Han Ji Eun exudes charisma as a CEO in 'When the Stars Gossip'
Gong Hyo Jin shares how she transformed into Eve Kim for When the Stars Gossip.
tvN's upcoming weekend drama, When the Stars Gossip follows Eve Kim (Gong Hyo Jin), a top astronaut and perfectionist who does not tolerate even a single mistake, and Gong Ryong (Lee Min Ho), who goes to the space station with a secret mission.
Actress Gong Hyo Jin returns six years after When the Camellia Blooms, with the role of Commander Eve Kim, the leader of the space station. Explaining why she chose this project, Gong said, "The fresh setting of a space-themed drama and the novelty of playing a captain, rather than the junior roles I've previously taken in writer Seo Sook Hyang's works, drew me in. Additionally, the familiarity and trust that came from meeting director Park Shin Woo and writer Seo Sook Hyang played a big part in my decision to join."
She went on to describe the character of Eve Kim using the keyword geotbasokchok (a Korean phrase meaning "crisp on the outside, tender on the inside"). Gong explained, "Unlike the roles I've played so far, Eve has no affection or interest in people and instead is only intrigued by experimental life forms. I worked hard to maintain the vibe of an upright commander."
Given Eve Kim's profession as a space scientist, Gong revealed that more than half of her wardrobe in the drama consists of space suits. "The costumes focused on conveying the charisma of a space scientist. Instead of trendy items, I opted for timeless, cool combinations."
Gong Hyo Jin highlighted the diverse visual elements as a key viewing point for When the Stars Gossip. Since every scene is set in a zero-gravity environment, she noted that each moment required extensive thought and effort. Sharing behind-the-scenes details, she said, "The scenes on the space station involved wire-action sequences, which were especially challenging because it's a setting in which I've never acted before. I acted feeling like I was tackling everything from start to finish completely from scratch."
She added, "This isn't a story about space wars or alien monsters, but rather a story about life in space. I hope this mysterious drama, which captures time spent in an unknown realm, will satisfy the curiosity of many viewers. I hope you'll watch to see what it is that space research scientists risk their lives to protect for the sake of humanity."
When the Stars Gossip will premiere on January 4, 2025. The K-drama will be available to stream on Netflix.
