Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by titans. Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of titans. Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a titan in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a colossal titan that appears out of thin air. As the smaller titans flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Eren vows that he will murder every single titan and take revenge for all of mankind. I watched this being familiar with the manga and anime but hardly a die hard fan so the story changes didn't bother me. The basic story-line stayed the same in the movie- humans trapped inside walls, titans attack, humans try and fight back- but deviated and shrank the story down to basically action scenes. Other than a brief intro period the movie consists of fighting, dying and gore. That to me is the movie's weakness. The emphasis on action combined with a shorter running time really hurt character development. Without building the connection between Eren, Armin, and Mikasa, there was little to root for and left me feeling disconnected from them because the plot didn't build the personal relationship well.
No complaints about the acting really. All the actors did well at portraying fear and desperation throughout the movie. My shallow side also appreciated how good both Miura Haruma and the Levi stand in Hasegawa Hiroki looked in the film.
The background music drove me crazy! It was to loud in quiet scenes and never seemed to fit with the action on screen. Very distracting overall and detracted from my enjoyment of the movie. This might be partially because of the source but still very annoying.
I might rewatch in the future but only because the source I used was very grainy so I wouldn't mind a better quality source. If you are looking for a faithful adaptation of Attack on Titan don't bother. If you want to see a fast paced kind of gory action movie this might be for you.

I haven´t seen anime, but knew cca what it is about and because everyone in Japan is kind of crazy about it, I decided to give it a try. I expected that if the movie is well done, I won´t have any issues comparing it with original story line (like my friend who watched the anime did) and I will be able to enjoy it. BUT!
To sum up: A lot of "action" scenes, no story line and I got a feeling that a movie director must be a BIG fan of Quentin Tarantino. I don´t recommend eating anything before watching and during the movie I advise you just switch off your brain, otherwise you will just get a 2-hours-lasting headache from all the wtf moments in the movie (and trust me, there are many of them...like many many). Even people who can´t speak a word japanese wouldn´t have a problem understanding it. Actually you don´t even need the sound (OST doesn´t match the scenes very well), just watching is enough. I recognize 3 main actors from other dramas (Miura being one of my favourite actors), so I thought than even if the storyline won´t be that much interesting, they are going to contribute with their acting skills, but unfortunately their performance just made the movie worse (and that´s mostly script writer´s fault).
HOWEVER, if you think of it as a comedy-parody, you can laugh a lot during the movie (like me and my friend did) :D

P.S. Many of my friends who know original anime + manga and watched the movie, complained about one important character, who was completely left out of the movie. And after coming back from the cinema, I googled a bit and found that Mikasa is supposed to be the last Asian on the Earth, but actually in the movie you don´t get to see any other race besides Japanese.

Also, please be aware that my rating for story doesn´t have anything to do with original manga/anime story.
