A drama that is a must

I put off watching the wonderful drama for so long (following the great drama, Empress Ki, starring Ji Chang Wook that made me cry for many days) The Red Sleeve is the kind of drama that should not be missed mainly because it is based on real historical events. (It is impossible to escape from the tragic reality of that time) A drama with perfect casting, (the wonderful Lee Joon-Ho and Se Jung who conveyed in such a realistic way a range of emotions), superb acting. It's no surprise that the drama won so many awards. Personally, I recommend reading and watching historical dramas related to Prince Yi San to understand the mindset of the Red Sleeve.

How can you not like it?

The first reason of liking this drama is Li Yi Tong, her role as assassin Wan Mei is played so well, multifaceted and convincing.
In the beginning young, innocent but already full of hardship, she tries her best to bring some food home to her little brother and obviously good for nothing herbalist father.

Even after he sells her to a brothel for two bags of rice ( ( -how far sighted, how long can they live on that-), her will to live is stronger than giving in to her obvious destiny.

In the end desperate and wanting, she still finds a way of living on.

I love Li Yi Tong, I liked her in every drama, but in this one I liked her so far the most. She can display so many character traits in just one role.Really great. Although she is an assassin she never gives in to power and bloodthirst, she ist soft but strong, never killing anyone.Maybe not realistic for an assassin but she has two men by her side, one always manipulating and pushing her but also deeply in love for the first time, the other Chang An.

Chang An (Qu Chu Xiao), her shadow and his undying love and will to give everything for her impressed me so much. Who doesn't want to see a charactare like him in a drama.Torn between personal revenge and his love for Wan Mei, in the end he's always by her side, secretly helping her, pleading for her or sacrificing for her.

Though both, Chang An and Wan Mei, often make everything more complicated by giving in to their feelings, they won't stop loving each other.

Sometimes I had the feeling, that when one of them wouldn't have been there it would have made things a lot easier for the other.
Trying to sacrifice everything for each other but only maximizing the extend of damage that is done is not my ideal way of loving but yes, it's a
"bloody romance". Quite interesting.

Cha Luo as heartless and pain ridden crazy leader of the assassins is also greatly portrayed. You really get into hating her whole personality, even though you get to know how hard her life was. She is just selfish and doesn't want anyone in a similar situation having a better life than her. She clings to her power hungry self as so not to give in to her misery.
Great actress, her cruel laughter still sends shivers down my spine.

Xing Feng, Cha Luo's man, shadow and true love is also an interesting character.I really like the actor. He loves Cha Luo although she is so cruel. You can see how often he tries to pacify her but still wants to do everything for her.

Xing Feng and Cha Luo are the saddest couple I have ever seen in a drama.Him impotent and sad for not beeing able to give her what she wants and her needy and always aggressive for beeing an almighty leader but still a powerless person.

The best charactare displayed in this drama is King of Ning, really impressive. Blind in the beginning, with lots of heart illnesses but also with a powerful inner strenght, he uses everyone for his own ambitions. A lonely but manipulative guy whom you can't really see through. He is the secret puppetry master of everything.

All in all it was one of the dramas which left an imprint on me.
I highly recommend it to people who like to get
carried away by a drama.
I loved it.

=> Nice way to spend an evening (10 x 12 min.)

Mini series where a trio of 3 boys (on a trip to Jeju to comfort their friend who got dumped without understanding why) meets 2 older girls (2 years old). This stay will allow everyone to take stock and make a fresh start.

+++ Jeong Gong Jun and Hwang In Yeop in ML
+ Tells quite well the emotions of the first crushes, first heartbreaks.
+ quite pointillist style
+ OST enjoyable but not memorable.

- Everything is mentioned, without any depth, and the ending is too open for the CL.

=> Nice way to spend an evening (10 x 12 min.)

Loved watching it.. Must recommended drana

The character development of all the characters was so good... I mean the vfx, acting, story plot everything was so good im just obsessed with this drama and even though they got kinda sad ending but the overall chemistry btw them was so nicee.. At the starting drama was full of horror but coming to last eps it was sad & literally hurt my soul & my heart aches whenever i think abt ending and lingling Ruan.. My lingling baby deserved a very happy ending though... He was so kind & polite.... My baby deserved to be loved as the same way he loves everyone but unfortunately the fate was so cruel.. But im happy that atleast his frnds were alive.. Even though they forget him but at least they lived their lives to fullest.. This drama lives in my heart rent free and if you've not watched this drama yet you're missing out best drama so watch it.. Hope this review helped you guys out.... Love all the Singing and Dancing!

