Every actor hopes his first project after mandatory service will be a hit. Jung Kyung Ho luckily can set his hopes to rest; they've been realized. Cruel City will likely stand as the best drama of 2013. Even if better appears in the coming months, nothing can take away its status as top-notch noir.

Writing for this series remained consistent and strong throughout, even maintaining good pace. Characters rarely failed to behave read more in an intelligent manner. The much-lauded, flooring twists are just as crazy as you've heard (and better yet, even supported by prior evidence in the story). What is most impressive to me though, is that the script remains faithful to itself and the spirit of the genre. We are shown a seedy, pessimistic world which is…well, cruel. Potential viewer expectation aside, this kind of darkness is what we were promised from the first and delivered at the last.

Nearly every lead was dynamic, from Shi Hyun and Hyung Min to Jin Sook and Safari. Even the hardcore villains had strokes of complexity which made most more than mustache-twirling monsters. These grounding factors may not cease our hatred of them, but at least add some level of understanding. Yoon Soo Min likely is the weakest link of the main cast, her arc included; she needed a bit more weight to contend on equal footing with the other plot lines. The completion of her journey manages to be satisfying nonetheless.

Jung Kyung Ho shines brilliantly as both star and main draw of Cruel City. Decadent charisma pours from him in droves, lending his Doctor’s Son an impossibly fierce magnetism. The most compelling action sequences belonged to Kyung Ho also; I quickly fell in love with his sharp knife skills and cat-like elegance. It's important to note he filmed the final episodes with a nasty back injury; his epic performance is not only a product of talent, but dedication and hard work. This drama was also very kind to Lee Jae Yoon, whose slowly developing Hyung Min I gradually gained affection for. He portrays the team leader as smart, sympathetic, and steady -- with a shot of menace to prevent him being a boring goody-two-shoes. Honorable mentions go to Kim Yoo Mi and Yoon Hyun Min; their respective characters Jin Sook and Hyun Soo are over the top cool and attractive. To say I became deeply invested in the fate of both of them is an understatement.

“Love is dead,” according to one of Cruel City’s most recognizable themes: Kim Young Jin’s “Wound.” My love for the music will never die, though. It is stirring and atmospheric, always well-utilized in show. Even instrumental tracks are memorable, though the rare vocal was always delicious. Many fans here at MDL went crazy trying to find out their artists and song titles before the soundtrack was released.

I'm almost speechless when it comes to this drama, that is how good it actually is. Usually i'm a fan of the romantic/comedy type but for some reason I watched this and oh WOW! It is just pure amazing.

This show made me jump, scream, laugh and cry, my husband asked me if have turned nuts;). One second your thinking Is he a gangster? other your thinking OMG no he can't be, read more he must be undercover, then ooh no he is sooo bad and next OMG HE IS. It's not limited to the main leads but also to all of the supporting casts, they seemed all to be so very good planned out.

Chemistry between all of them was really nice, the bro-chemistry, the family-chemistry and the love-chemistry. No sloppy violence.
I'm sure i'm not alone thinking that its nice when a show ends in a realistic manner or unexpected. But some shows, you just wish they could end the way you want it, somehow Kdramas and especially this use the ending to make you keep thinking about the show over and over again after its done. I LOVE IT.. can't stop thinking about an alternative ending in my head.

Im out of praises, watch it and you will love, it.

Both are crime series & though the story might not related at all, it gives you the same feels: goosebumps & keeps you sit on the edge of your seat since it's full of suspense & unpredictable twist and turn. You won't regret watching this, it truly is a masterpiece.

Romance is important part of plot, but doesn't cover the rest, which is dark, mysterious, more 'for adults' I would say.

She was kinda weak... sure, you're rooting for her, but character wise, there are people much more interesting than her. You're just not as interested. Still, they dont force her on screen constantly. The romance is a bit forced though, the drama didnt have time for it, there was too much going on. Oh, sorry, to respond to your question, yes she is strong. However, I feel she's still one of the weakest one.

Thank you!!If the focus is not romance then I'm glad because I don't think this drama needs that.

Oh no! Maybe the intention was to make a Romeo and Juliet type of love story, but meeeh, it wasnt the main focus. Have fun with the drama! The first episode is a strong one :) Write me when you'll finish it or if you decide to abandon it XD

With all the reviews, I think that this drama has really a potential. I wanted to keep going but I gave up after episode 1 because I cannot handle the amount of gore that it almost made me vomit. Maybe I'll try watching this again once I grow older ^^

Oh yes you totally should! You don't get to see many kdrama like this outthere, I believe it will blow your mind, especially if you're into dark, mature type kdrama filled with action & plot twists. I wish they'd create more kdrama like this, though sadly I don't think they do.
Imo namgyuri is doin' just fine & you don't need to worry if her acting will bother you since there're many admireable character in this drama with a top notch acting that will be enough to get you glued on your seat ;p

This is certainly not a drama for everyone, despite the great rating and the positive reviews. And it's not just because it's an action drama, though that's also an important point of choosing whether to watch this. I am someone who can mostly watch any kind of drama, especially the dark ones, besides if there is romance in it, that's a huge bonus (most of the time). For this... I have to be honest, I was incredibly bored with this at first. It really takes its time to get you to warm up to it.

This *is* a drama for you if you like a complicated story line with very complex characters. You also need to give your full attention to it, otherwise there are just going to be holes in your interpretation of the plot. XD Also, this is a great drama if you want one with badass female characters! :D

I don't think I would easily recommend this to everyone, but this drama had it's strong points like acting, complicated character relationships, plot twists, great action and great characters, so if that's what you like in this drama, you will probably like this quite a lot!

i'm really surprised with myself because i never tried to watch a drama that doesn't has "romance" as main genre , this is my first and my FAV right now! , everything is MASTERPIECE , the characters, acting , story, osts and OMO THE PLOT TWISTS THAT KEEPS U WANTING MOOOOOOORE<3 GOSH!! i cant describe how i feel right now that i finished the drama! i feel so empty and I WAAANTT MORE!! i cant get over my love for doctor's son,,SARANGHEOOO PAKSA ADUL OPPA!!! but tbh the writer shouldn't have done what he/she did in the last episode but overall everything is worth watching!
P.S:i finished this drama in a day and half.

i'm like you with the romance genre, so i think i'll give this a try . I can also relate to your binge watching because i do it all the time. wyb I watched a fifty episode drama in three days (most eps i watched 1.5 or 2.0 speed and I'm beginning to read the subs real fast). Your last sentence frightens me a little because i hate to watch sad ending drama or where the boy doesn't end up with the girl. But I'm going for it and will update when the show is done.
