The Iceman's strong moments are definitely action scenes. Even thougt a lot of them is digitally improved and there is a lot of rope action, it is still good portion of kung-fu.

But what disapointed me was the storyline. I like this motive, when someone from the past is transfered (no matter how) into present time, but here it is only reason to fight in modern city, rather than in historical one. I had similar feeling from ending as well, because for me, it didn't close the storyline as it should.

I've read several things regarding this movie from writer/director Park Hoon-Jung. And many were offended by the use of anonymous female actresses in here to where I think, if I recall, Park Hoon-Jung even had to announce he'd do a better research of how to portray women in future projects. Well, I'm a woman and I say, The Hell. The thing is, if you're going to watch a movie and be offended or unable to take its content, do a review search first- the great wide-web is full of summary/critique reviews. Yes, there are gory movies which its purpose seems to glorify men and denigrate women but this film wasn't one of them. VIP's basic element was just to tell a story. It wasn't about the use of women or what women stood for here, but about political interest with the center of it all being a psychopath rapist/murderer. So if Park Hoon-Jung's antagonist is a nut bag with no soul, should he had written the character as a mild murderer who thinks twice about hurting women or better yet meekly portrayed that into his movie? No. The antagonist here was written, intentionally, to be brutal to the core. It's what the story is. And for anyone to tell a writer/director he needs to improve his execution of how he portrays one genre so to not offend people is banal. It's like telling a painter not to paint what he wants because the colors/themes he uses is too provocative for the sensitive minds. I suggest people watch what doesn't offend them then. Art isn't meant to be pretty. It's meant to be expressive even if we may find it absurd at times. I'm not denying the volatile depiction and graphic content of VIP, I did find it gruesome but I'm saying it's what it is, a film written to be that way. Park Hoon-Jung is famous for creating weaving complex political/crime stories: The Unjust, I Saw The Devil, New World. So These plots are to be expected.

Now as to the movie, it was a well written plot with all the political intrigue being the force behind it. It portrays how government agencies are taught to view the bigger picture (always for national interest first) before individual citizens. The local cop is but a pawn in this scheme - a lone wolf racing to end an injustice being done to innocent women. I like the leading cast of this crew very much. And Lee Jong-Suk really needs to broaden his horizon. This movie allowed him to do that. It took him out of the redundant typecast romance/rom-com pretty prince for a short while. We get to see that he is capable of other roles so I do hope he branches out more. It'd be a waste of his talent to just stick to easy roles.

Overall - good.

Recommend - It is an intriguing story if one looks pass the disturbance. Only for those who can stomach brutal movies.

forgettable

This was a bad movie . The story was super bland, the characters were not likable. The only redeeming quality about this movie is Mr. Chen Feiyu. That man is an angel and deserves more than this movie gave him.

Story: Never once during this movie was I anticipating what would happen next in this movie. There was no story at all. The plot was very very bland. This movie supposedly tells of a high school romance and what happens 10 years later but there really is not much to tell. I can barely remember a thing that happened in this movie it was so boring.

Characters: The main character Geng Geng was super annoying, I did not like her one but. She just yelled a lot and would heavily breath afterwards for an absurd amount of time. Her friends were forgettable as well, every character peaked in high school no character had any development whatsoever. Yu Hai was just there, I can’t remember him doing much either. None of the characters did much of anything. Chen Feiyu played that role though and he looked really handsome during the time jump.
The chemistry was not there at all, this is because the script and the plot was so lacking. I was rooting for them to not end up together.

The would not recommend this movie to anyone. Only those who are fans of any of the actors present maybe I would recommend it to. For me I watched this for Chen Feiyu and I was not disappointed in him, I was disappointed in the story and script he was given to work with, he did the best with what he was given but he deserves so much better. Hopefully Immortality will get to air soon so we can see him in a role that deserves him and one that he is passionate for.

Although not an original storyline. I did find this movie absolutely hysterical! I also rather enjoy the music. The mix of classical chinese with pop was amazing. It is now definate fave genre of mine.
I think the fact that Wang Leehom wrote, directed and created the music for this should be seen as amazing. For me it was nothing special just your typical romcom but I still found it enjoyable.
I recommend this to anyone.
Happy Watching :)

Interesting movie; at times. The story was one I’ve seen before. Surprisingly I didn’t get lost as I sometimes do when I watch these movies deep with some historical facts. I’m a big fan of Chow Yun Fat but I admit that his movies of late tend to be uninteresting however, this movie was really about the assassins as they were bred for one purpose, to kill Cao. It was amazing to see them come to the realization that Cao wasn’t as bad as it was made to be considering the people that surrounded him. You have a King who wasn’t ruling, officials that were more concerned with themselves than the people. This was definitely a movie that points out the different levels of what is true evil. Do I recommend? Not really unless you are a big fan of the genre.

"In the end, all you have is family."

Red Family, a film about a "family" of North Korean assassins living in South Korea feels dated in some ways, but timely in the never-ending question about what makes up a family.

