Goliath1357’s Weekend Movie Guide

Thai Horror

I am a huge horror movie fan and since becoming interested in Asian dramas, I have also found myself watching more Asian films. The concept of horror is so different in each country and that never ceases to fascinate me. I am still relatively new to Thai films but they are quickly becoming my favorite country for horror. Thai horror is very unique and uses concepts and story lines that I haven’t seen a billion times over. I also love the fact that all the Thai horror that I have watched have had (1) a good twist that fits the story and I didn't predict ahead of time and (2) an unhappy ending, meaning the protagonist doesn't always survive unscathed-I usually find this type of ending in a horror movie far more satisfying and creepy.

Alone

Synopsis: Pim and Ploy are conjoined twins who are very close but very different. The twins underwent surgery to separate but Ploy did not survive. Years later, Pim is living in Korea with her boyfriend but has to travel back to Thailand after her mother suffers a stroke. While back at home, Pim begins to feel that her twin sister is haunting her.

Alone was made by the same guys that also directed Shutter, which is one of my favorite Asian horror films. This movie is equally as good with great pacing (a must for me, especially in Asian horror films), great acting and an interesting story.

Phobia 2

Synopsis: Phobia 2 is a horror movie anthology and the sequel to 4bia (which contained 4 stories). The stories are as follows: Novice-A rebellious teenage boy who committed a crime is hidden at a Buddhist sanctuary but his lack of respect to ceremony may be his undoing. Ward-A teen fractures his legs and has to spend the night in a hospital but the old, comatose man in the next bed is not what he seems. Backpackers-A pair of Japanese backpackers who are hitchhiking through Thailand catch a ride with the wrong person. Salvage-Karma pays a visit to a woman who makes a fortune fixing and reselling cars in which people were killed. In the End-The film crew of the upcoming horror movie “Alone 2” try to survive a night of unexpected and frightening events.

Horror movie anthologies are really hard to get right. Most of the ones I have seen usually end up having one decent story amidst a lot of terrible ones. I was pleasantly surprised by this film as all the stories are good. My personal favorite was In the End, a horror comedy and made by the same guys as Shutter and Alone (I suggest watching Alone before you watch this as it also stars the same lead actress and it’s about a fake sequel).

Art of the Devil 2

Synopsis: Six high school friends seek the help of a monk to curse their coach who molested them each at gunpoint. A few years later the friends are reunited but they soon discover that old grudges die hard.

Art of the Devil is the second in a trilogy that focuses on revenge, curses and black magic. This is the best in the series although the whole series is worth watching. It features a lot of interesting deaths and unexpected twists. It is a great example of the uniqueness of Thai horror.

Long Weekend

Synopsis: A group of friends travel to a small, private island for a weekend trip. However, Unbeknownst to them is the fact that the there is a large shrine on the island that holds evil spirits who are about to be released.

Long weekend is an interesting horror film with a good twist. The ghosts in the film are creepy and frighteningly intelligent. The setting of the shrine is another element that I haven't seen in many horror films but is actually quite unnerving.

Those are some of my favorite Thai horror films and I hope you check them out. Are there any other Thai films that I failed to mention that you would recommend?
