It's just the Thai word for drama.
I feel like I was expecting a more complex answer and the simplicity is leaving me underwhelmed... xD

I've copied a comment I've seen from @rainruma on a drama page explaining. 

Lakorn is the Thai term for play/theater ... It means a Thai drama show, and they are full of "drama" Ugly Duckling, U-Prince and Full House ... I recently learned from a Thai person (@Zig) , that those and similar shows on cable networks are not officially called lakorns, since they are youth oriented series .... Lakorns are dramas w/ "drama", a different genre.