The Assassin Family lived next door to the South Korean Sitcom Family. The Assassins blended in seamlessly in public but in private were stiff and formal, with the "Mom" who was their team leader constantly barking orders and threatening them. The Sitcomers were wasteful, always ended up in comic situations, and were constantly yelling at each other. Yet somehow, this comically imperfect family forever tainted The Assassins, causing them to question themselves and their mission.

The Assassins also had families back home, families who could be jailed or executed if The Assassins failed in their missions. Little by little, The Assassins began to develop into a real family who cared about each other which was a threat to their mission according to their superiors.

Also discussed was the split family of Korea divided into North and South, and the forces that kept the family apart.

The highlight of this film for me were the teenagers, the Assassin daughter and the Sitcom son. They were cute as they began to bond and form a friendship. I also enjoyed Assassin Grandpa and Sitcom Grandma having a few light moments.

The low points were the moms. Sitcom Mom was always screaming and berating her husband for not making enough money. If all South Koreans were this loud and obnoxious, I'd have headed north myself to get away from them. And even though The Assassins could hear much of what was said next door yet Assassin Mom's voice was always set on screech. The people down the block had to have known that they were North Korean assassins.

At the start of the movie, the Red Family seemed mostly one dimensional. Layer by layer, the rigid exteriors were peeled away to show more of what made each Assassin unique and the fears they had for their families back home. It would have been nice if the film had delved into the internal conflicts they might have had over having so much food available and being in a place where people could speak their minds without fear.

The premise was also a little shaky. The Assassin Family had taken out dozens of defectors to the south, and with all the other spy teams at work, it seems someone would have noticed if hundreds of defectors had been murdered over the last few decades.

Overall, I found the movie entertaining, if predictable. The juxtaposition of the two families with conflicting realities, the Assassins' stress of having to be ever vigilant for fear of being caught by the authorities or condemned by those monitoring them, and their evolution into something more than they were trained to be made for a flawed but compelling story.

At first, I liked the fact this film centered on characters being socially anxious.

However I feel like this movie did start on that topic to then leave it halfway without giving a conclusion on that matter, which I found to be a pity.

Overall it's very confusing. There are a few pieces of story/life advice that are interesting but I really feel like they were mashed together to make one story and it appeared to be very confusing to me...

Apart from the "Sebangou No Nai Ace" song the music didn't really strike me...

As for the acting, it could have been better. I especially expected more from Seto Koji. But to be fair, this is a movie whose aim is probably to be funny and look somehow exaggerated ? So it's not really the kind of movie that will help showcase great acting skills.

Won't really recommend this to my friends. It wasn't boring but it wasn't great either. If you don't mind getting confused and thinking 'what the fuck am I watching' a few times during the 2h of this movie, then you might be able to finish it !

not great, but i don't regret watching.

i had first watched this movie because a) song joong ki was in it and b) it was on the headline of my netflix homepage. i was intrigued by the plot about 30 minutes in, however i was a bit disappointed at the end. i expected a better ending. however the production/CGI was spectacular, let me say. this might be a bit farfetched, however i felt like i was in space. it was so so amazing, the CGI was. i maybe was paying attention to the storyline, but i do wish james sullivan had a deeper reason for essentially planning to kill over 1B people on Earth. the reason, if i remember correctly, was a bit..one dimensional?

I just finished the movie about 10 minutes ago and I will try to find some words to express my feelings about it (which is kind of hard).

At first, I want to make clear that this movie isn't for everyone. You need to have the right humor to like and understand it (Is there even something to understand behind the movie, I'm not sure).

There isn't any specific story, what you should already know after reading the summary, the movie has an overall little plot that follows trough it, but it's not needed.
It has 3 or 4 main "stories" which are put into these 21 short episodes. Between the episdes they play some short cuts from the opening speech and from some episodes.

The movie is divided into two parts named "Side A" and "Side B". After the first part of the movie you got a 3 minutes long "Intermisson", to prepare for the second part (Drink or eat something). When you thought the first part was wierd, the second one is much more wild and bizzare.
Also I want to add, some of the scenes are may inapporiate, kind of sexual and nasty for you, so be prepared for that.

The actors (in my opinion) did a good job. I personally totally buy their acting and I'm still not sure how you even can do such things and still being serious while doing it. Really, how?

There wasn't really any music to name, except some music for specific scenes to dance or relax (?) to.

In the end, I would watch the movie again, with friends who haven't watch it now and wait for their facial expressions and what they think about it. I'm already excited for it!

So it's a overall good movie, when you can deal with the given scenes and have the kind of humor the people behind the movie have. Give it a try, when you're interested in it.

Just watched a very good movie called TENTEN~Adrift In Tokyo, A comedic story about a Loan Shark Collector who offers one of his marks a million yen to pay off his debts if he'll accompany him on a walk of indeterminate time: "Could be days or even a month", he flatly states. Without much choice, the mark accepts the job, and over the course of days, the two men form a special bond as they experience life on the road together.

