editSynopsis

Makino Tsukushi is the only poor student at Eitoku Gakuen, the school of the ridiculously rich and privileged that is ruled by Flower 4 or F4, a group of four boys who come from extremely powerful families: Domyoji Tsukasa, the leader and heir of the Domyoji World Finance Group; Hanazawa Rui, the introverted son of a large company; Nishikado Sojiro, a player who is the heir of a tea ceremony school; and Mimasaka Akira, a madam killer with ties to the underground. If a student gets on the F4's bad side, he/she gets a red notice and is bullied and driven out of school. Makino hopes to pass her days quietly - without drawing any attention to herself - but one day, she stands up to Domyoji in defense of her friend. The next day, Makino gets the dreaded red notice. Even though she is harassed, Makino decides to keep going to school because she is a "tough weed". She declares war right back on the F4. Her resolve gets the attention of her crush Hanazawa Rui and oddly enough, rouses romantic feelings in her worst enemy, Domyoji Tsukasa. The series is based on the Japanese shoujo manga "Hana Yori Dango" by Kamio Yoko.

Hana Yori Dango was the reason I discovered dramas. I was watching the anime (and loving it) when I found out it had a "live action" version. I downloaded it and started watching it and the rest is history. Going back to the present, a few days ago I decided to rewatch it, because I wanted to see if it was as good as I remembered or if I was just being biased because it was my first drama. My conclusion: It WAS good.
I think almost everybody who is familiar with this story knows that there are several adaptations for it. It all started with the manga, then the anime, then the 1995 movie and then 4 drama adaptions from China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea.

AHHH I LOVE THIS DRAMA!!!!!!! So much better than the Korean version if you ask me.

Story: So if you've read the manga, watched the anime, or have seen either the Korean/ Japanese version you already know the story. For others the story may seem a bit weird but it has a lot of heart and it totally grabs your attention. Its a romantic comedy so its a story based around love.

Acting: Ahh soo much better than the Korean version, much much much better. Though the cast wasn't as pretty as the Korean version they were excellent actors. I already liked Matsumoto Jun from Kimi Wa Petto but this story made me fall in love with him. The main female Inou Mao is SOOO SOOO

  • Both Dramas have storylines who are pretty simmilar. The male leads are both Guys with rough personalities who come from rich families. Both male leads are Heirs to their family company. As the shows progresses the stories come to be about forbidden love between a rich male and a poor female.

  • Similar themes of how wealth affects a relationship except the roles are partly swapped. In BBF the male character is misunderstood while in HMS the girl is. HMS portrays a unique pairing with an extremely nerdy Lin Da Lung and becomes far more of a comedy. Also, HMS focuses only on the main couples interactions.

MDL should have related content links to HYD. Idk what to watch after this. My daughter is dramathoning this series and I only caught up with her at Season 1 Ep 3. We pulled an all-nighter from Ep 3-9!

I read the manga and I felt that this Drama really goes fast. I mean, it lakes good moments which I really liked in the Manga. Not only that but a lot of things that should have been very late, happend before.
I guess they didn't have a choice since the Manga has 200 and something chapters...Anyway, don't get me wrong, I really like this Drama :D and MatsuJun <33333

So I watched...started to watch (ended up dropping it) the Korean version, Boys Before Flowers, but I didn't really like it all that much. And because of that one, I usually avoid dramas with the obnoxious rich guy in it, but I kept hearing about this over and over and OVER again. So should I watch it? And is the ending bittersweet/worth it?
    • samsoons 25 days ago
You should watch it. The ending is worth it (both season 2's ending and the one in the Final movie). If you dropped BOF because you weren't enjoying it, I say you try out HYD instead. It's definitely better than BOF, in all accounts imo.

What are the other versions of this?
    • TrancyHoe Feb 24, 2013
Hana Yori Dango 1995, japanese and it's a film.
I think there's a 'Hana Yori Dango Final' which is part two to this version, but there's also a season two?? Idk
There's also Meteor Garden, which is Taiwanese and a drama
Then Boys Before Flowers, the Korean version and a drama.
And finally the Chinese version Let's Go Watch Meteor Shower which is also a drama.

I Did Think This Show Would Be A Bit Cliche ... Poor Girl -- Rich Guy Love Story But Soo Not The Case >.< Domyogi's Character Was Too Funny "SWEAT HONEY!" << Haha Insider You HAVE To Watch The Show To Know , Ya Know :))

    Exactly,why everyone is loving this?
For me it was dull & nothing special.
I disliked Domyoujis character because of his bad habit to beating & punching everything around him. Ugh.

omfg, I can't believe you! how can you hate hana yori dango????!! :| I watched both seasons and the movie and I loved them all. even when I just listen to the OST I want to cry because the drama was so good!
and yes, domyouji can be quite annoying because of his habit of beating up people but you'll grow to love him if you keep watching it! Makino is the only girl he ever loved and the only person who could get the best out of him.

I don't hate it. I just didn't love it like most of people who watched this. I really don't understand what the special thing about this drama should be. ._. I also didn't like the looks of the actors except Oguri Shun.
But don't get me wrong. I gave this a 7 (Good).
But I gave the Korean version a 9 (first it was a ten but after watching some "Masterpiece" dramas I made a 9 out of it). c:

Guess people just have different tastes :p Personally, I hated the Korean version and I thought the plot, music, and the cast of HYD were all better than BOF's. I assure you that I'm not being biased because in fact I watched the Korean version way before I found out about HYD. Yet, I love Hana Yori Dango to bits and it remains as my number 1 drama. Of course, people just have different opinions :)
