Joe Yabuki is an aimless young man who runs away from an orphanage with no money and no place to stay. He runs into a former boxing trainer, Danpei, who still has a strong passion for boxing. Danpei watches Joe fight and regains his desire to train future boxers. Joe, however, does not have any interest in boxing until he ends up in a juvenile prison where he meets Rikiishi, a former boxing prodigy. They quickly develop a rivalry and a newfound interest in boxing overcomes everybody in the prison, including Joe.

Wooow, this movie is a must watch for every fan of boxing. I was expecting a good fighting movie and it turned out to be so much more than that. The story has a very deep meaning and it's really surprising. The actors were prepared very well, they fought like real boxers. I know that many people think that Yamapi is not a very good actor. I hope that after watching this movie they will change their opinion because his acting was so awesome here, he was always good in my opinion but in Ashita no Joe he is just amazing. The music matched the atmosphere of the movie perfectly and I love Utada's song

If you like fight movies with a good ending then this is your kind of movie.
It starts off with Joe getting into trouble and events lead him to the prison where he begins to follow the lessons from the "old man" on boxing. After getting into a couple more fights he meets the guy who makes him want to really get into boxing by basically Joe just wanting to just beat him.
It shows the intense training and how hard they work up for their fight together.
If there was much music in the movie I didn't really notice since I was too busy watching all the fighting haha.
Some scenes might be a little sad but the ending and movie as a whole I'd

It was a really good movie. I was surprised to see Yamapi presenting such awesome boxing skills, he must have really prepared for this.

Saw this in the theater for free during a Japanese Filmfest, and boy was the cinema full. The story's great (not to mention the actors they chose for the main roles are good looking too, and boxing isn't boxing unless it has homosexual moments xD) Definitely picking up the manga.

I'm a great fan of the manga and I liked it, even thought it was 90 manga chapters in 2 hours. They removed a lot of parts in the beginning and most of Wolf's arc but still it was good. I hope to see a sequel since this movie only cover half of the manga, but it will be more difficult since the second part of the manga is mostly fights than plot.

did you watch the anime? I actually liked the movie, I just can't decide if I should the anime? Especially because of the rest of the story?

I'm watching the anime but since the fansub is really slow so it's not recommend, they only did 33 episodes of 79 and releasing 15 episode a year. Read the manga, it's very good and they release a new chapter every week they should finish the whole manga in less than a year if they'll keep in this pace.
