editSynopsis

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Osamu Suzuki. Popular scenario writer, Yamaguchi Osamu (Inagaki Goro) is currently dating fashion magazine model Ebihara Yumi (Ebihara Yuri). With a high salary and a beautiful girlfriend, one would expect Osamu to be the envy of all around him. Yet there is something missing in his life. On the complete other end of the spectrum, 25 year old Ota Miyuki (Murakami Tomoko) works part-time at a Ramen restaurant while trying to fulfill her dreams of becoming an actress. Though her parents may have named her Miyuki with the intentions of her being beautiful and happy, the reality is she is ugly. Ugly enough for her parents to worry over her future. Miyuki herself, though she hates it, is also quite aware of this fact. This is where Osamu and Miyuki meet. Shocked by Miyuki's pure and fresh personality, he is drawn to her, but...

Busu no Hitomi ni Koishiteru starts out a fantastic drama. Its premise appears a little typical - the "ugly" girl having the "hot" guy fall for her - but this drama has a sincerity to it that's often lacking. The female lead, Miyuki, isn't the typical glamour model type who has simply been given old fashioned clothes and a dodgy hairstyle to make her a "busu". She genuinely is an average lady, whose charms lie more in her personality than her looks. I liked this aspect of the show a lot. It can be frustrating to be regaled with how ugly a character supposedly is when the actress or actor who plays them clearly wouldn't look out of place on the front cover of Vogue.

  • In both dramas, the lead girls have inferior looks, but end up falling in love. Many obstacles abound in their journey.

  • Both shows ask what is beauty and how we perceive beauty, how do we see beauty in a person we love? Can we accept them as they are, can we accept their change?

I agree with Shiningskyline's review, I think it reflects well how the drama ended up being, even though it started on a very strong premise. That and Inagaki actor lacks something as an actor. I don't know but I just don't buy his acting. The lead actress was, however, really nice and I liked her dad, made me go aww.
