Road to Nowhere

Do I really need to see Jing Boran change a light bulb? That’s just one of many niggly questions that comes to mind as I plod my way through Road Home with a gnawing itch to drop it. It’s a lovely angle of him to be sure (as any would be) and perhaps the audience has missed the point that Tan Songyun’s character Gui Xiao is absolutely enamoured with Lu Chen when she fixes her adoring eyes on his strapping figure as he does what most men worth their salt can do at the drop of a hat. When Li Xian changes light bulbs at the boarding house in Meet Yourself, there are multiple reasons for it. It tells us something about the ubiquity of his character. It shows that he’s a handy fellow. It was yet another bit of confirmation that he was the heart and soul of his village — a one man economic engine. But when Lu Chen is swapping out light fittings, it feels like the director and/or script writer don’t really have any idea of how to integrate all of the elements around the romance. Which is the general feeling I get as the “story” progresses. It’s like watching a reality travelogue that I didn’t sign up for. The thing is, the light bulb scene is meaningless here because it doesn’t tell us anything we don’t already know about Lu Chen. The guy is a bomb disposal expert. What’s a light bulb when there’s an explosive device with a complex web of wiring about to go kaboom? Road Home is a show that should be watched at 1.5 x or 2 x speed or not at all. Which leaves me with a conundrum: Jing Boran’s alluring sonorous vocals gets lost in translation.

On paper, Road Home should have the potential to be equally effective but the mistake is putting an obvious conflict-free romance at the centre of the story. Except for the godson, none of the other characters have interesting arcs of their own. Worse still they feel disconnected. Their sole purpose is to dance around the leads and support their journey as they inevitably pair up. I’m about 15 episodes in and I still don’t find Gui Xiao a compelling character in her own right. Lu Chen gets to do all the exciting cop stuff while she panics around in the dark wondering if he’s going to live to see another day. It’s by the numbers. There’s no curiosity about any of the characters and how they get to the point that they do. 30 episodes is just too long for a show where there’s so little build up or suspense. By the time the leads tell us that they’re tying the knot, most of the key reveals have come and gone.

It’s a mistake to think that slice-of-life dramas have no plots. (Or meander aimlessly without one) They do. And the really good ones do such a good job of juggling multiple threads that those who watch that the balancing act is actually easy. Part of the problem too with Road Home is that Lu Chen’s SWAT activities are far more interesting than anything else in the show. Consequently I inevitably come to this conclusion about these types of police procedurals — they are veiled recruitment propaganda. Ad campaigns for law enforcement because no one in the their right mind would sign up for SWAT and EOD without overt prodding and/or flag waving. It’s one thing to insert propaganda in a crime show, it’s another in a romance. It’s deadly.

SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW STORY LINE AND BOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING

Actors did a good job in delivering their part.
Story is boring... for macho man Swat team I find them childish. Such as peeping on Jing BR and Seven and not letting them have space... childish and sickening attitudes.
Story is draggy... nothing exciting from beginning till ep 22 where I dropped.

The necessary switch of the male lead locations as well as taken up task where it was not even his base was unreal.

If you are romanticist then you may love this drama... I am a romanticist but this really is childish and not my cup of tea!

It’s ok but u could do without it

I was so excited when I saw Seven Tan and Jing Boran starring together and was waiting til the release I’d even got my parents to give me the premium on iQIYI so I could watch it.
Unfortunately I was so hyped for not much at all. The romance was good I loved how there was a general sense for each other and love despite their break up in the past they moved past in swiftly and were very mature about it.
I think plot wise the idea of military and romance was quite good I don’t think it was portrayed very well tho unfortunately it was a longgg series that felt like ages I was wanting more progress within their relationship but rather it seemed to stagger as it went on. I did find the ml quite insensitive at time especially when he was sent with a life threatening task to defuse the bomb his superior gave him the chance to tell the fl but he sent a friend instead to say that he had an important mission and she should take care which simply put her in so much stress and anxiety watching her struggle cluelessly thinking if the ml was ok was simply difficult to watch
I found the fl was also quite childish at times too with simple things annoying her etc I love both actors smmmm but I don’t think the script did them justice at all it was too long and too difficult to watch it didn’t have that binge worthy vibe to it either and I really wish they would hv got a better storyline as it would hv helped so muchhh
If anything the romance scenes r worth rewatching otherwise its mid

Its okay

the show for me its too long. 30 ep to much. din like the way they rewind all their old love story its all over the place.

chemistry of the leads are okay. i was paying more attention on ML. only reason I finished the show is because of him. 😅 the way he cuddle her, kiss her. top notch 😂

i love the police training parts too. makes me watch them. others i keep fast forwarding. really to slow paced for me.

overall okay. not super great but for jing boran, it was worth it.

can try if you wanna give it a go.

