Another year – more dramas based on webtoon. Inspired by Ji Chang Wook’s upcoming work, here’s a list of the first part of the upcoming dramas this year.

If you can’t wait and want to watch something already finished – you can check Itaewon class, KingdomHow Are You Breadand How to Buy a Friendwhich is about to end this week.

---

Currently airing:

Meow, the secret boy / 어서와

You’re probably wondering if this is your cup of tea, me too. I’ll just quote a comment I found and it’s the perfect description of this drama – “I never thought I'd find a drama that can satisfy my "addiction" to cats and dramas at the same time but here we are hahaha” (by naccu)

Based on webtoon "Welcome/Eoseowa” by Go A-Ra, the plot is about a graphic designer in her mid-twenties who dreams of becoming a web-based comic author and has always had a love-hate relationship with cats. One day she meets a cat but as you can guess – it’s not an ordinary one.

Memorist / 메모리스트

If you’re a fan of supernatural and mystery dramas, this one is for you. Dong Baek has an extraordinary ability and can peer into the memories of whoever he touches. On the other side is Han Sun Mi who is a genius profiler and has a big secret.

It’s based on Jae Hoo’s webtoon – Memorist.

Rugal / 루갈

I guess criminal dramas are back and I’m very excited. Rugal left some of the viewers with mixed feelings but if you’re a fan of action and revenge dramas, you should totally give it a try.

It’s based on the popular webtoon with the same name, the story is about the revenge of a cop who lost everything.

Upcoming:

Girl’s world / 소녀의 세계

April, 22nd

The adaptation of the webtoon "Girl's World " by morangg tells the heartfelt story of friendship and growth in high school, where friends make up the entirety of one’s world. It sounds like the perfect cute school squad drama.

Mystic Pop-Up Bar / 쌍갑포차

May, 20th

Hwang Jung Eum and Yook Sung Jae are coming back to the screen with the highly anticipated drama “Mystic Pop-Up Bar” that you should totally add to your “plan to watch” list. It’s based on the webtoon Ssanggap Pocha by author Bae Hye Soo.

Opening only at night upon the rooftop of a building, Han Kang Bae(YSJ) runs the Ssanggab Cart Bar. Alongside Han Kang Bae is fellow rooftop cart owner Woll Joo (HJE) that runs a mysterious food cart. Together the pair provide food and drink to customers that are trying to heal their own internal wounds.

Watching the teaser for the first time, I could totally feel that this drama’s going to be really loud and noisy. (in a good way :D)

Dinner Mate / 저녁같이 드실래요

May, 4th

Adapted from "Jeonyeok Kati Deusilraeyo?" by Park Shi In

Both main characters are young and single, each with a history of broken relationships in their past. They meet one day while trying to dine alone at the same restaurant and they soon become friends who eat together every week. But with each meal, their friendship grows deeper as they help each other heal from the heartbreak they have suffered and soon they must redefine what they mean to each other.

Convenience Store Saet Byul / 편의점 샛별이

June, 12th

The drama is based on "Pyeonuijeom Saetbyeoli” written by Hwalhwasan and illustrated by Geumsagong. Ji Chang Wook is coming with another romantic drama and I’m ready for it, even though I like him more in action ones.

He plays the handsome Choi Dae Hyun who’s in his thirties and owns a convenience store. Choi Dae Huyn is looking for a part-time worker and the quirky Jung Saet Byul comes in and takes the job.

Sweet Home / 스위트홈

June, 13th

Based on "Sweet Home” by Kim Kan-Bi & Hwang Young-Chan, Netflix is coming with this thriller-horror drama and I hope we can see some good CGI.

After an unexpected family tragedy, a reclusive high school student is forced to leave his home -- only to face something much scarier: a reality where monsters are trying to wipe out humanity. Now he must fight alongside a handful of reluctant heroes to try and save the world before it’s too late.

Comic Book Boy Girl / 만찢남녀

June

This drama tells the story of a fictional male character from a romance comedian who jumps out of the 2-dimensional pages into actual life. The plot kind of reminds me of W – Two worlds.

It’s based on “The girl and the boy coming out of manga” by NimNi.

Love Alarm 2 / 좋아하면 울리는 2

August

The sequel of Love alarm (2019) is coming this august with another 8 episodes. And while you’re waiting for season two, you can totally watch the first one on Netflix.

"Love Alarm” is about people who want to know their true heart in a society where people use an app to find out who likes them. To be precise, the app is telling people who like them within 10 meters around them.

Coming end of the year:

Oh Man Sang and Prejudice / 오만상의 편견

Oh Man Sang and Prejudice is a romance drama, based on a webtoon by Yoo Hyun Sook, about a man who was devastated by the loss of his girlfriend so he wants to live cut off from the world that meets a nosy woman and begins a new relationship.

Amanza / 아만자

Based on Kim Bo Tong’s webtoon – “Amanza”, the drama is coming later this year, starring my 2016 crush Ji Soo. The story is about a man who is diagnosed with stomach cancer and undergoing chemotherapy.

I could say the plot isn’t my favorite because the theme about terminal illness is a little old but I’m happy Ji Soo got another main role and is ready to break our heart. Prepare tissues!

True Beauty / 여신강림

The popular webtoon “True Beauty” by Yaongyi is one of the most highly anticipated adaptations amongst webtoon fans. It’s rumored to be released at the end of this year and there’s no cast yet, so be patient.

It tells the story of a girl that turns into a goddess thanks to makeup skills.

What’s your desired cast?

---

The list continues but some of the dramas are planned to be aired in the second half of the year and don’t have a confirmed cast, so be ready for part two.

P.S. Also I saw that the webtoon Superstar Miss Lee is being made into a drama. The story is a romantic comedy about soul swapping. Isn’t this an old and clichéd plot? What do you think?

Which of the dramas are you excited about?
