • Reply
      cgaman May 9, 2017

@Tongko, buddy. You must differentiate 'derived inspiration from' and 'direct rip-off of.' Guess which category 3L3W/EL belongs to?

    • Reply
      Tongko May 10, 2017 - edited

lets compare this main plot, duke of mount deer and nirvana in fire..

wei xiaobao can't fight, solve various impossible matters using his brain, strategy and cunning
lin shu can't fight either, also using his brain, strategy and cunninng..

wei xiaobao become leader of heaven and earth society,
lin shu become leader of jiang zuo alliance.

wei xiaobao childhood friend is prince kang xi of qing dynasty, later become emperor
lin shu childhood friend is prince jing of southern liang dynasty, later become emperor too

wei xiaobao help prince kang zi gaining more power, crush the rebellion
lin shu help prince jing, gaining more power and stop the rebellion

in the end, wei xiaobao help qing dynasty war against russian empire,
in the end, lin shu also help southern liang dynasty war against nothern wei.

now then, which one is the direct rip-off?

how about gulong works, meteor butterfly sword, is it rip off from the godfather?

hana kimi? the great william shakespeare wrote twelfth night about love story a girl disguised as a boy stuff in year 1600..
is it a rip off too??

see, similarity always happens in drama..
as long its less than 80% similarity, than its a new story..

    • Reply
      namopanik May 10, 2017 - edited

MCs personalities seem vastly different. Unability to fight is related to his illness, he was a fighter before. I don't see the revenge part neither.
Now I'm confused again, are you asking seriously which is a rip-off? Because one is REWRITTEN with only changing one of the main character's sex, the other shares some common plot points typical for those kind of stories.

    • Reply
      RejaulHoque May 10, 2017

Dont understand whats the big deal about the story having similarities. I wouldnt mind watching a story if its a complete copy of another as long as the end result is as good as NIF was. I have read or seen so many stories that its easy to always find similarities in new ones. The story actually has a very small percentage on a show being success or failure, its rather a combination of production, acting and directing which matters most and also a reason why NIF became such success. There are a lot of shows which had a very good story but has bad ratings because they failed on those aspects which resulted in bad execution. Given different circumstances and both EL and NiF could have been flop. So instead of comparing just relish on the fact that they became masterpieces of chinese tv.

    • Reply
      Tongko May 10, 2017 - edited

That is exactly my poin.. whats the big deal?? if they have similarity above 80% then you can say it cleverly disguised, borrowed from, etc.. if not, its just a new story with similar character or event, etc..

      @namopanik
you missing my point, its not a question.. its sarcasm to my buddy cgaman..

The difficult part is getting the video. Doesn't matter if the vid is subbed or not cuz subscene will fill that void.
