Being notified to replies to comments and posts?

Sorry if this suggestion has already cropped up but just in case they haven't, I'd just like to share some of my opinions/suggestions on/for this site after having recently joined.

As I've titled this thread, I think it would be nice idea to be notified to others' replies to comments and posts. The only time I realize that someone's written a reply is if I've just randomly managed to stumble onto the same thread before it got pushed back with newer posts or if I happen to decide to look back at a drama/movie I've commented on to coincidentally see a reply. I also think it's a bit of a shame if I would like it for the other party to be notified of my comment in return but they would most likely not get a response because it wasn't brought to their attention. Is this a suggestion that can be made possible?

I had a few other suggestions too but they've all seem to have just vanished from my mind but I'll be sure to input some more opinions if I remember. So far I've only been for less than 2 weeks but I've already quite taken to it and would like to contribute to making it better.

*but just in case they = *but just in case it

Oh, I've suddenly remembered the other suggestions. If there is a possibility for the option to edit posts after I've submitted them that would be great too.

By allowing the option to edit posts and delete posts I can fix any mistakes I've made instead of submitting new posts to continuously write up my corrections.

I know this is a somewhat out of date thread, but I really, really would like to see this suggestion implemented if at all possible. It's highly annoying to have to manually check each forum and each thread here on the boards to see if anyone has replied to you. In editorial comments, too, but I think a notification is more important here on the forums. Is this something that can be done? I know you guys have a lot of stuff to work on with the site and think you all do a terrific job but just wanted to put this out there. :-)

well, there IS an option to get an email when new posts are made in a thread by email (instantly, daily, or weekly), though I have not tried it to confirm it works. it's one of the buried options of the forum UCP (user control panel) here's a link

otherwise you can 'mark forums read' (there's a link between the China forums and the 'what's going on' box). once you've done that, only threads with new posts will show up in the 'latest posts' box with orange icons. this is what I do.

once i've marked the forums read and come back later I click on 'top 5 stats' and select 'view more' which brings you to this page. then you can change the 'results to view' to a higher number of posts (50 is usually enough if you check in once a day). The new posts are marked orange and you can scan them for topics that look interesting. then go back to the forums page and click the 'mark forums read' link so when you come check later the threads you've just looked at are no longer orange.

also, little known fact (i suppose), when you click the little triangle/arrow just to the right of someones username in the 'latest posts' list it jumps right to the first new post in that thread (first post made since you marked the forums read)

...that was longer than i thought it would be, lol

Thanks! I was able to subscribe to the threads I wanted and I bookmarked the control panel page so I can easily access it again. :-)