Subjective Gut Rating: 8.75

Wow… what a pleasant surprise! I can’t believe I had so much fun watching “Dream High” in 2024, and not find it cringey and dated (Ok, it did take me a couple episodes to get past how annoying Suzy’s character was in the beginning). Now that the cast are A-listers, it’s interesting to look back at how they started. As I am writing this review, I am also watching the concert 🙂

I am quite impressed with everyone’s acting even though it was a first drama for some of the cast members. I think out of the 6 main leads, Kim Soo Hyun did a little better and he’s more experienced than the rest of the cast. His character undergoes tremendous change from the first episodes to the last episode. Towards the second half of the drama, you can see how his character changes just by looking at his eyes. OK Taec Yeon has such a charismatic presence. Out of all the guys, I find him most attractive and can’t take my eyes off him when he’s on my screen. This is Suzy and IU’s first drama and I think they both did quite well. The veteran supporting cast is great, and some provide us with memorable comedic moments.

I love all the singing and dancing. IU has such a beautiful voice and is so talented. Ham Eun Jung has a more powerful but equally beautiful voice. The OST has some amazing songs. The dance choreography is great and I feel like I am really watching idols in the making. Jang Woo Young (Jason) is the best dancer in the drama and also the best out of all the actors. His dancing is cool and stylish. However, I found Taec Yeon dances with more charisma and joy and is infectious. Can't forget Teacher Yang, who is also the drama’s Creative Director and Choreographer. His moves are really sharp and precise. I forgot flash mobs were a thing back in the day, and it really brought back memories, and songs I haven’t heard in a long time.

I really like how the drama gives me a little peep into the idol training world. I’ve seen other dramas which focus a lot more on just singing and dancing, and fighting between students and group members. But “Dream High” shows us more than that. I enjoy watching the songwriting class, learning how to sing with emotions while acting out the lyrics, and even the pitch test. Additionally, I like that they didn’t make it a big deal with the IU’s weight loss. I wasn’t happy with her initial reason to lose weight, but I’m glad she came around. Though the weight loss was brought up in the professional/music/PR world, the issue was not dragged on.

The romance… well, my ship did not sail, but that’s OK. Even though there’s a love triangle/square, it was not bad. Guys are respectful of each other and are both positive influences. Unfortunately, I found the chemistry between the three main leads a little lacking. I like Suzy and Tac Yeong’s chemistry a little better than Suzy and Kim Soo Hyun. The secondary romance is cute and sweet, and provides the drama with limited fluffy moments. I actually wanted to see more of them.

There are many laugh-out-loud moments and very emotional ones. In ep 13, I was very moved by a solo performance with the assist from another member. However, I also found there’s a little too much crying in the second half of the drama, especially from FL/Suzy. I do not like FL’s father and how he just abandons his kids and disappears for a year. The debt collection side plot is quite unrealistic.

Overall, I have a great time watching this. I wouldl recommend this to those who enjoy a lot of singing and dancing, and if you are interested in the idol training world. It’s quite fun to see how young these superstars were back then.

Consistent sageuk

First of all, the number of episodes might be a turn down for some people, even if we talk of an 1 hour episode.

The way the drama begins is very intriguing and draws you in, you want to see what is going to happen next! Of course, we get our usual rivalries as expected and it's sad how misunderstandings make people suffer. More about the story: I have to say I really enjoyed most of it, 90% in fact but I believe the last few episodes were dragged, maybe too dragged for my taste. Everything was revealed way too late and the ending was way too rushed. I needed much more! Also, I wanted one particular character to have a different ending, it just wasn't right.

Acting: really good. Lee Jae Ryong was my favourite by far, he portrayed his role so good, that's why he had a nomination! Honorable mentions: Seo Hyun Jin, Jeon Tae Soo (loved the character development for those two) and of course, Seo Woo, she annoyed me in a good way. All the other characters did a great job as well, but my very favourite character has to be Koo Cheon. Also, what was with the eyes' closeups?

OST: well, it was just one song played almost in every episode, I liked it, but you might get tired at one point. I honestly wanted more variation in the OST.

Rewatch value, not that big for me mainly because of the reasons above. It dragged a bit to get to the final point.

Overall, a really good sageuk, it has something of that older sageuks that nowadays dramas don't have and that's why I enjoyed it a lot in the end.

Don’t judge it by the first one or two episodes (or by the main character’s personality)

So underrated.
Hang on. Every episode get better and more interesting than the one before it.

