Good Doctor

Episode 16

In a nightmarish turn, Shi On witnesses his mentor being stabbed. Do Han grasps at the point of contact, but ultimately crumbles once the attacker removes his blade.

With Do Han out of commission, the attacker turns on Shi On next. Our hero turns fear into courage, delivering a blow which sends him reeling. Despite this commendable strike, Shi On soon finds the favor returned.

Luckily for our bromance, McStabby here finds escape more compelling than further doctor carving. Shi On chooses to attend Do Han and his wounds instead of chasing down the criminal.

Just when it appears the attacker may just run free, Nurse Jo confronts him. That deliciously masculine theme from The Man From Nowhere accompanies the cinematic exchange. The villain charges forward and Nurse Jo follows suit. Whether this is the right time for a movie parody is beyond me, but hey.

The residents rush their professor to care, fussing over him. Yoon Seo arrives on the scene where, in true Do Han fashion, he asks everyone to stop overreacting. Shi On divulges that no internal damage was done, so they may as well.

Our heroine angrily demands the reason for his recklessness, but Do Han proudly looks to Shi On. He was much more reckless, but this time he only has praise for such bravado. "Good job, Park Shi On."

After a pregnant pause, our heroine asks after the culprit next. Everyone looks toward the other side of the room. He lies unconcious on a bed opposite (though I wonder whether they would really keep him with the victims like this), bleeding and bruised.

Elsewhere, attended by an officer, Nurse Jo nurses bloody knuckles -- his own trophy from the ordeal. Nurse Nam arrives from home, worried after the situation. She begs information and learns that her Senior must be taken to the station for questioning. Shouldering weak attempts to shake her off, Nurse Nam insists she be allowed to come along.

Yoon Seo attempts to settle Shi On and his still trembling nerves. He explains how this was the first time he'd ever needed to hit anyone. When our hero had seen performers decimate bad guys on film, it felt great. But actually doing it himself? Not so much.

Our heroine believes sometimes violence is necessary, especially in instances such as this. "But you should never use violence in an intentional or unjustifiable way. What you did tonight was justified."

She gives his shoulder a good slugging and poses a scenario. What if she were surrounded by gangsters and Shi On was her only hope? What would he do? With monumental focus, our hero demonstrates as asked -- and starts quoting The Man From Nowhere.

Chae Kyung bursts into the hospital room where her (ex?) fiancee is recovering. After some back and forth, she takes his hand  and shares a secret prayer that God might allow "the one" to stay by her side in lieu of parents. Do Han smiles and promises to be more careful, to tell Chae Kyung should anything like this ever arise again. They share some gentle skinship -- just in time for Yoon Seo to witness the reconciliation from outside.

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/5_zps37c761a3.jpg

But as though nothing had passed between them in previous episodes, Yoon Seo merely smiles. (Gotta get the main couple rolling sooner or later, right?)

Once things are settled, Shi On visits Young Seo to assure her McStabby will be firmly punished. But more than his gentle words, she wonders after Do Han.  The professor reminded her of her brave father. Our hero smiles gently at Young Seo, who returns the gesture.

Nurses Nam and Jo exit the police station. Because he used excessive force (which is true, though McStabby deserved it), Jo may ultimately face charges of his own. This elicits an irate response from Nam, but her jovial Senior uses the situation to win a dinner date with his crush.

Over the well-earned meal, Nam wonders aloud where he learned to fight so well. Jo offers vague explanations and, after an exchange about the meaning of his name, they resume the usual flirtation pattern.

The next day, in front of many of their colleagues, Shi On pecks Nurse Jo right on the cheek. Everyone seems amused and surprised and our hero explains it was congratulatory and thankful. In any case, this was the same way Nurse Jo offered such sentiment to him previously. "I thought you liked this sort of expression."

Some bandying follows, and Nurse Nam notices the "troublesome vice director" pass on the walkway above.

Doctor Ko makes his first appearance in the episode, meeting with Chief Kim. It becomes clear his heart has changed; he shows total distaste for the looming takeover. A surgeon should not worry about sides, he says, but surgery. Even Chief Kim seems a little surprised by his sudden shift.