The Loan collector is played with witty delight by Miura Tomokazu, whose character of Fukuhara is a life-loving person, and his constant chattering about this and that is reminiscent of Charles Grodin in Midnight Run or Kazama Morio in Instant Numa! The hapless debt-ridden man he eventually employs as his road companion of sorts is played with glum moroseness by Odagiri Joe, here rocking the frizziest hairdo ever seen on an asian man! As Takemura, he's a young man who's always felt like luck hasn't been on his side. Abandoned by his parents at the age of 5, he's always looked at life as a series of let downs and broken promises. But through the course of their walk, he begins to see in Fukuhara the father figure he's longed for all his life.

Don't Worry though, the Movie isn't as dark as all that, the story is played very lightly, and, like I mentioned earlier, is pretty much a comedy however you look at it. But the twist and turns the two men go through, the fun and interesting eateries, the fights and the late night-talks all add up to a very sincere and thought- provoking film.

At one point Fukuhara takes Takemura to meet a lady-friend of his named Makiko (played by the ever-stoic Koizumi Kyoko) where they can stay for a few days and it's here that Takemura meets her niece Fufumi, played by the excitably genki Yoshitaka Yuriko: SUCH a cutie, Special mention MUST be made of HER! From the moment she enters, she's stealing the scenes, going off portraying her patented "Woman/Child" girly-girl, the kind that is sooooo cute and ditsy as to border on Mental incapacitation! With her one-of-a-kind high-pitched and scratchy voice, can ANYONE do this better than her? LOL!

Interesting Political Movie

Being a foreigner who has very little to none knowledge of Korean politics, it made me read a lot of this movie’s real-life backstories after seeing the film. It was very interesting and moving. As a viewer, it will make you think and reflect whether Kim Jae-gyu is a patriot or a traitor.

The car scene at last few minutes of the movie was very powerful, compelling, and thought-provoking. Lee Byung-hun did an excellent portrayal of the role; the entire cast was amazing.

If you have no idea of this piece of history like me and you dove in watching the movie, I highly recommend supplementing your knowledge by reading the real-life narratives and facts presented the soonest after seeing the movie so you won’t get lost, balance thing out, and you can form your own informed judgement of the characters and events. I did that and I learned a lot.

History buffs would enjoy this.

As for me, this is a raw but beautiful movie that teaches that ability to fall in love doesn't disappear with becoming old. So you all youngers must remember this when you meet olders and become close friends with them: they might secretly have love passion for you which they suppress inside of themselves. And the fact that they still fall in love is not bad at all, it's exciting, beautiful, but sad at some point too.

Other ideas of this movie aren't shown earnestly enough for me, so I don't pay attention to them. Well, they are problem of jealousy, fairness, guilt, understanding, etc.

It's amazing that the old man was played by actually a young actor. Amazing makeup and acting of the actor. I've become curious about Park Hae Il.

Erotical scenes are so natural here. This made me realize how korean movies are very different from korean dramas. Compared to k-movies, k-dramas are just 'cheap' entertainment industry that washes viewrs minds with tabboed cliches. (No, here are no erotical scenes between the girl and old man, don't worry).

Still I said that this movie seems raw. I don't know...Many scenes feel abrupt, incomplete or draggy and slow. The characters are not shown precisely and deeply enough: they are rather just sketches for actual very interesting characters.

Also here are many beautiful scenes and views in this moive.

I think people should watch this movie to develop their capability to feel different emotions and of understanding of this world.

Don't expect it to change your life

As far as movies go this was as average as it gets. Not great, not bad. It had some interesting parts, and some boring parts and they essentially balanced each other out.
The characters were interesting and I liked the dynamics, but I wish they had gone more into detail about their motivations. Some of them had intriguing pasts I would have liked to see that the movie barely covered.
The overall concept was engaging, but could have been much better.
All in all I would say it's a decent one time watch if you're bored and want something to take up nearly two hours of your time. It's enjoyable enough, and maybe worth a watch for hardcore sci-fi and psychology fans.
So watch it once but don't expect it to change your life. I certainly don't see myself looking back on it much in my future.

This movie had so much potential. I thought the summary was great (I read the summary somewhere else, not here, they basically say the same thing though). A top model gaining weight for love. But she loved him...? Did she? There was no "falling in love", it was just "I want him". That's it.

Then she starts eating. Okay. I was excited because her brother was helping. I definitely thought she was going to gain a lot of weight. But she looks the same, just smaller clothes.

It was funny at times, especially in the beginning. But this movie wasn't anything special.

THE RING/GRUDGE MEETS JEALOUS INTER-DIMENSIONAL HIGHSCHOOL TRAVELERS

This movie is basically what you get when you mix The Ring/Grudge and romantically jealous highschoolers on an inter-dimensional trip where ghosts exist. Hence, I would classify this movie as a romantic-horror film, a mixture very unusual for this genre and exceptionally well executed.

As such, though it's supposed to be a horror movie, it's not really scary at all d/t the fact that most of it is filmed thru a perspective akin to a home video and the SFX/props look really cheesy on occasions. Nevertheless, I found the ending satisfying for the theme of jealousy present throughout the movie.

Acting was a little mixed. But that's b/c some characters were just plot devices while the ones with a dark side to their personality were given more attention and were well portrayed.

In terms of rewatch value, well what can I say, some of the death scenes make my stomach churn (as in grotesque) so watching it once was enough for me...
