Swhite's Weekend Movie Picks

These movies all revolve around the topic of love. All of them portray a different aspect of it, and not an aspect that one generally would think of when the concept comes to mind. All these movies show that love is not always simple and certainly not always happy.

Bad Girls

Country: Taiwan          Year: 2012          Genre: Action, Comedy, Romance

Ah Dan is a simple but boyish school girl, whose life revolves around her mission to protect the girls and women from her town with her two best friends Pei Pei and Xiao Mi. The three call themselves "Bad Girls". One day a movie producer starts shooting in Ah Dan´s School, and the lead role is placed upon her due to a lesion suffered by the original leading lady. She is then forced to act alongside Justin, a young popular actor whose arrogance annoys Ah Dan to the core. How will their relationship progress?

I'll confess that I watched this movie with the sole purpose of seeing Mike He's handsome face, but in the end the movie turned out to be quite entertaining. This movie presents a very quirky kind of romance because the leading lady has never been in love, and she is quite boyish. So when she understands that she is in love she doesn’t really know how to act. Although Mike's performance is just alright, Ella Chen's is amazing. You could almost believe that she's like that in real life.

The movie doesn't really have a very deep plot, but it definitely can make you laugh for a while. Also, it shows that love sometimes doesn't progress smoothly, and once in a while you have to wait to enjoy a happy relationship.

Sad Movie

Country: South Korea          Year: 2005          Genre: Melodrama, Romance

This movie shows the lives of four pairs of people who are faced with breaking points in their respective lives. Be it the possibility of marriage, a breakup, an unrequited love or sickness; all these people try to deal as best as they can with these situations. But will everything go according to what they have planned? Here we see how the decisions they make affect the conclusion of their stories.

This movie definitely honors its name, because I cried my eyes off most of the time. Still it shows how love relationships end, and not always voluntarily. I included this movie here because it shows how normal people deal with real life love losses, and not only from a breakup, but from the death of a loved one too. Usually movies that deal with loss try to portray how the character gets over it in like a month, but in this movie it can be seen that the distress over a loss is not a feeling that can be easily shaken off.

If you´re not afraid to cry a little, and are in the mood for a real and moving plot this is surely a good pick for you.

Usagi Drop

Country: Japan          Year: 2011          Genre: Life, Family

Daikichi is a 27-year old man who is faced with a difficult decision. When he attends his grandfather’s funeral he discovers the old man had an illegitimate child with an unknown mother (a fact that causes shame to his whole family) resulting in the rejection of the child. The little girl Rin, who is only 6 years old, is then taken by Daikichi, and so their journey as a family begins. The movie shows how the relationship between aunt and nephew develops.

Usagi Drop is a movie adapted from a manga which I truly haven't read, but after watching the movie I really felt like giving it a try. First I should say that I watched it because I thought that Rin was cute as a button, but when I had finished I really thought that it was really worth my time. The movie portrays the relationship of a little girl (Rin) and her nephew (Daikichi) turned legal guardian. They both have a hard time adapting to their new life at first, but in the end prove that they don’t need to be father and daughter to love each other as if they were. This is one of my favorite movies, and I can watch it a million times, because the progression of their relation as an unconventional family is really touching. Also, throughout the obstacles and experiences they face that process is never overshadowed by anything else.

Those are my movie picks. I hope that they leave you thinking of all the different sides love can be perceived from, not only the sweet easy ones.