The residents finally display awareness of the situation surrounding them. As a group, they weigh pros and cons of the possible change. Because the new hospital structure would place focus around their department, things are not all bad. Shi On despises the idea, but ultimately the decision rests in the hands of others.

Do Han chooses this moment to stagger in, unwilling to allow something as trivial as being stabbed to affect his work. Despite the understandable worry his charges express, he insists things are fine. Surgery is out of the question, sure, but he can at least see patients.

A little knifing can't keep this doc down, yo.

Yoon Seo follows Do Han into his office, curious about the takeover. She displays loyalty toward him and Director Choi, certain that should the two of them leave, then so would she. The professor merely encourages her to wait to cross that bridge and care for the junior residents.

Troublesome Vice Director Kang reads over an email from Boston Children's Hospital. The physician recommends that the procedure be discussed with Cha Yoon Seo, since her insight may have pinpointed the best alternative. Basically, they would prefer she deal with any risk involved. (Did anyone else notice the voice over was male and the sender was female? Good English, anyway.)

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/8_zpse1820112.jpg

Speak of the devil. Yoon Seo links up with Shi On in order to discuss the very same case. Despite the consultation with Boston, she does not have a complete grasp on the treatment proposed. Together with our hero, Yoon Seo attempts to clarify any shady points. She first sends him on a run to Tae Hang Hospital for records.

Chae Kyung bumps into Shi On as he is leaving. Their friendly conversation turns to the weather; we learn that our hero has no jacket. Her concern leads her to buy him an incredibly expensive sweater. (We're making up for Do Han randomly buying Yoon Seo fancy clothes right? Buying outfits for people must be a thing for this couple.)

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/9_zpsd321d2f2.jpg

Back at Sung Won, Vice Director Kang calls our heroine into his office. He reveals the VP Shunt patient is his son, and that Boston turned down the procedure because of the major risk. "Doesn't high risk mean the same as 'impossible?'"

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/10_zpse4da820e.jpg

Yoon Seo disagrees, feeling that he underestimates their capabilities. Something about his bearing sets her off, and she eventually storms out.

Another office consultation, this time with Do Han. Our heroine has filled him in on the sordid details. It appears the American hospital might have turned down the case because the patient is foreign; think of the international scandal should something go wrong!

Ultimately, Yoon Seo believes the situation is less dire than everyone makes it out to be. But the professor wonders whether a hidden variable exists they may have overlooked. In any case, it looks like Sung Won might be the only facility willing to help.

Freshly woolen, Shi On returns from his errand. Yoon Seo notes the new garment with interest, which quickly evolves into unprecedented jealousy. She takes him aside for scolding, first for accepting such an expensive thing -- then for asking another noona for clothing.

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/11_zps3456924d.jpg

Though our hero agrees it was wrong to accept such a pricy gift, he stands confused. Why should this anger Yoon Seo? Flustered by the situation, our heroine seeks excuses and comes up short. She shoves the price tag into his hand and stomps off alone.

Do Han continues to see patients as promised. He runs through diagnostics with an obvious plot point -- erm, parent. This man brought his child from far away in order to cure his tumor.

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/12_zpsf990278c.jpg

Meanwhile and elsewhere, Evil Dad listens to the news while eating. With some surprise, he learns his son helped to subjugate McStabby the previous night.

Doctor Ko meets with Woo Il Kyu to learn more about Shi On. He learns all about Evil Dad, disgusted at what our hero dealt with. When Il Kyu wonders after his sudden interest, our dear Dr. Acula flutters around the subject. Is that professional jealousy I sense from the Resident Jerk?

Evil Dad eventually tracks down his son. He praises his punching skills, which surely came from somewhere. Justifiably insulted by the insinuation, Shi On paints the clear line between hitting a villain and brutalizing your own family. When the inevitable abusive blustering begins, Doctor Ko appears -- and steps in!

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/13_zps02328d23.jpg

"Excuse me."

He sends our hero on a fake errand, winking. Then, firmly and professionally, advises Evil Dad to leave Shi On alone at work. How about that?

