A must-watch masterpiece
When I first saw the trailer, it already seemed like it was going to be a great drama, I didn't expect it to be THIS good!!This drama is hauntingly beautiful. There are many shows about romance between a human and a supernatural being, but this one is unique because the female lead is the super powerful being who dominates the male lead. In fact, there are many instances of gender role reversals in this period drama. And besides the usual fight between good and evil, the show also tells a very human and healing story -- the two trade the 5 senses, discover the beauty of their respective worlds through each other, and find out what it means to really be "alive".
The sense exchange is depicted very creatively and intelligently, because you can imagine it'd be quite a challenge to convey the sense of smell, taste and touch to audiences through the screen. This is often done through clever use of CGI, colour grading and a focus on ordinary things in life that we may overlook, like the taste and smell of raindrops, texture of skin etc. The overall story is very unconventional and heartfelt, and gives you alot to think about.
I was skeptical about the main pairing initially, but I was surprised how Dilraba and Chen Feiyu have sizzling chemistry both on and off screen. Their acting skills are also equally matched, there were several scenes where I got goosebumps watching them act. In fact, the entire cast gave incredible performances. Although 90% of the story is centered on the two leads, it helped that the writers did not neglect in giving interesting character development for the side characters too.
Overall, the drama showed consistently high quality in terms of storytelling, directing, pacing, cinematography and OST. Almost every episode had a standout scene. Episode 8 especially was absolute cinema that blew my mind. Except for a couple of episodes in the middle where the drama seemed to lose its steam a little, it quickly picked up the pace and tension again. This drama constantly left me on the edge of my seat, squealing with joy and moved me to tears. Unfortunately, I feel my words don't do justice to just how good this drama is. I do love this drama very much and I hope more people will appreciate this gem too.

OG Ending is the Most Beautiful Pain
Just finished this and I love it! I'm glad I started it when I did instead of waiting. Contrary to popular opinions, I truly prefer the OG ending to the special episode one. The ending in the special episode was great, but I just feel like the main one ended beautifully. In my opinion, it's painful but bittersweet, and Duan Xu will definitely be back. Dilraba and Arthur make a truly powerful couple with unmatched chemistry. The visuals, cinematography, and storyline are absolutely stunning—perfect in every way.Was this review helpful to you?

Slowburn Romance of a Happy Ending
Truth to be told, I'm still at the 9th ep of the drama, and so far—I'm obsessed with it!I'm not saying this out of my admiration for Reba or anything —but solely, as a casual viewer and a beginner chiness drama enthusiast. Seriously, the production have surely hefty amount of budget filming throughout the whole series. The cinematography alone is topnotch. Not to add, the amount of visually striking outfits of the female lead. She looked undeniably magnetic through the screen.
As for the acting dept, I can see that there's countless room of improvement. However, that doesn't equate to bad performance at all. It's just that based on my observation (while reading the book and watching the live action adaptation), I feel like the characters in the drama got a some restraints. You see, in the original novel, each characters were described so vividly that it felt like they're right in front of your face doing the act. Yet the drama only managed to cover a little bit of expression.
To sum it up, Reba did a great job in her portrayal as He Simu.

Crítica (Episódios 1–5):Do episódio 1 ao 5, Love Beyond the Grave entrega um começo forte e envolvente. A abertura já te prende com visuais belíssimos e uma história intrigante, criando um clima misterioso e ao mesmo tempo emocional.
A construção do mundo é bem feita, revelando aos poucos os detalhes sem parecer apressado. Cada episódio adiciona mais profundidade aos personagens, especialmente os protagonistas, cuja química já é perceptível e cresce de forma natural.
A direção e a cinematografia continuam sendo um grande destaque — as cenas são visualmente deslumbrantes, com ótimo uso de iluminação e cores que elevam a atmosfera. A trilha sonora combina perfeitamente com os momentos emocionais, tornando as cenas importantes ainda mais impactantes.
O que torna esses primeiros episódios tão envolventes é o equilíbrio entre o desenvolvimento da trama e a construção emocional. Dá a sensação de que algo maior está se desenrolando, enquanto ainda mantém o foco na jornada pessoal dos personagens.
Até agora, é um começo muito promissor que te deixa querendo mais a cada episódio.

