Message Notification Won't Go Away

I've had a notification saying that I have one new message for months now. I don't. I don't use messaging. I have a grand total of two conversations in my inbox from three years ago that I have definitely seen already. Now that red dot makes me think I have a new message every time I log on even though I know it's a glitch. How do I make it go away?