In general, I don’t know or care much about character development, but this drama has one of the best ones.
I was slightly annoyed by Kim So Yeon's character at first, but upon second look she was a breath of fresh air, and the character really becomes better.
Park Shi Hoo has got a killer smile!
The leads are amazing, and so are their dynamics. I LOVE THEM

The instrumental OST is by Oh Joon Sung and it's really good. The songs will grow over you. And you’ll find yourself having unexpected feelings for the drama, in comparison to the ones you started it with.
I am someone who gets heavily influenced by the impression a drama gives me at first. but this drama makes up for any disappointments or bad expectations.

(I actually started this drama many years ago, watched half, and completed it now. And I love the first episodes more than the first time.)
I loved this drama. It's so beautiful to watch. The story was good, ending was good, the leads were good, music was good, all good in a K-drama way. It came close to heart.

Morally Grey FL Going Against Fate...with consequences

In a nutshell, the FL is going against the big-bad author while making morally grey choices to save herself. The ML ultimately cares for her and has sympathy for the FL, and hardly stops caring for her. However, there are some abusive scenes in the show where the ML is aggressive, and one scene glamorizes his actions as being romantic. Both the ML and FL are morally grey. The story leaves the watcher in anticipation and is not boring. There are some twists in the ending which is open to interpretation of a season 2.

I really liked this drama in the beginning. Actually the first 70-80% was good. It's a family drama, so it's slow pacing which is fine, I enjoyed it a lot.

But once the ML and FL got together, that's when it goes flatline. The story's focus turned to FL's mum and brother. Since her mom was an unbelievably such a pain in the arse character, I find it really hard to waste my time watching her character development arch. My other problem was when ML's Dad passed away, ML was depicted as dead sad. But only few minutes after the funeral, he bounced back to not just being his normal self, but as a happy man with a spring on his steps.

Overall it was an enjoyable watch, great acting from the leads.

This series is such a delight! Wholesome, sweet and refreshing

This series is such a delight! It's the common trope of childhood friends that have grown apart yet this story is told in such a wholesome, sweet and refreshing way. I think it quite accurately showcases the mental gymnastics and struggles of figuring out your feelings as an LGB person. We are three episodes in as of right now and each episode just keeps getting better and better!

I hope that this series is able to maintain this momentum that they've built so far throughout the rest of the remaining episodes.
My only complaints so far are that ever single week the episodes are too short which makes the wait for the next episode even more difficult. Definitely worth a watch!

*Dry Story* FL Falls For Childish and Somewhat Dumb ML

The story is about a FL who has a mission to disciple the ML. The ML has a prior and married lover that allegedly saved him from drowning, which is the basis of their relationship. It is revealed in the later episodes that is actually the FL who saved him. The ML attempts to divorce the FL with the help of the main female villain but ends up putting the FL in jail. The ML gradually falls in love with the FL but the FL has a mission in mind despite her love for him slowly becoming stronger. The ML quickly and no longer likes the female villain AKA prior lover. The issue is that the female is physically aggressive towards which is disguised under discipline. Their relationship is more like teacher x student. The male lead is clinging and doting however he is extremely childish, quickly jealous, destructive (of a fragrance from FL's best friend), and quickly gets mad at the Fl for marrying him to "discipline" him. While ML has the right to feel hurt since the FL was rather touchy with him. However, the ML is rather possessive and was the one at first to tell her that "she could not be his lover" which was the truth at the time and he had the right to disclose that. However, he put her in jail and did not think of the consequences of the ***serious*** accusation he made against her. Despite his intent of their marriage changing, he himself had different intentions at first as did she. However, they never mutually disclosed their relationship to be romantic although it was implied through their physical touch and it being predominately portrayed as a one-sided love.

Unreal How Much I liked This

Seeing the overall rating and some of the comments I've read about this had me really worried about this series, but after watching, I'm Ever 9 and Yi-Ping's biggest supporter. Anti-reset was exactly the series I needed to get out of my BL-slump, and now I'm back in (I think, ask me in another 2 days), and I severely love this series.

Let's Dive In.

I desperately needed something new, something that wasn't a bunch of uniforms or office jargon, and this series was just perfect. It's the first in the BL genre (to my knowledge) that takes on the robot/human trope and I ate every single second of this series up. The first episode had me hooked, mostly because Li Feng (Ever 9) was gorgeous in all of his shots, especially the ones with Yi-Ping touching him and seeing how he looked so real but was just a robot. But more importantly, I think the overall feel of the series had me seated and so excited. Before their second kiss, the tension between them is so strong that you yearn for them to do literally anything.

