About 500 years ago during the time of Chosun Dynasty, Korea boasted a rigidly hierarchical and male dominated social structure. Based on a true story about a legendary girl, Jang Geum, who became the first woman to be the supreme royal physician of her times. Despite her poor condition as a low class girl in the male dominated society, Jang Geum overcame a series of social discrimination and landed herself as a read moreroyal cook, later becoming the royal physician, then ultimately the physician in charge of the king. She was even given by the king the title "The Great Jang Geum." The story of her checkered life on her success and breakdown as well as her love story beautifully unfold.

Not too many dramas I've watched over 50 episode; hell, over 30 episodes. But, watching this one was simply a privilege! It had been on my watch queue for a very long time and once in a awhile I get into these must watch historical drama moods! Lo and behold, 5 days later, I completed this drama and now I am simply in love with Ji Jin Hee!! This was my first read more drama watching him as well as Lee Yeong-Ae who seems to be quite famous in her time. The love story between their characters; Sir Min and Jang Geum is simply one of the most romantic stories I've ever seen! The chemistry, the portrayal of these characters by the actors was simply amazing!! Amazing! Amazing!! I loved the story, it helped peak my interesting in learning more about the art of food and healing. It truly was a well told story with beautiful cinematography! This is a 2003 drama so if you are new to dramas, it will seem very different than the more modern ones; however, after watching this tremendous jewel, I now know what the ratings during its broadcast times was well into the 50% range! Excellent! Excellent! Stupendous! I will never forget this love story ever!

The very first sageuk drama I have ever experienced. I can’t believe I was able to finish all those episodes along with my PARENTS. Yes. I hooked my parents into the Kdrama world with this show. If my parents loved this, then I’m betting you would too.

Jang Geum is not an ordinary drama because it was actually based in real life. In history, she is known to be a palace cook read more turned into royal physician but of course, like all history books made drama, producers has their ways in tweaking with the story line so a lot may have been changed. Setting that thought aside, I have enjoyed all 60 episodes of Jang Geum because in every episode, there are always different conflicts. In which will be solved on the next episode or the next. It keeps me on my toes and I just couldn’t help but get addicted to it. I like the thought that Jang Geum had great mentors so she could become the person whom the king trusted her to be. Then she also had different support systems: mainly King Jungjong, Capt. Min Jung Ho (the love interest), Yeon Saeng (her best friend), Lady Han Baek Young (her mentor) having this people around her she was able to survive the harsh world within the palace. Set things straight and become the Dae (meaning great) Jang Geum that she is known up to this date.

Oh and yeah, not to forget the romantic moments between Jang Geum and Jung Ho. Watching them in all those lovey-dovey moments was worth every tears I’ve shed for this drama.

Same director and male lead, and an interesting female lead. All of the historical beauty in Jewel in the Palace you can find in Dong Yi.

This is truly the greatest drama on earth it would have been wonderful if they had 6 seasons like Game Of Thrones because as a HUGE! GOT Fan Nirvana and Fire Out Wits Out Smarts and all around Out Class Game Of Thrones in every way. Nirvana in Fire is up to par or I may even say far more superior than many high rated American Shows. I was stunned by the Brilliance of NiF in every way plots, screen writing, soundtrack, acting, cinematography etc the directors are extremely talented I would watch anything created by this Magnificent team.

How can anyone sit through this? I went up to episode 6 and there is nooo way I'm going any further it's so trash lol. Every episode she's getting bullied over and over again so repetitive that it kills me, the only difference is how the bullying gets worse each episode so stupid. It's not fun or interesting to watch 6 episodes in and still have never seen the shadow of the main guy, she does one thing right then someone else takes the credit and then she takes all the blame for someone else's mistakes it's like really? Also why does everyone hate her smh the old lady's do for no reason the little girls do for no reason it's just tiresome to watch and boring wouldn't recommend this to anyone idk how people could actually enjoy watching someone get bullied for 6 episodes straight and not one good/interesting thing happen.

Honestly, this drama annoyed me in so many places not because it was bad but it was inevitable because people are just cruel, greedy, irrational, untrustworthy, Reckless, complex beings. I kept complaining and I was like why am I putting myself through this. But the story, the cast, the plot was really well developed and put together. It's pretty slow, but honestly you can't rush greatness. Also this is the best love i'm not going to call it romance, but beautiful love i have ever watched in Korea dramas. It was just so deep, and this has the most loyal friendships btw two girls I've watched. Have to rewatch it again this really has some good life lessons and decision making skills. While watching it my ratings bounced from a 7 to a 7.5 to a 7 to a 8 and like straight to a 9.

I just finished it and now I know why this drama was part of the korean wave. It was perfectly made. I never got bored throughout the 54 episodes. I have to say that this is the best historical drama I've ever watched. I had to force myself to finish the last 2 episodes of Queen Seon Deok, stopped around episode 40 for Six Flying Dragons, and got tired of Dong Yi after 25 episodes. This is the only 50+ eps historical drama that I was able to finish with no problems :). You guys have to watch it!

How's the romance in this one? A strong point of the plot, a sideplot, or none at all? One suitor, two suitors, harem? xD

A Sideplot. It developed veryyyy slowly lol. However I really liked the romance between the two. It's mostly about their romance from around episode 49-54. They are so cute together ㅠㅡㅠ.

I've never watched it but the theme song is so iconic that I remember my childhood when played...

This is one of those things every East Asian has pretty much watched (or heard if you were too young, like me)
