Thank you ❤️

Hope

Mom, I'm okay

Harmony

Miracle in cell no. 7

Night flight (18+ restricted)

Te Guk Gi

The last recipe

Children of nobody

Confessions (mostly psychological/philosophical. It is not a movie for everyone, but it is worth the watch. You will either love it or hate it)

I saw the devil (Restricted screening, very violent)

The saddest movie I have watched is Silenced. I don't think anything can top that, but since you have already watched it, I highly recommend, from the ones I commented Hope and Mom, I'm okay.

On the philosophical side I recommend Children of nobody.

@Ackery  Thank you so much for the lovely recommendations! Will definitely check out Harmony & Mom,I'm okay :) The rest I am familiar with already,  Children of Nobody was one of my favorite dramas from last year.

I am glad to see that we got similar taste xd

If you liked The Poet and the Boy, I highly recommend Breathless, starred (and directed and written) by Yang Ik-jun, who played the poet in the aforementioned movie. It's absolutely devastating, and at times a really hard watch, mostly because of the violence--but it's an amazing movie.

And since you loved Farewell My Concubine, maybe try Raise the Red Lantern? I was a total wreck after watching those two, so maybe you would be too.

I'm a great fan of melancholic movies. I love the movies by Im Kwon Taek, he is not very famous in my country. He makes contemplative movies with a sophisticated staging :

https://mydramalist.com/1741-chunhyang (historical, drama, mature)

https://mydramalist.com/9560-beyond-the-years (historical, drama)

Can you tell me why you didn't like "tale of two sisters" and "I meet the devil", the director of these movies makes also sad movies and you can watch this (except if it's not your cup of tea) :

https://mydramalist.com/1903-a-bittersweet-life (action, drama)

I saw you watched sympathy for lady vengeance, you can watch (same compilation) :

https://mydramalist.com/992-old-boy (action, thriller)

For China, I think also you can watch the chinese movies by Zhang Yimou  :

https://mydramalist.com/2836-happy-times (comedy, drama)

https://mydramalist.com/9528-return-2014 (life, drama)

Movies:

In the Mood for Love- I can't even properly describe in words how good it was! Melancholic, poetic, sad, beautiful... A must watch!!! I think you will love it!

Maundy Thursday- This movie is about depression, attempted suicide, soulmates....overall really tragic

Dramas:

Kill It- is action/investigation drama but it has some kind of strong melancholic, tragic atmosphere and one of the parts of the plot is relationship between the killer and the detective so it's kind of philosophical and psychological (like can this kind of connection even exist?)

Chuno - historical drama about the differences between social classes, melancholic, sad, beautiful !

The Smile Has Left Your Eyes -Mystery/Thriller/Psychological/Tragedy/Investigation, tragic atmosphere!

You're welcome!

I hope you like them.

Hirugao : japanese drama and movie

Moon lovers

A frozen flower

Remember

Oldboy

Innocent thing

Nice guy

The Effect was depressing af. but read the tags before watching - it contains many problematic themes

The end of Mr. Sunshine was extra sad but it takes a long time before you get to the sads

71: Into the Fire is sad cause you know... it is war movie

The Beauty Inside movie had this kind of sad/melancholic atmosphere

Drama Special Season 7: Dance from afar has this sad/nihilisctic philosophical mood

Omg thank you so much for all the wonderful recommendations, Chunhyang sounds perfect to me I will definitely have to check it out asap because of your description of the director. I am not very familiar with his name gotta research more about him.

For the case of '', I saw the Devil'' The film was very exciting at the beginning it gave me suspense and an adequate amount of action/violence.  But sadly the entire movie got incredibly stretched out and repetitive. There was a point during the film where I thought to myself '' oh it must be over, what will the conclusion of the movie be like, is the ending going to give the main character a proper release? '' and I was met with a very predictable outcome, the ending ruined the whole movie for me because it felt pointless. But in a sense, the whole theme is about the torture of the main character and the emotional distress he faces throughout the story, I think it succeeds in that aspect but removes the enjoyment from the viewer because of that exact same repetitiveness. The plot in itself makes you frustrated wishing it would end in a faster more dignified way.

Tale of two sisters sadly suffers from the same syndrome, the way it was directed made it incredibly frustrating and tiring to keep up with resulting in a messy outcome. Plot twists are my favorite thing about movies but this film managed to leave me 'confused' instead of 'satisfied' because the ending was executed horribly. Tho I am in love with the cinematography and certain horror elements it provided, this film certainly had its moments but it ultimately failed to make me invested enough to care about it.

But ofc that is my subjective opinion, I would love to know your thoughts on these two :)