Yoon Seo offers the weary Do Han some canned drink post-surgery. "I told you so," she says. He should have passed the procedure to someone else, since his wound obviously hurts.

"I deserve some pain," Do Han says. "I've been hurting someone and had no clue."

Based on these words and the scene she witnessed, our heroine rightly assumes he and Chae Kyung have patched things. Do Han smiles, and after a pause, offers gentle words. "You were always by my side when I needed you. Thank you."

Their connection taught him how to truly care for someone else. Am I the only viewer mourning the potential of this ship? In another drama, what a couple they might have been.

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/14_zpsf7bc8832.jpg

Oh, well. I'm here for the bromance anyway.

Chae Kyung confesses her involvement with the takeover plot to Director Choi and Chairwoman Lee. To their shock, everything about their current plight connects back to her somehow. Accusations begin flying as they always do with this trio.

Because Chae Kyung fully maturing rings too good to be true, she blames her stepmother again. She should have been told about Chairman Jung sooner! Who cares that which she coveted would have been hers with time and patience? Everyone sells out their family assets when they get angry and bitter. Right?

Chairwoman Lee has had enough, too. She orders the problem child out of her sight.

Director Choi joins Chae Kyung in the hallway. She promises to fix her wrongs, but is met with an apology. "We made you this way. It isn't your fault."

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/15_zps3edb1848.jpg

Yes it is.

Ultimately, he expresses the feeling that nothing of the hospital or foundation matters to him. Should Doctor Choi lose anything, Chae Kyung would be all he might mourn. As he walks away, her eyes well with tears.

Yoon Seo remains irrationally jealous. Bidding a cold goodnight to Shi On, she begins the trek home. Though on the way, she soon gets the impression someone is trailing behind.

And she's right! It's our hero, poorly casing her steps.

Yoon Seo starts laughing, and soon confronts him. "Are you a stalker? Why are you following me?"

Shi On sullenly admits he felt she was angry. Our heroine denies it repeatedly, until it becomes impossible. "So if I was mad, how would you make it up to me?"

Stopping at a park, Shi On illustrates his method. He knocks around innocent hobby horses, mimicking their jiggle and bounce. It seems to work, since Yoon Seo laughs.

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/16_zps3f241078.jpg

"Do you even know why I was angry?"

Having read that this question is most difficult to read among those posed by women, our hero prefers to be told.

After a moment, Yoon Seo has to admit she isn't exactly sure. Because all Shi On knows is that it was because of him, he apologizes. This exchange is interrupted by the time; our hero must return to the hospital ASAP. Before he prances off, Shi On does the wiggle one last time.

Do Han snatches up Chae Kyung for a date to the medical theme bar. She gets drunk and confesses that she feels like a fool. Comforting her and clarifying their rekindled relationship once and for all, he pulls his fiancee close.

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/17_zps01d4d1f2.jpg

Morning sees Vice Director Kang meet with Do Han and Yoon Seo. They discuss his son and the surgery; he asks that one of them fly to Boston to perform it. As this will be an impossibility, Do Han advises the child be brought to Sung Won.

We learn that, despite knowing the capability of the department, Kang merely distrusts them. Why? Who knows? But his role in the takeover stems from the desire to build a trustworthy facility from the ground.

Neither Do Han or Yoon Seo understand. What good comes from having the best of everything if nobody can be treated?

After a short-lived encounter with Mother at the cafeteria, Shi On visits Evil Dad. When he rolls over and shirks his only blanket, our hero gingerly covers him back up. The fear is still there and he flees right away.

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/18_zps52d7c1f2.jpg

Vice Director Kang reminisces on the consultation with Yoon Seo and Do Han. Without his complete trust, they feel uncomfortable working on the patient. They decided the matter is out of their hands.

He eventually bumps into Shi On, who declares him "bad." Our hero refuses to see the good "for-profit" may yield, reiterating what his colleagues said. What use is a hospital that can only help those wealthy few? With his piece said, Shi On bows and leaves the vice director to stew.

