The drama is based on a manhwa with the same title. Tamna the Island is set in 17th-century Joseon times as a young English castaway, William, comes to the island and meets Jang Beo Jin, Park Kyu, and Yan. The name "Tamna" refers to what is now called Jeju.

At first I thought this was going to be really boring from the first few minutes because of the first few scenes with Pierre Deporte\'\'\'\'s (who played the westerner William) terrible acting, but it turns out I really really liked this drama! The cast was great! And their acting, especially Im Joo Hwan (the actor who played Park Gyu) was amazing. I really felt that he had great chemistry with Seo Woo (Beo Jin) and the emotional scenes that he acted were absolutely believable. The only terrible actor was the Pierre Deporte (William, the westerner). I feel like they only chose him because he was the only white guy they could find... His english also sucks even though he\'\'\'\'s supposed to be from England (Pierre Deporte read more

First of all, the story was bloody brilliant. Though, there were many things that were modern in the show; the dialect, and CPR was introduced later in the time. There were also a few slips and slops in the drama. One was that the 'other' westerner's wig was a different color than the hair near his neck. The wig was brown-red while the hair from his ear to the back of his neck was medium brown without a tint of red. The lighting made the mistake very noticeable.
Next, the cast was mediocre, in my opinion. I loved that they made a westerner one of the main leads. It's very different and was what intrigued me to watch this drama. I was a little disappointed when

  • they are both Joseon era dramas but not too heavy on the historical parts ; they both have very good looking actors, beautifull images and good soundtrack ; they both are funny and full of emotions at the same time, with great dialogues... try to get past the 1st ep of Tamra and you won't regret it

So I'm curious, is it better to watch the 16 episode version or the director cut? I want to watch this but I don't want to either miss out on something important or have it drag, so which should I watch?

I'm watching the Director's Cut right now, and it's hilarious, even though I cringe whenever they try to speak English, lol.

OST I loved! and Im Joo Hwan was fantastic in his character. The love story was both frustrating and sweetly tantalizing :)

It was okay. Seo Woo & Im joo hwan were a cute couple! But not that great.

I decided to pick up this drama again after I put it on hold for a long time. I remember I had to laugh so hard when they used some Dutch lines (my native language) because it sounded so off. Sometimes I didn't even notice they actually talked Dutch.

William was really good at Korean!! I liked him!
  • cityhunter83 Jan 14, 2012
i think they picked the guy who played willian because his korean was better than his english. it wasnt the best i;ve ever seen, but certainly there are worse.

The 1st couple episodes were really bad. BUT! it got much better, and there were some completely epic scenes. Even Pierre Duporte's acting got better as time went on. It's too bad his English wasn't better, it might have made the 1st couple episodes much better.

Anyways, I love the story, and I actually really liked the ending. If your skeptical you should at least give it a try, once you get to episode 3 or 4 it starts to get really good.

Horrendous. Awful. Dropped it and ran away from it as fast as I could. And just where did they dig up that French guy from? A French guy playing a Brit? Shock! horror!
