Someone once told me I wouldn’t be able to relate to When Life Gives You Tangerines because I’m not a “mother.”

It made me think: is relatability the only reason we watch stories?

Maybe she knows your taste but choosing the wrong explanation to prevent you watching it. It's one ultimate tearjerker. Like I cried in every episode since episode 4. And it's a slice of life, multi generations drama. One of my friend found it boring and she didn't shed any tears but still completing the whole drama in the end.

That actually makes sense. Maybe it just came out the wrong way. Now I’m super curious—crying every episode?? Now I’m intrigued. Sounds like one of those shows that quietly hits hard.

Yes, I cried a bit in earlier episodes when there were sad scenes but as it's getting nearer to the end, it became even sadder.

I think it's very well-made. Like it was pretty much everyone's story. Growing up, losing the loved ones, going through hardness and or financial difficulty, moving on from heartbreak, getting hurt by loved ones, and so on. It's actually pretty normal but the tears just keep flowing. So just make sure to not watch episode 4-16 in public. 😅

am not a mother either, but you don't need to be a mother to relate this show give all kind of relationship so try it you will cry like us every single eps

No, relatability is not the only reason we watch dramas. Yes, it can significantly enhance our engagement and enjoyment, but, it is not the sole factor driving drama consumption.

Haha nah, not really. You don’t need to relate personally to get a drama. That’s literally why character development and good storytelling exist, so the audience can feel the story even if it’s not their own experience. Like, do we have to be actual psychopaths or detectives to enjoy a thriller drama? Of course not.

Sounds like your friend’s just being annoying.
