  • Hijacking

    1. Hijacking

    Korean Movie - 2024

    9.0

A finely crafted piece of cinema with a tightly told story, solid-to-stellar performances from the entire cast and quite a few impressive-looking aerial sequences. The ending is thrilling, deeply moving and satisfying. The last 30 minutes were inevitable - I was crying through most of them - then the final punch is delivered, and you learn this is based on real events.

For all the terrible things humans do, it's nice to be reminded now and then of the bravery, selflessness and sheer resilience we are also capable of.

I'm fairly sure, this will also be the first - and last - time I find myself sobbing over a chicken jumping out of a plane to safety.

Don't make the mistake of almost skipping this, as I did, assuming it's "just another hijacking action movie".

    3. O Alvo

    Korean Movie - 2023

    5.0

A good cast with too little to work with.

  • O Túnel

    4. O Túnel

    Korean Movie - 2016

    8.0

The movie stumbles in pacing, particularly in the middle, and the ending feels rushed and underwhelming. However, the leads deliver great performances and the cinematography - especially the drone shots shifting between the inside and outside of the tunnel - is nicely handled. The visual effects make the collapses feel tangible adding to increasing feeling of claustrophobia and urgency.

The built-in commentary on humanity taking a backseat to money and front-page news is well-executed and humor is sprinkled in without overdoing it. Standout moments include the drone scene with the news reporters and the FL’s final call to her husband. That call, in particular, with the ML’s realization sinking in was heart-wrenching to watch.

I might just switch to Samsung, because that battery life was next level.

  • Alerta de Emergência

    5. Alerta de Emergência

    Korean Movie - 2022

    7.0

Suffered from an overlong runtime and unnecessary added sub-plot. Song Kang Ho and Lee Byung Hun were a delight to watch, and a couple of the aerial sequences were really gripping and impressively constructed. Nothing groundbreaking or particularly rewatchable, but still an entertaining ride. Just trim 40 minutes and land the damn plane already.

MVP: Yim Si Wan, who delivered an unnervingly eerie performance.

  • Fuga da Meia-Noite

    6. Fuga da Meia-Noite

    Korean Movie - 2021

    5.5

Relentlessly frustrating from start to finish due to an unnecessary overload of baffling decisions and mindless actions. Wi Ha Joon was the highlight.
