I finished watching and I must say.. WOW.
It´s a really good series, you have to watch it. It has action and everything, and i love dramas that are in ancient times. The are good actors, and the plot is just awesome. They have a good friendship but they are both in different groups so it can´t be. But they are together for as long as possible.
I really loved the series read more so you should watch it, it´s a really storyand my fav episode is episode 6, I mean just. wow! I loved that episode so much. the last episode was a little confusing for me (how it ended) but I really hope there will be a sequel so I know what will happen because It´s a really good series.
I recommend that you at least begin watching it and see if it´s to your liking :)

STORY: Besides what's in the description above, I'll add that this is a drama that takes place in China during an "anti-Japanese" war with two factions fighting against one another. There is a lot of covert plots, espionage, secret service, and all that great stuff. This series was really gripping. I was glued for a 15 episode binge.

Total run time: approx 5h 23m. Each episode is around 18-22 minutes long but read more have 5 minutes of credits and in some cases another minute of what happened last episode. Take that all out and the run time is a lot shorter. Easy to binge in one setting with the fast-forward button.

ACTING/CAST: Same basic cast that is in Love Is More Than a Word. So it was nice to see them in different parts. They all do a great job. I totally loved Lu Zhou in both dramas and in this one he's a gun-wielding bad-ass. Also, the villian, Gu Han, from The Fairy Fox makes a cameo in one episode; see if you can spot him.

MUSIC: It was great actually. It made this show seem like a sweeping epic.

REWATCH VALUE: Of course! This is a great show with so much intrigue I need to watch it again.

OVERALL: Amazing production value. Shot in full 1080p! The sets and costume design are spectacular. It's a gorgeous production. I wish each episode was longer: credits just chew up so much screen time. For those looking for the BL aspect, there isn't anything overt but maybe something will happen in season 2.

It's sort of a prequel-sequel thing with basically the same prime cast.

I hope there's a season 2, i mean, with that kind of ending, I won't be satisfied until one of them confesses

is it just me or are the episodes really short, they are all maybe 25 minutes long and that is with the opening theme and the ending theme with a teaser for the next episode. Is the version on youtube cut?

I'm on episode 9. Okay, two questions. Is this really BL? I mean, there's little to no romance. And those who watched till episode 15, don't spoil but is the ending indefinite like Addicted's? Cliff hanger-ish or did it end normally with answers?

There's a few episodes (up to ep 4) with eng subs for this which made me start watching it. I really liked it to the point I started watching the eps without subs, so luckily eventhough I'm not fluent, I could understand the Chinese. Haha. It's very light BL but overall it was cute ://))

Is this based on the novel with the same name or is it just a coincidence?

yes its the adaption from the novel.

Hm, thanks, read somewhere that it wasn't but the summary/plot was too alike for it not to be an adaption.

Oh My! It looks good but lets face it, somebody is gonna die. Chinese bl and happy endings are like me and stopping on my favorite drama... it never happens.

They have dramas that have happy endings as well.

Yop! But they are rare XD Its like in America, in the 50s, there was an explosion of lesbien romance novels, but still, because homosexuality was considered bad, all of them had tragic endings. Basically, sure, we'll give you some of what you want, we'll make some cash out of it but we wont go pass the limits we're set to have.

Well I have noticed, they're actually doing ones that have a positive ending on it. Regardless of the ending, i still do watch them as long as the plot is great and the character development is evident.

Chinese BL? Going to end tragedy - the Chinese BL ALWAYS, ALWAYS does.

Oh yeah with OTHER countries, but rarely China's. The country makes a lot of BL but it ALWAYS ends sadly - case in point, the happy ending for 'Uncontrolled Love' was ONLY released on the uncut dvd AFTER a LOT of wrangling. The happy ending to 'A Round Trip to Love' was NEVER filmed and when it was heading towards a happy ending the BL webdrama 'Addicted' was banned and the two main actors blacklisted for months.

Well, there's still quite a few chinese bl with happy endings :) A movie just released called Fanatic love had a lovely ending with both being alive & staying together, also The raccoon, Gogo G-boys, pair of love, Mr.X & I season 1 & 2 and ghost boyfriend. But yeah, I do agree with you about the endings with a lot of chinese bl movies/dramas. But it seems like that is about to change :)

Certainly the ones you mentioned had okay endings compared to the others, but we can only hope that China overcomes its rampant homophobia and starts allowing its entertainment industry to portray the LGBT community in a more positive light and with happy endings AND accepting families. :)

I don't know about China being homophobic in general but their government and SARFT certainly are. There are many Chinese people who complain about censorship of television shows, being angry or disappointed that SARFT cuts away scenes or forbids certain themes to be shown. It's really disheartening and also discourages more creativity in the entertainment industry.

@melontea - I completely agree with you. I also think that, as shown with Russia, if the government gives tacit or even open agreement to homophobia then the people will follow suit. Obviously not everyone, but there are always those just looking for an excuse to hate another person. I just find it so soul destroying to watch BL drama after BL drama from China all end the same way - with tragedy and despair for the gay couple. I do genuinely feel that the Chinese government and SARFT are still in the Dark Ages and don't understand that being gay, lesbian, bi or trans is NOT a 'lifestyle choice' (as SARFT have called it) and is actually just WHO the person is. Oh and I'm a straight woman; but I have gay family members so I see both sides of the argument - I just believe that a human being should be allowed to love even if that love is the same gender as them.