MUNDANE DIALOG

Don't get to watch Jing BoRan much, in 'The League of Noblemen' he's kind of a flamboyant character - not liking his character so much. But I always adore Seven Tan, in her many drama I love her more.

The story went back to Junior High, Seven Tan was always great as a young student while to BoRan looked too muscle up and older compare with other students around. They've fallen in love and promised each other not to breaking up, as they grew older with their choice of education, they grew apart and broke up permanently. One was to becoming a financial-investor who live in Beijing while the other as a Captain in SWAT Elite Team in Qining City. They met again and rekindle the relationship. There're hurdle about debts, family dynamic for both, long friendship, fostering a child, and work.

Jing BoRan is hot but a lousy man (in love), pretty serious character and little (or boring) conversationalist. They both still love each other but with nothing much to talk about, I wonder how this relationship going. He's though pretty straight forward 'do you like me' and 'do you still love me' and 'I'll save money to marry you', besides all that was mundane dialog. Thus, Seven Tan character wasn't any better!! Didn't say much. I don't know about the novel, I think the screen writer needs more practice to make dialog more witty and lively, lots of time they both were just staring each other without much exchange. Still ep 15, done trying to watch this drama. Cute puppy though..

Slow-moving but lovely

This is wonderfully well written, no unnecessary side-stories or plot-drivers, simply a very detailed overview of a relationship that only developed over many years. It's so slow-moving that it's almost the same speed as living your own life, and it has that quality of real thoughts and emotions slowly developing, too. Over time we get to know why things were so difficult to get going and cheer on the main couple as they choose to make it work anyway. Highlights of the series so far: adult children choosing their own partners even if the parents don't approve (!!!) Also the funniest marriage proposal ever (ep 27 I think, not the main couple.) Lesser actors than Jing Boran and Seven Tan could not have carried this story but these two manage to make it riveting. If you like a lively plot or action, this is not your show. But if you can get into a deeply felt relationship between two people, this is all cake.

If every day "Chen Xiao" is this beautiful, I don't want sunset!!!

JBR and TSY is one of the dream pairing I could ask for, I had wished long time ago to see them together, as I thought they would look super good and my wish came true, and waited for this series to pass, and when it came, seriously it was worth it.

Everyone who knows TSY, they know how hardworking she is and how much commitment she has for her work, and on to of that she is among very few CN actors, who can be crowned among many top actors around the world. It is always love to watch her in any role is graces.

JBR had me much earlier with his modeling days, his sexy instagram pictures, and photoshoots really is one of a kind. He is a pure "dongbei ren", sometimes his face looks bigger (lol) but he is way too handsome, and not to mention "good" at his craft and not just flashy face and body.

I came to love the series, although the aspects of nationalism, and patriotism robes my attention as it feels forced fed, and as per readers that in book these elements are also greatly incorporated - I would have just loved a simple love story. Anyway it is not something that can do anything about, so leaving it as it is and focusing on them.

They shot in northern Xinjiang, of Altay region in Hemu village, known to be one of the most beautiful villages in the world, I really admire the actor to do their in such tough conditions. The scenery is really really beautiful. I love how actors channeled their love for their each other, growing from their mistakes, fighting for what they had to, and reached where they wanted to.

Shout out to the kid acting, very handsome "xiao gege" sublime, and mature acting, hope when becomes an adult he will gets his due leading role, as he is amazing at his job.

Loved this series and when it comes to CN series, I shut my critic valve and look for other aspects that I know I will love.

Jing Bo Ran a discovery

This is a nice one with beautiful scenery. Very nice acting and Jing Bo Ran a handsome discovery for me, i saw some other dramas with him, but didn't pay so much attention.
The series go well, but very slow.
Loved the places been filmed, loved the snow and part of the story, but i think it should me more imput from ML. I didn't like when the FL was pregnant and he said he will not be there for her. Even though they had parties within their base. I didn't like when they were in the hospital and his baby was born, he didn't go there to see her or the FL to bring her for him to see her. Everyone came to see him, so they could've make this moment very special.
I do understand the thing being is Special Forces/ army you have to give up more on your family, but for life events like this you should be there. In all China is only one person that can do the job? I just didn't feel his love in the end.
Well this was my rant :), but i still enjoyed it.

Bad pacing and direction overshadow excellent performances and great chemistry between leads

==Breakdown==
Background plot - 70%
Romance - 25%
Misc comedy - 5%

Background plot - boring
Romantic chemistry - Excellent
Misc comedy - fine
Production value - Good

The direction choices often had me scratching my head. There were so many scenes of them walking, driving, moving from one room to another, making food, etc. with no dialogue. Like, why do we need to see her walking down a full flight of stairs? And him driving four blocks in silence?

Also, the background plot was boring and nonsensical. The best part of the drama were the very few scenes where the two leads actually shared screen time. This drama would've benefited from being half as long.

A Quiet, Tender Reunion That Proves Love Grows Stronger With Time.