The storyline is refreshing, different, and beautifully executed. It doesn’t rely on the usual clichés, which makes every episode feel intentional and meaningful. The pacing is slow, but in a way that allows you to truly connect with the characters and absorb the emotions behind each scene. It may require a bit of patience, but it is definitely worth it in the end.The casting is absolutely top-notch. Every actor fits their role so naturally that it feels like the characters were written specifically for them. There is a strong sense of chemistry among the cast, and it elevates the entire viewing experience.
The female lead completely nailed her role. She brought depth, grace, and emotional intensity to her character effortlessly. Beyond her acting, her appearance is truly otherworldly, there’s a rare, ethereal beauty about her that makes every scene she’s in even more captivating. Her expressions, body language, and delivery were all on point, making her performance both striking and unforgettable. Dilraba outdid herself here!
Arthur Chen is the perfect lover boy. He carries his role with such charm, warmth, and sincerity that it’s hard not to be drawn to him. His performance feels effortless yet impactful, and he brings a soft, genuine energy that balances the story beautifully. The emotional connection he builds with the female lead is believable and heartwarming.
Overall, this drama stands out for its unique storytelling, strong performances, and emotional depth. It’s not just something you watch, it’s something you experience.

it was okay until it was not
Generally it is a decent drama to watch. Not complicated and its an easy watch. I was enjoying the chemistry of the leads in the moral arc especially when they swapped senses and then it becomes so cute. This portion provided some freshness in the drama as most of the plot is about wars. Then it continues to the spirit arc which I was excited for as well but the FL lost her initial character and became a very stoic character. On the other hand ML was super goofy, so at times I felt the balance suddenly dropped? I preferred her character when she was more confident and outgoing. There wasnt any particular incident which caused the change prob why it felt awkward but we can take it as since she was back to being a leader she had to keep composure.However, the chemistry wasnt really there for the spirits arc for at least 10eps. Only when she finally gave in to him they looked happy but writer being a writer soon enough brought in issues for them to figure out.
The visuals in the drama are good and the osts are really nice!

When Love Meets Destiny in a Romance Beyond the Grave
I have to confess, I didn’t have high expectations at first, but I got completely hooked right away. The CG is absolutely stunning and top-tier. The director, Zoe Qin the same talented woman behind Lost You Forever, did an amazing job once again.The action scenes are intense and satisfying, especially Duan Xu's portrayal of a fierce, ruthless general at the beginning. Simu looks breathtaking in every frame, with such a powerful aura. The cinematography, costumes, accessories, and props are all beautifully crafted. All the actors delivered strong performances, and even with so many characters, none feel unnecessary. each one shines in their role.
The chemistry between Arthur Chen and Dilraba is wonderful. Just seeing them together or gazing at each other is enough to make you smile. It’s a shame the kiss scene in Episode 30 was cut, because from the behind-the-scenes footage, it was absolutely unforgettable. Although the story is supernatural, it feels grounded and meaningful, touching deeply on life’s philosophy — birth, aging, sickness, death, and the pain of separation.
Overall, I loved every part of it. If you’re still unsure, I highly recommend giving the first 1-2 episodes a shot. You’ll likely get hooked just like I did.

A Visually Rich Story that Combines Duty, Self-Discovery, and Love
This wasn’t for everyone, but it was for me.There are so many reasons why I enjoyed this. I loved the storyline—it captured my interest and delivered a romance I could really get behind. A lot of romance formulas don’t work for me (most of them actually), but I felt genuinely connected to this one. It was beautiful and engaging, and developed in a way that didn’t make me roll my eyes or lose interest. There were times in the middle where I wanted a bit more of the male lead’s early characterization—war driven and vengeful. Still, the narrative was balanced with other conflicts and subplots, so I wasn't too mad about the shift.
I also loved the darker themes, the underworld elements, and especially the strength of the female lead. Dilraba Dilmurat had kind of lost me over the course of her career, but this—and Love on the Turquoise Land—have brought me back. She portrayed her character exactly how I like my female leads: strong, powerful, decisive, and commanding. But I also appreciated the supporting cast too, even the shifty villains—some of whom found redemption, while others fell completely but still revealed a kind of moral line in the end.
And finally, the soundtrack. There weren’t many songs, but the main ones were perfect extensions of a world I loved watching. They complemented the scenes beautifully and really elevated the overall atmosphere. It was an easy escape for me. Overall, I loved this.

