Story: The love triangle in this story will make you cry, sigh and smile. There is no evil man here. Both men are equally deserving of her. It is a story of sacrifices, of hardships, of courage and virtue. At first, I was doubtful about a romance drama being set in the Southern-Northern Dynasties period, knowing from history, that it was a bloody era to live in. Dynasties come and go. There read more was no stability in that period of chinese history. Furthermore, prince Lan Ling comes from a royal family that was slaughtered to extinction. Prince Lan Ling himself died at a young age (around 30s). So, how can there be a love story centred around this setting? Well... there is! And this drama told a wonderful love story involving Prince Lan Ling, Yang Xue Wu and King Yuwen Yong. I like that the writer stuck to the historical events to the end. There was never a boring moment, despite the length of the drama (46 episodes). Each episode ends with a cliffhanger that makes you want for more. Before you realise it, 46 episodes have come and gone! Highly addictive! My only warning before you start? You will need tissue - bucket loads of it! Truly a touching love story.

Acting/Cast: No complains on acting. Everyone did exceptionally well. Everyone's veteran actors and actresses; so they know what they are on about. The chemistry between the 3 leads in the love triangle was very good and believable. The only issue I noticed was a wardrobe malfunction with King Yuwen Yong... where you can see his 'fake hairline' in one of the later episode (forgot which one). They probably hurried the production of that episode. Other than that, all's fine and dandy!

Music: Beautiful songs that reflects the mood of the story. You will love the hauntingly sad vocals of Della Ding and Jia Jia. Each of the 3 leads have a song for them that pretty much sums up their love for each other.

Rewatch value: Time permits; I'll defintely re-watch this gem. In fact, I am out and about trying to get hold of the whole series in DVD.

Overall: I gave this drama a 10/10 simply because I can't give it 9.5/10 here. It is not really an 8/10 either. I made this decision by comparing this drama against Bu Bu Jing Xing (the perfect 10 ancient chinese romance drama for me) and against BBJX, this drama is around 80-90% at the level of BBJX. To me, BBJX is still No. 1 and this one here is a close No. 2. I hope this gives you an idea where this drama sits in terms of ranking. Lastly, just sit back and enjoy!

In the last couple of months these Chinese dramas really are my cup of tea, I find them to be so appealing and interesting especially their historical ones. Also I love their approach to romance, in all these historical dramas couples are so natural, realistic with real kisses and hot scenes, spontaneous hugging, touching, biting, kisses all over the place and it looks so great. It's not that I find that the read more most important but when you have those moments between couples I want to see them as more realistic as possible. :P

Anyway apart from that I always loved Chinese historical movies the most so it's logical that I enjoy in Chinese dramas too. Lan Ling was easily one of the best historical dramas I've seen and I could gladly give even the higher score but those episodes from 20 to 26 or 27 I think, were too draggy and unnecessary with many illogical turn of events and I found the reactions some of the characters too unbelievable. Except for that everything else was FANTASTIC. LITERALLY. I think that the acting was outstanding and that even the side characters were brilliant and shined in some moments more than the leads.

Ariel as Xue Wu was perfect, she became my fav. female from historical dramas, so witty, smart, caring, funny, cool, brave and strong full of love to give to her man and all her friends, it's so rare to see a woman like her. I loved how she was such a support to Lan Ling and a true wise woman who deserved to be treated as a Queen, without her Lan Ling wouldn't succeed in anything, she was so psychically strong and in some scenes I loved how she showed balls like a real man. :P
William as Lan Ling- beautiful, wonderful, so freaking hot and grandiose man, a true leader who loved his people more than anything, who was willing to sacrifice himself in order to save the woman he loved and to save his soldiers and his country, I enjoyed in watching his brotherly love with Fifth Prince and how they shared their deepest thoughts together. And when he was a masked warrior oh well I was so in love with him, that role was even more suited for him. ;)
Yu Wen Yong-the way Chan Daniel has portrayed him was just magnificent, his expressions, gestures, his ability to be such a great Emperor and grand man, how he fell in love with Xue Wu and loved her until his last breath and who fought for her but to the point when it was possible, how he respected her, I enjoyed so much in their scenes together, I think they had incredible chemistry, they should make some other drama as a couple for real. ;) He broke my heart several times, I really fell hard for him and once more I had that second lead syndrome.