"Road Home" is a touching modern romance that tells the story of Gui Xiao and Lu Yanchen, two former lovers who reunite years after their separation. The series delicately weaves past and present, slowly revealing the emotional depth and history between them. While Gui Xiao has built a life in the city, Lu Yanchen has spent years in disciplined, often dangerous military service. Their reunion is both tender and awkward-filled with unspoken emotions, old wounds, and lingering affection. What makes this drama stand out is its subtle emotional pacing and realistic portrayal of two people trying to rebuild something that was once deeply meaningful.

What especially makes Lu Yanchen a compelling character is his quiet strength. He isn't expressive with words, but his love is unwavering and clear through his actions-whether it's traveling long distances just to see Gui Xiao or silently protecting her in small, meaningful ways. His reserved nature stems not from coldness, but from the discipline, emotional restraint, and scars shaped by his years of service. Watching him love in his own quiet way-gentle, consistent, and steady-makes his character deeply relatable and admirable. I found myself understanding and appreciating why he struggles to speak his heart, and loving him more for how he shows it instead.

"Road Home" shows that love doesn't always need grand words-sometimes, it's the quiet actions, the steady presence, and the unshakable loyalty that speak the loudest.

Beautiful & Comforting Love Story

First Love.
Forever Love.
**happy sigh**

This is such an easy drama to watch. The atmosphere & slow pacing make it so calming; a show to enjoy while snuggled under a blanket with a warm drink. It’s mostly angst/drama free so I wasn’t left feeling emotionally drained. It’s just a beautiful & believable portrayal of two lovers who know the pain of losing one another &, now reunited, refuse to ever let go again.

I enjoyed the layout of this story, the way we were experiencing their history in their memories, meaning the breakup has already happened. That format just flowed really well for me watching this story. Sometimes I don’t like that set up, but I enjoyed it for this particular couple.

So our Leads met while in high school, intentionally on his part. She’d caught his eye so he worked things to his favor & made it possible for them to meet. She quickly came to return his feelings of infatuation & the two began dating. They were separated when he left for the necessary training for his future career, but both vowed to never break up. Unfortunately, they were forced to endure some painful stuff while apart & that coupled with the FL’s immaturity eventually lead to them breaking that vow. It was a split that neither actually wanted, but they let their stubborn pride keep them from reconciling.

When we meet them, it’s 10yrs later & their worlds are once again colliding. Their reunion isn’t a happy occasion as they’re both unsure of how the other feels about them now, but us viewers can plainly see the love & longing in each of their eyes. After a decade apart, the chemistry flares anew between this bomb tech/SWAT Team Leader & the woman he’s never stopped loving. And I was so there for it!

I’ll tell you right now that one of my favorite things about this drama is the lack of push and pull (I, for one, am NOT a fan of that sort of angst & drama between a couple.) **‼️🚨MILD SPOILER ALERT🚨‼️** Their intentions are stated within the first 10eps. Once the ML deals with a messed up family situation ((uhhh - hello!? You can’t accept an engagement for your son to someone he doesn’t even like without his knowledge or permission just to cover your debts!! What the heck is wrong with people??!!??)) that his ridiculous father gets him involved in, the ML wastes no time in claiming back the woman who’s always been his. They’re both all in to be together again, which means we get them as a beautifully devoted couple for a full 20eps! {PSA to all drama writers - more of this, please!! 🙏}

They don’t breakup, have childish misunderstandings, or pull a dumb “for your own good” disappearing act. They’re a solid unit & absolutely nothing will tear them apart again. *happy sigh* Their drama is all in the flashback scenes - them in the present have both matured & learned from their mistakes. Mistakes they both acknowledge & openly discuss, which is very well-done, imo. They don’t pretend as if it never happened, nor do they hold a grudge or any resentment towards one another for their part in their past relationship failing. They both know they messed up, they choose to forgive each other’s mistakes, & now they’re fully moving on without making each other carry any weight of blame or regrets. I really liked the depth of character growth & maturity shown by this part of the story & how they are together.

Speaking of how they are together - this couple is absolutely precious. They have great chemistry, both as friends & as lovers. 🔥🫠 Their affection seemed so natural that I easily got absorbed by & lost in their scenes. They had a whole conversation with just a single glance or a simple touch. They said so much without ever saying a single word. They were head-over-heels in love & they made sure to express how much they cherished their bond. Neither one ever had reason to question or doubt the other’s feelings since they were both very intentional in demonstrating the depths of their love & affection. I was happily invested in this duo & I don’t regret a single moment I spent with them.

I highly recommend this drama to lovers of romance without any big plot twists, angsty tension, or delulu characters. It’s a cast of [mostly] genuinely good people just living their lives & doing their part to make the world better. The close bonds of friendships add to the story, heightening the pleasure of witnessing the Leads’ love for one another. 🩵💜
