As one of the founding members of the theater troupe Zenshin-za (established in 1931), he later became the managing director (zato) of the troupe.
He was also an enthusiastic supporter of communism. Zenshin-za collectively joined the Japanese Communist Party in 1949, but Chojuro was known to actively support figures such as Stalin, Mao Zedong, and the Cultural Revolution. This influence extended to the troupe's stage, leading to negative views towards Kabuki. After being expelled from the Japanese Communist Party in 1967 as a Maoist faction, he focused on mass work for the Chinese Communist Party. Meanwhile, tensions with Zenshin-za deepened, ultimately leading to his expulsion from the troupe in 1968.