Amongst them all, there was one character I literally loved the most, it was Wei Qian Xiang as Xiao Dong, that guy was freaking brilliant and I have to say that without him, his helping and solving some things, nothing would be possible, he was of the crucial help for Xue Wu, Lan Ling and Yu Wen Yong. So spontaneous, free spirited, in love with life, a rebel who was by each step side by side with her, who supported and believed in her no matter what, who was also the most intelligent one- he saw before everyone else threats, who was evil and who's not, reminded me so much of Moon Jae Shin in SS which was fantastic. Above that he had so great chemistry with Ariel, both of them were such a splendid sight for the eyes, their scenes were the most funny and interesting ones. ;)

This drama also has such a great villains, the most hateful ones. I really found in Lan Ling the character I hate the most but really hate, she climbed up to my number one and most definitely she well deserves that place. Zheng Er- you who have seen this drama know why I'm saying this, you who haven't- go and watch. I've never seen some woman to be this evil to the core, to the tiniest bone in her body, twisted, nasty, terrible, disgusting, obsessively jealous, her smile is the most creepy one, I have goosebumps every time I think of her. The actress deserves and award for such a brilliant performance.

Music was beautiful and so wonderful, I like all the ballads, especially from Della "Shou Zhang Xin", it brought tears to my eyes.

I liked fighting scenes, cinematography was great, costumes astonishing, sceneries breathtaking, and the chemistry between the leads one of the best I've seen if not the very best one. They became one of my fav. couples in the whole world, their chemistry was too great, moments they shared were priceless, kisses, conversations, hugs, teasing, even fights were great, intimacy- one of the best I've seen, mindblowing for sure.

Every vivid fan of historical dramas should see Lan Ling, every fan of the actors in it should see Lan Ling, every fan of intelligent script should see Lan Ling and every fan of real passionate love and intimacy should see Lan Ling.
The bottom line is- Lan Ling is a great drama with its own flaws, holes and boring moments like almost every drama but hell it was worth watching every moment of it. And it has the most perfect ending. At least I found it to be so appropriate and logically wonderful.

They're quite similar. Prophecies and good looking princes, fighting for the throne, strong headed characters, annoying second lead women, misunderstood and in need of petting males, etc.

Although from my point of view Prince of Lan Ling is much better and truly awkward singing scenes either..

gao wei who is suppose to be the cousin of lanling and the antagonist in prince of lan ling is the adopted son of lu zhen in legend of lu zhen. i would say this is a prequel to prince of lanling. it's a great drama, so underrated! watch it and you will fall in love with the lead male, BUT don't read wiki, never

This drama is etched into my heart and will always hold a very special place. Main reason being the King of Zhou, quite possibly the BEST second lead in drama history ever. He was so well written, and so well developed, that I never stopped rooting for him til the end. Daniel Chan is the best actor here too

This drama is overrated <.< I was disgusted by the blatant fanservice in the first episode (SERIOUSLY NUDE BATHING SCENE??). Not to mention the main female character is naive and very unlikeable for me. I came in expecting an action/battle drama but got a corny romantic melodrama.

You do realise... that all film is basically fanservice? That's why there's such a large market built around it: of course the directors and screen writers are making the drama for themselves, but they only have the opportunity to do so because of viewers, so it makes sense that they'd try to please their broader audience.

Anyone can tell me which drama to watch after Prince of Lan Ling? I liked PLL because of the numerous and chem-tastic scenes between Lan Ling and Xu Wu. I need another historical Chinese drama that is just as romantic.