Now the story isn't perfect. I think they could've gone into more depth about how Ever 9 worked in general outside of being a caretaker for Yi-Ping. I think it's interesting that he can eat, but does that mean he can use the restroom? And there were times when his emotions were so human-like that I wondered if he was just some half-human-half-robot person. I think as well they could've made the plot a lot more interesting by having maybe added a couple of twists, like Yi-Ping maybe finding out Ever 9 was a cyborg which is why he loved him, or at the end, they did reset him, and we have to see him rebuild all of these memories again with Ever 9 -- I don't know, something to spice up the plot a bit. Also, they never go into any depth about the weird connection that the series kept making to Ever 9 and Yi-Ping's dog who died. Was his dog's spirit in the robot (weird)? Did Ever 9 remind him of his dog which was like him finally having a companion again? I'm not sure, it wasn't thoroughly looked into, and I think it could've just been scrapped completely cause it was a little suspicious on the moral spectrum (but then again, he is falling in love with a robot so...)

But again, I loved this, the tension, their outings, the small moments of Yi-Ping falling in love with something he knew he shouldn't. When you look a little deeper into it, of course it's weird and a bit creepy to fall for something nonhuman, especially something that's programmed to do just that, And if you think even deeper than that, it's sad that Yi-Ping's uncle had to program a robot for Yi-Ping, and he that he won't ever be able to just make that same connection to a human person. He technically has nobody except something that could shut off on him at any time.

Their intimate scenes were handled really well. Lots of great kissing, and I liked that they focused more on the love part of the NC than the actual NC part. The series didn't have to make the women so insufferable like his assistant who couldn't take a hint or his student. I also hated that they made Ever 9's lips the color of his skin any time he was shutting off or in the lab, it just looked a little funny. Just some nit-picky stuff, but overall, I loved the story.

Ratings

Story: 8.5/10 - Some hiccups, but overall I enjoyed it. I love the lab stuff the most and watching Ever 9's facial expressions as they programmed him. Their domestic life was so cute, it's literally one of my favorite tropes.

Acting: 9/10 - They did excellent! Especially Li Feng. I think they both had some difficulties in being able to cry (in some scenes, not all), but overall everyone did a great job.

Music: 7/10 - I didn't pay much attention to it, but it wasn't distracting.

Recommendation Value: 8/10 - I really think this one is a good one to watch! It's different from the plethora of BLs that we have at our disposals, and it helped me get out of my BL-block, so that's a big reason too (lol).

Awful show

I could tolerate the poor editing in ep 1 and 2 , and yoo ah-in had enough scenes that I'm not even sure his scenes were cut , but the writing was baaaddd, despite all the noise made about abduction and trafficking of children ,the adults somehow let them always wander off , the younger priest having his faith tested was meant to come off as deep ,but came off as boring , all the talk of the ML being this important person that the bad guys needed , reduced to him having a flash drive with all his work that he gave away willingly.
Did no one think of escaping by ship except the human traffickers. The FL had more chemistry with her female soldier friend than the ML. Despite that , the only thing the show had going for it towards the end was the ML and FL relationship and they butchered that with the stupid ending

Unreliable review

This is likely an unreliable review as I only managed to get through two episodes. But the two episodes were enough for me personally.

The initial scene was relatively intriguing but the actions of our main made no sense from the get-go. Let's say he slaughtered everyone because he was trying to be completely obedient to what he was asked to do. Yet he makes a scene about his regret, and then manages to leave the organization by doing self harm. If those he assassinated were really that important to him to begin with, couldn't he have just done exactly this to prevent himself from being a part of the murders? He makes another scene about how his self harm is part of his redemption, yet when the pain flares up, he does everything he can to ease the pain. Then the odd transition of wearing some mask to disguise himself so he can just drink his life away and be a bum... is pretty distasteful.

Insert the female who starts a fight with him, after an odd and awkward obsession to communicate with a bum. As if she's a two-year old who has never seen bums before. The fight causes damage to the carts of innocent bystanders, and they just prance off as if they are supposed to be respectable good folks. Insert again, some wealthy kid who also just coincidentally happens to be obsessed with befriending the bum out of nowhere after having met him for two seconds. Only for his family to be slaughtered later and this bum just decides to watch for a while until suddenly trying to step in at the last second to be a savior. Insert yet again, the male companion of the aforementioned female. The fight scene between the two is a dramatized dance rather than an actual fight.

Yea... no matter how good the costuming or background is. There's nothing that can redeem these details in only the first two episodes.
