I believe being conditioned by American culture to view the world through a red, white, and blue lens has contributed in no small part to my continued curiosity and interest in Asian television and cinema, as to how they define romance and gender roles.
I don't just watch Asian dramas. I study them.
So far, a lot of my reviews of the Asian dramas that I've binged have been rather harsh and overly critical. It would seem that I'm still judging them by American standards (even as low as they are), which I told myself I wouldn't do. It's hard not to but I really am making an effort to be more objective.
I'm very much a work in progress.
Don't get me wrong. I do enjoy watching Asian dramas for the added value they seem to place on the simple, intimate acts like holding hands or an embrace between the romantic leads.
