editSynopsis

Ip Man is a 2008 Hong Kong semi biographical martial arts film very loosely based on the life of Yip Man, a grandmaster of the martial art Wing Chun and master of Bruce Lee. Set in 1930's Foshan, China, an area known for its martial arts prowess, Ip Man lives the regal life of a prosperous martial arts master. Ip Man devotes the majority of his time honing his skills in the art of Wing Chung, while living blissfully with wife and child in a mansion like home. On a regular basis, masters of the many martial art clubs comes to Ip's home to challenge him to a duel. These duels are all done in the secrecy of Ip's home, as Ip Man is a modest man and never wants to embarrass his peers - because they will inevitably get their !@#$%^&* handed to them by Master Ip. Then, Ip Man's world gets turned upside down by the outbreak of the second Sino-Japanese War and the sub-sequent invasion of China by the Japanese Imperial Army.

This movie is perfect in every way. I loved the story that is filled with action and is totally rewatchable to me. I love this movie and watch it all the time. The acting was amazing and the music went with the movie making the movie even better. This movie never gets boring like there are those action movies where there is like 30 mins nonstop talking and bores you this movie is very interesting and filled with action keeping you interested untill the end. After you finish this movie you will want to watch Ip Man2.

This one is a true masterpiece. The sheer love the main character harbors for his country is just beautiful! The patriotism and the amazing martial art will keep you attached to your computer screen. I watched this movie more than once with the next one and will continue to do so. The story never gets old. I LOVED IT. I can't even put it into words. Let me just say that if you missed this one, then you have missed out on one of the BEST Asian movies ever.

What I found interesting was that according to wikipedia Donnie in preparation for this role worked hard and studied Wing Chun under Ip Man's eldest son, Ip Chun for 9 months before tackling the role. Ip Chun has since praised Yen for his effort, and complimented that Yen is a great martial artist and a fast learner, and has managed to grasp the full concept of Wing Chun much faster than anyone he has taught. Gotta praise his dedication. I also approve of him not taking part in more than two Ip movies- he knows where to draw the line. The person himself, Ip, is very interesting too. The events are loosely based on Ips life but they do evoke the spirit, I think.