In Hye learns her donor will be In Young. This infuriates and pains our little cupid, who feels guilt at "forcing" her sister into such hardship. She bolts from the room in plain sight of Han Jin Wook and Shi On.

Our hero goes to In Hye, while Doctor Han comforts In Young. Apparently not even he knew who the donor would be.

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/19_zps35ba686d.jpg

Despite his best attempt to engage her, In Young rebukes him sharply. The scene ends with Han standing helplessly outside the door.

Yoon Seo rushes to Do Han, having learned In Hye's surgery date has been set. Because this was done without their knowledge, the professor moves to meet with Chief Kim. There he demands to be present for the procedure.

Chief Kim cites the pediatric department as a distraction and refuses. Besides, they have limited experience with intestinal work. Do Han responds that this is a different case, due to the necessity for transplant. His words have little effect, and the Chief sticks to his resolution. Things will be done without Do Han or any of those connected with him.

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/20_zps9e1499ad.jpg

Vice Director Kang learns his family has suddenly appeared at Sung Won. He meets with his wife, whom he chides for the surprise, and then his weakening child. When Do Han and Yoon Seo come round,  Kang impresses the fact that the surgery will not be done.

Do Han understands, but wonders why he would do this now. Their surgical talent has been proven, and Kang once expressed faith in him.

The reason? This is *his* child. "There is no father in the world who would entrust his son to an uncertain possibility."

How about that look from Do Han? It basically screams, "Are you serious?!" An uncertain chance is better than none at all.

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/21_zpsbccc2bca.jpg

Our heroine remains with the younger Kang, who seems to recognize her. After reading the email she had sent, the boy begged to come to Korea. He wanted nothing more than for Yoon Seo to perform his surgery.

Do Han fumes back at the office, completely irritated by this ridiculous situation. Shi On returns as well, catching things mid-way.

Breaking away from the professor, Yoon Seo and our hero share canned drinks. Neither understands why people choose to do as they please, rather than what is best. Shi On is convinced that people hurt each other more than anything, but they are also the cure.

Yoon Seo agrees, pointing out that Shi On stands as a part of this "cure." His love lessened the pain of others, which makes him a good doctor. Only good people can become good doctors. He doesn't fully grasp her meaning, but insists that must be why she is also a "good doctor."

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/22_zps04865f5a.jpg

They said the title of the drama within the drama. Gasp.

Neither In Young or Doctor Han know where In Hye might be. In their frantic attempt to find her, they run into Yoon Seo and Shi On. Will someone please take the street clothes from this child and have someone pay close attention? How many times can she reasonably just waltz out?

Since a missing child with barely any intestines isn't a huge deal, In Hye isn't found until Yoon Seo starts home. She notes the troubled girl and attempts a return to the hospital together. When the little cupid begs not to be returned, Yoon Seo calls Shi On. It's apparently take-a-patient home day.

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/23_zps8cfc1924.jpg

Our hero reassures In Young, confident that his crush will take care of In Hye. He also goes on to spill the beans about Doctor Han and how he likes her so much he can hardly sleep. In a nice throwback to previous conversations, Shi On hopes that the two of them will gain the license to love, to happily carry in their hearts.

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/24_zpsfb559f3c.jpg

At home, Yoon Seo and In Hye have something of a slumber party. Our little cupid has noticed the rose on the wall, so she wonders after the rejection. Yoon Seo claims she kept it because of Shi On's sincerity, to acknowledge him as an adult. But once In Hye has fallen asleep, Yoon Seo is consumed with thoughts of him.

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/25_zpsb6aa982d.jpg

At the hospital, Shi On thinks of her also. Once he finally falls asleep, his dreams depict his version of heaven (green and full of butterflies). But at the end of the line of trees, In Hye stands silent and smiling.

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/26_zpsb2740b03.jpg

Worried by his dream, Shi On stops by to escort the girls to the hospital. Yoon Seo starts banter, unworried by the difficulty she had in rousing In Hye. But after a few minutes, our little cupid sits up...

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y452/reisette/Good Docteo 16/27_zps4699e08c.jpg

...blood dripping from her mouth. She says she feels strange, just before collapsing onto the bed.
