Great beginnings that tragically devolve thereafter

usagisaiko Oct 28, 2018

You know, where the writer has a great premise and writes a killer pilot/first eps... but then doesn't know what to do with it after awhile? Where you start out loving it and halfway through are annoyed out of your mind? Or, where the story starts out great with so much potential, but then it's dragged out or gets botched with a tedious script? Yeah. T_T  もったいない !!

This list is simply to warn off anyone who starts these dramas, falls in love, and then falls out of love and wonders if they should just stick out the torture in hopes that things will get better.

If you don't fall out of love, keep watching and you'll probably join the troves of fans who adore these dramas all the way through. But if you do...just be warned...they're premises to love and dramas to drop once awesome things start falling apart. #anotherwhinylist #blamethewriters

This ridiculously rated drama...which I admit to being riveted to until the end...just doesn't care about making any sense in the end. It promises to make sense, so believing it, you get way involved. But when you have a writer who admits she didn't know how it all worked herself and was just making things up...prepare to be disappointed unless you don't care either. But if you care about fantasy-type elements needing to have their own logic—in other words, be well-thought-out enough to be believable and meaningful in the context no matter how strange—don't expect anything amazing. It's sad, because had the writer either cared enough to try or been smart enough to pull it off, it could've been amazing.

Totally loved this...until they go to America and everything is just laughably lame. The romance, which initially is sweet and quirky, just loses steam once they go for it. The setting in America is nonsensical and so badly acted/staged, the whole tone, which before was compelling, loses all its tension. And the reveal of the previously chilling serial killer, who also becomes cartoonish, takes all the suspense out of things. Sooooo disappointing!

Seriously have no idea why this snoozy drama was so hugely popular, except that is seems the demographic of young female watchers has more fandom power than we already assume. The first episode is magical and fun and fascinating, but that's it. The romance turns sappy and juvenile pretty quick, and the chemistry is lame. Whenever there's a huge age gap like this, it seems like the younger fans don't recognize that the older actor is restrained because he doesn't want to cross lines with a super young actress or something, so there's really no depth or passion. So the romance becomes boring, unless the young character's puppy love actually seems relatable to the audience.

So everyone who loved Goblin (which I hated after the incredible beginning) seems to think this is a masterpiece, which again makes me suspect it really depends on what age group you're in when it comes to certain kinds of romance. The premise of the story is creative and refreshing, and the first few eps were so well written and witty. I loved the characters, and of course the cast was great.

But the writer couldn't sustain her idea and what could have been thrilling, moving, and magical turned into a tedious, drawn-out, and obvious melodrama that felt like it completely neutered the independence fighters. I don't know, maybe one of my problems is that I had watched Assassination and Age of Shadows late, so they were still too forefront in my mind, and of course both films are excellent. So perhaps the contrast made this story feel more trite.

I was warned and I didn't listen. But the pilot! One of the best I'd seen. And the cast! I love them! This will be amazing! And it was, until things started falling apart midway and an initially strong and fascinating female protag became not-believably weird and boring.

The ending is a classic WTH for most people, and even though I didn't feel it implied what many upset fans felt it did, it was still a pointless way to end. Again, the pattern is that the writer forces the story somewhere it wasn't asking to go. So I join the ranks of people warning you away from disappointment. But if you can stand dropping a drama that promises to be amazing, watch the first few eps at least, because they're so well done.