Hm...Then how about "Faith?" or Six Flying Dragons? It's just recently started to air xP and I love every second of it. It has romance too :3 maybe not focused on romance, but it's a very good drama ^^

Historical Chinese drama? Let's see here...

Bu Bu Jing Xin (Scarlet Heart) will be everything you are looking for. Warning: it is an emotional roller coaster.

Scarlet Heart is about a young girl from the modern times who accidentally travels back in time to the Qing dynasty as the daughter of a noble Manchurian family. Her sister is married to the 8th prince of the ruling imperial family. She finds herself somehow entangled in the course of history, falling in love with the princes and inadvertently involved in the historically infamous "9 Princes Succession Battle" which was one of the most ruthless and vicious political plots in Chinese history, a struggle among Emperor Kangxi's sons in the fight for throne ascension. As a girl from the modern times, she is aware of how history eventually will be played out and since she cannot travel back to her time, she decides to stay but she is careful about every move she makes so not to alter history.

The historical and political elements of the drama are all true, strategically tied into the fictional love story and the character of Ma'ertai Ruoxi (the modern girl). It is based on the hit novel with the same time. It was a hit series with popularity even outside of China. The Koreans bought the rights and production is currently underway to remake this, their version called "Moon Lovers". When even Koreans are interested in remaking your dramas, you know you've done something right XD

gah! I don't think I've ever wanted to rip someones smug face off as much as I do Zheng Er's. someone seriously needs to set that lady on fire and send her back to her domain in hell's fiery furnace

Excellent drama! I've never seen such great and colourful costumes and cinematography so far, this C-drama is definitely number one when it comes to that. Oh how much I love Ariel, she was one of the best female characters in dramaland (nothing can replace Se Ryung in TPM though), but I can say that she's right after her. Clever, unique and beautiful. Chemistry was right up to my taste, intimate, sizzling and passionate. So many funny and interesting side characters my favourite is Xiao Dong-his loyalty and friendship with Xue Wu was sweet and powerful. Overall, I definitely, definitely recommend this drama to every fan of historical dramas! ;)

uhmm.. am i the only one here who just can't get into this drama? I've tried to watch it 3 times and can't get pass the first few episodes. I mean the 1 & 2 episode is so cringe worthy but i still tried to hold it in, at least the main leads are still easy on the eyes & the movie itself is visually good. first of all, there's just no logic in this drama and everything seems so elementary from the dialogues & the plot line that sometimes gets too ridiculous. Ok fine perhaps I should not overthink while watching this & i should cast the little intelligence i have aside. Secondly, we have another young, naive, & annoying female lead *sigh* & of course we have another heroic almighty prince charmingT.T ok fine, perhaps its for "character development" & despite my cynical comment I actually love romance-filled dramas. but the romance is just typical & bland so far. am i the only crazy one here who can't seem to see how "amazing" this drama is? or perhaps is it gonna get better? Another thing is that I just can't believe that people compared this to be nearly as good as bbjx. like what????!!! ok I'm going to try to continue watching because i'm not giving up now & hopefully i'll find something that will push me to keep on watching. #sorryforthehate

your opinion is definitely respected, everybody has different tastes in dramas ^^ i'll admit there are a lot of popular dramas i could not see the allure in

personally, i loved the plotline of the first 15 episodes. while yes, there were a lot of cliches utilized, i think they were used cleverly to make the watchers care for the characters. oh! and it definitely gets better after the first two episode :D
the female lead is yes naive, but that's what later makes her so charming, she's so pure and wants to see the light in everybody (this ends up changing the lives of many other characters)
its funny because i've tried to get into bbjx so many times but i can't XD you should teach me haha

It sounds like whoever told you this drama is amazing overhyped it for you xD Personally I don't find this drama much good at all, the whole prophecy and destined to be together thing was too cliche. I didn't find the chemistry between the main leads all that good either, and i pretty much gave up on liking this drama sometimes around episode 2 during the bathing scene which was too full of fanservice Lol.
