I'm a guy who enjoys watching romance K-dramas, but I’ve been struggling to find ones that really click with me.
From what I’ve seen, most romance dramas tend to revolve around the female lead. That’s totally understandable because the majority of viewers are women, so it makes sense that writers cater to that. You often get multiple guys falling over themselves for the female lead. That's fine, but it doesn’t really speak to me.
The main issue I’m having is that most of the dramas I find are either action-heavy or really slow-paced. But I’m not in the mood for action right now, I just want a good, engaging romance.
The first romance K-drama I ever watched was Summer Strike, and I absolutely loved it. But since then, I’ve struggled to find another romance drama that holds my interest. I’ve dropped shows like Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, Twenty-Five Twenty-One, and others I can’t even remember, mostly because:
The plot felt too slow
There were too many side stories
Or they were told mostly from a female perspective
I ended up taking a break from the genre and watched Weak Hero Class 1 and Bloodhounds instead, which were great in a different way — but now I’m ready to dive back into romance.
What I’m Looking For:
A romance drama with a male-friendly or balanced perspective
A focus on the main couple, not side characters or filler plots
Emotionally engaging but not overly slow-paced
What I’m NOT Looking For:
No slow, slice-of-life dramas with minimal relationship focus
Nothing that centers entirely around the female lead’s POV or fantasy
No love triangles unless it’s actually done well and doesn’t drag forever
If you have any recommendations that fit this, I’d seriously appreciate it!
I don't know if you're game for something old, but I think Ruler of Your Own World might be a good fit. The production value is lower compared to newer dramas, but the story stands the test of time, I think.
And oh, maybe Just Between Lovers? It's been a while since I watched it, though--it's not fast-paced, but I wouldn't call it slow
Perhaps try...
Mad For Each other- Romance Comedy, pretty equally balanced between the leads in my opinion, tho we do get a few more detail oriented scenes from the FL.
Just Between Lovers- +1 If you want a balanced storyline for the leads.. here ya go! I honestly think it delves more into the MLs side just a tad more.. as the viewers we really get to see the hard life he's been through. We get to see both the leads stories... For the pacing, it's probably slower than what you'd like... but the plot makes up for it in my opinion, very emotionally engaging.
He is Pschometric- Good plot, definitely focuses more on the MLs perspective... but a bit on the slower side.
Family By Choice- Pretty equal for the leads... you get both their stories. This one is faster paced than the others. I'd recommend Go Ahead if you like this one.. It's the original Chinese story, and I loveeeee how much we get to see of the ML and his story. Butttt that one is significantly slower than family by choice, and has more slice of life... maybe if you're in the mood one day?
Something about 1%- If you really wanna just focus on the couple and their romance story... here you go. It doesn't delve into the life story or tell too much about either lead... It'll tell ya about their career and personality and that's just about it.... It's just about how they fell in love. It's fast paced, and entertaining.. perhaps you'll enjoy??
My Secret Romance, High End Crush, and Noble My Love- These 3 are quick.. very bingable, meaning there's no slow burn here, you could finish in a few hours. If you really want to focus on the couple's romance and not worry about side characters or side plots these might be for you.. Downside here is they aren't really emotionally engaging.. Ya know? You probably won't get the feels. But they are good for a fun quick watch.
If you're up for trying a Chinese drama there's quite a few that fit your preferences.. I'll just list a couple
Moonlight- ML and FL have a pretty balanced perspective. It's not one over the other. Good plot to keep you entertained, and the romance isn't overly slow. Downside you may not like... the ML falls relatively fast for the FL. They don't officially get together till later in the series but it's quite obvious in how it's shown that he likes her.. No oozing from him tho... don't worry.. hahah
Hidden Love- If you're looking for couple chemistry.... yup here it is... the main focus is the couple, but the side elements don't take away from them. Downside: The perspective is pretty balanced but in the first half wouldn't say it's more focused on the FL, but we do see more of her one sided crush and her side in the first half.. nothing too much tho.. It doesn't take away from the ML.
It's also slow paced for the first few episodes... the romance between the leads doesn't take place till the FL is in college (ep 8)... but once she's in the romance starts flying, and the pace gets significantly quicker... and you'll start to see more of the MLs side.
