17-year-old Yatabe Mineko grew up in a family of seven in a mountain village in northeastern Ibaraki Prefecture. Tokyo seemed like a different world even though it is in Kanto because of the poor access to transportation. Her father Minoru has gone to Tokyo to work in order to earn money for her elder brother’s university tuition fees. Once Mineko graduates from high school, she wants to help out in the farm read morework and give her grandfather Shigeru and mother Miyoko an easier life. However, her life completely changes when her father does not come back for the New Year. Mineko asks her family to let her go to Tokyo to find him and promises to send money home. In the autumn of 1964, she and two childhood friends Tokiko and Mitsuo are hired to start working at a small factory in Tokyo’s working class neighborhood. The wages are low and the working hours are long. After work each day, Mineko searches for her father and gets disheartened at times. Then companies go bankrupt due to the recession after the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the factory is shut down. Mineko has nowhere to go, but thankfully gets a job helping out at a Western restaurant that her father had declared “delicious” in one of his stories about Tokyo. Everyone at the restaurant including the female proprietress and her son who is the chef works her hard, but are soft-hearted and start to become like family. Mineko overcomes challenges and starts to lay down roots in Tokyo as she experiences many meetings and farewells amid the laughter and tears with regulars, people of the shopping street, friends, and colleagues. Will she be able to find her father?

I love the retro sound of the main theme song!! It really fits the time period so well and the little animation sequence that goes along with it is really cool!

I can see you're keeping up with the series as well! XD It's just so well written and cute I can't even. Are you regretting starting it while it's still airing? Because I sure am. Especially now, lol.

Yes! Still keeping up! This is the first “currently airing” asadora I've watched and yeah it’s been an interesting experience. I find because there’s so much time between episodes everything has felt so slow, like plot and character development are going at a snail’s pace sometimes. But I am enjoying it and I like trying to guess how it will end!

Ah, I guess I was luckier than you then, it just slowed down for me last week, before then I binge watched it. xD That way it isn't slow at all, lol! It felt like a normal drama, but with more clicking for the next episode involved, haha.

I really like Sawamura Ikki, but he's only got a supporting role AND it's 156 episodes. I doubt I'd stick it to the end, especially as subs tend to peter out too. But I probably start it anyway and then come back at the end - I mean it IS Sawamura Ikki. :)

I haven't watched it yet as I have so many dramas on the go at the moment, my daughter (19) is job hunting and needs rides to interviews and my husband is on holiday but also facing an op, plus it's my birthday (I'll be 52) next weekend - I just can't fit another drama in. But good to hear it's cute so I will add it to the 'to watch list' despite there not being a lot of Sawamura Ikki in it. Thanks for all the info.

Most of the recent asadoras have been subbed, so hopefully this one will be too. ^^

The asadoras just seem long because of the episode count, but in fact they're like a normal 39 episode x 1hr drama ... it's even shorter than the Korean weekend family dramas or the Chinese series...
