Restart(ed) Episode 11 Reactions
Maybe I should say Love Stories because there are 4 BL couples in this series, but the one I liked the most was Chin/Yu, or Chin/U. As the story unfolds we first see that Chin likes U but they lose contact with each other until they enter university where they "happen" to be roommates. It becomes apparent that U likes Chin but Chin seems ambivalent about U and, because of this ambivalence, hurts U and causes him to cry. Chin seems to be ambivalent because Tisa enters the picture and Chin "seems" to like her as well. U finally confesses to Chin that he likes him but Chin says that he doesn't like U "that way." Enter Pat, who definitely likes U and, who wouldn't, U is super cute. But U doesn't like Pat as much as Pat likes U and a competition for U develops with both Pat and Chin seeking his affection. Meanwhile, Chin seems to like Tisa, a vicious caricature of the conniving female. In episode 10 we finally learn why Chin is ambivalent about U -- it's because Tisa is blackmailing Chin's father to make Chin do "his duty" to Tisa and not be a "twisted gender." Tisa threatens that if Chin and his father don't shape up that her father will cause Chin's father to lose his business. Chin's father buys into the blackmail because he views his son as an investment that must produce returns. But Chin is unwilling to go along with his father's wishes so Tisa tells the father that Chin is not "doing his duty" to her so Chin's father smacks Chin around. When Chin arrives at school the next day, with obvious bruises, U's friends realize that something has occurred and begin to question what's happening with Chin. Chin tries to keep a distance from U but when he sees Pat moving in to kiss U, Chin intervenes and kisses U. This kiss precipitates the great reveal when U's best friend, Jed, takes Chin into the stairway and hits him in the face a few times, asking him one last time how he feels about U. Finally, Chin confesses to Jed that he loves U, loves him very much, and although Chin has tried to protect U because of his father, he cannot resist because he loves U so much and can't bear to lose him. Unknown to Chin, U overhears this confession and is deeply struck by Chin's sincerity and his true love -- but he is unsure of what to do with this new information. Jed tells Chin if he really loves U, as he says he does, then "prove it." Given this challenge and advice Chin goes home to tell his father that he will not data Tisa and that he loves U and, if his father loves him, he will let him go. We then find out that his father doesn't love him because he gets ready to give Chin another beat down when, all of a sudden, U arrives and steps in front of Chin to protect Chin from his father. U tells the father that it's his, U's, fault that Chin is the way that he is, so Chin's father happily punches U across the face many times until he has had enough and then leaves -- telling U that this isn't the end of this. Then U turns to face the appalled Chin and they hold each other. Chin tells U he is sorry but U says, "Don't worry, we will face this together" -- perhaps the most beautiful line in the series. And the beginning of a Restart of their relationship.Though it's difficult, Chin and U separate from Chin's father and become boyfriends, beginning a beautiful, loving relationship. We are watching Chin and U looking lovingly at each other in bed, both dressed in green and white sweaters, when Chin gets a text from his father containing a purple heart. Chin sees the text and it's not clear what he does, perhaps typing something cryptic in return, and then Chin and U go back to lovingly embracing each other. It is clear that Chin has separated from his father and is doing just fine on his own, having renounced his father's money and his business. One year later we see that not only are Chin and U still together, but U's friends are also still together with their respective boyfriends, and they are all very happy with each other. There is a reveal at the end about Pat and U that is very interesting and suggests that there may possibly be a second season -- which I would look forward to seeing.
