Dear Friends follows a high-school student named Rina (played by Keiko Kitagawa) who believes that friends are not necessary and that they can only be used in times of need. Thus, she is unable to maintain a decent relationship with her friends and classmates. Her family's relationship is also lacking; her father does not care much about his family and her mother is over-protective. Rina eventually discovers that she has a terminal illness and becomes hospitalized for an indefinite amount of time. In the hospital, she is not visited by her family, but by one of her classmates named Maki (played by Yuika Motokariya). Although Maki tells Rina that they were friends in primary school, Rina does not remember her, so Maki takes the opportunity to re-connect with her. A young girl (played by Mao Sasaki) who is also hospitalized tries to become friends with Rina, but she holds fast onto her mantra of friends being unnecessary. Throughout her hospitalization, Rina begins to lose hope as her well-being falls apart, and she decides to jump off the hospital rooftop as she feels that no one no longer cares about her. However, she is stopped by Maki, who stabs herself in the chest with a knife and declares that she will share the same pain as Rina and that she does not want to lose her friend. Rina shows some hope again when she realizes that she can find friendship in Maki.

This was such a deep drama. It really makes you think about the bad things that happens in this world. The acting was great and it made me cry many times.I sugest you watch it if you have the mood of something sad and serious, not a romancom.Keiko did her role very well and she made me believe in how much suffer have to endure the people who have cancer and how others judge for the looks not the inside.

This is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. WARNING: this movie will pull on your heart strings! This is the kind of movie you watch and realize just how much you have in your life to be thankful for. SECOND WARNING: you will cry! I am literally crying as I write this, but I was so extremely touched by this movie that I had to write a review. I know that me saying, "Watch this movie!" will not be enough to convince you to watch it, but if you ignore me you'll be missing out on an eye-opening story.

  • The leading characters in both the movie and the special are people who take what they have for granted and thus act so. Upon being struck by disaster they both decide to not even bother trying to live but they both get unexpectedly helped by another sick person, a child around them who makes them want to give it their best to proof that things will be allright. Starting from their old lifestyles, Onto getting the will to fight and live back.

The saddest part is when the guy dumps her cause she doesn't have the "nice body" anymore. Some people in life will only go for your looks. :/