The story lost me. The leads refused to.
Love Beyond the Grave and I had a complicated relationship from the start. I absolutely love the xianxia genre and its spirit worlds. But this one wraps itself in a Halloween vibe that never quite lets up, and that is a different thing entirely, not my natural habitat. I kept watching anyway, mostly out of stubbornness, partly because Dilraba and Arthur Chen were doing things on screen that made dropping it feel like a personal loss.So I stayed. Not because the story earned it, but because they did.
For roughly twenty-nine episodes I was a hostage. A comfortable one, granted, because the costumes alone justify the watch and the OST is the kind of haunting that follows you into your week. But emotionally? The doom was suffocating, the angst relentless, and I spent most of it wondering how I got there.
Then episode thirty happened. He Si Mu finally lets him in, and suddenly twenty-nine episodes of patience made sense. The romance, when it arrives, is beautiful and heartbreaking in equal measure. It does not fix the ending, which is exactly as doomed as it promised to be from the start. But it made me feel something I had been waiting for since episode one.
The costume team, by the way, did not come to play Whoever designed those outfits was on a mission and clearly had no intention of being stopped. Neither did the leads. Everything else? That is between me and my complicated feelings.
7/10. The story was not for me. I finished it anyway.

Beautiful set, enchanting plot
Xianxia drama with a less troupe-y plot and beautiful visuals from the cast, and set costumes. If you like Dilraba, this is a show to watch. Her styling was immaculate and the costumes were a visual treat, and her acting, IMO, just keeps getting better recently (the most recent drama I watched with her as a lead was LotTLPros:
- The acting by both leads, and their chemistry! The FL's loneliness, rage, sadness, yearning, love, resignation to fate, hope, joy etc wow Dilraba had a beautifully nuanced and measured portrayal of the range of emotions experienced by the FL. Same with the ML, have never watched shows by Arthur Chen but the contrast in emotions portrayed by him for the ML was an enjoyable watch.
- I actually liked the interaction between Jiang Ai and Bai San Xing haha they were cute. Feng Yi also provided much comedic relief, and the other scenes were he portrayed a more grounded/responsible/serious demeanor were an enjoyable contrast to watch.
- The OSTs! So beautiful and such a treat to listen to, especially 若能在你眼中!! Gets me in the feels everytime.
- The CGI used in the drama was beautiful and incorporated smoothly, which complemented the portrayal of the fantasy world that the drama was set in, and the sparkly magical skills that the characters had.
Cons:
- The lighting is harsh in certain angles, which reduces the immersiveness of the set (i.e., looks fake), and the CGI at the start was - somewhat campy looking.
- I...did not really feel much from the ML's acting...but to be fair his visuals are not appealing to me so maybe there is some bias there.
- I cannot take Miles Wei seriously in this role lol, his character was constantly oscillating between being a puppy for the FL, trying to seem nefarious and evil, supposedly being power hungry and then scheming to bring the ML down. The characterisation was not particularly strong or distinct which made it harder to feel for him. Still a visual treat to look at though, especially with all the beautiful set costumes. To be fair I might also be biased as I watched his other shows where he starred as predominantly green/beige flag ML characters without much grey area characterisation so...but yeah it did feel like there was room for improvement for the portrayal of the villain role (e.g. Qi Min in Pursuit of Jade where you hate him but you also felt for him).
- There was not a lot of background context to certain motivations, charactor relationships or even the background world building context so you have to suspend coherant logic for certain segments.
- Certain parts of the plot were a bit draggy, speedran through the second half just to know how they resolved it in the end. When that is the main motivating factor to finish a show, there is little rewatch value or memorable scenes which would I would want to watch again.

Beautiful love story.
Love beyond the grave ❤️
The concept of the drama alone was already beautiful, but the execution made it unforgettable.
He Simu a 400-year-old ghost king born without the five senses. She could neither see, hear, touch, taste, nor smell, yet she had always been fascinated by the mortal world and secretly longed to experience what living truly felt like. Despite carrying the burden of a throne she never even wanted, there was still this deep curiosity in her about life itself.
Then she met Duan Xu, a young general who, after everything he had been through, only wanted to unite the seventeen prefectures of Liang and finally live a peaceful, normal life. But fate clearly had other plans for both of them.
What started as He Simu’s curiosity about his sword a long-lost spiritual artifact that somehow chose an ordinary mortal as its master slowly became curiosity about him. And eventually, she discovered that he was the only person in 400 years who could give her the five senses.
She experienced every single sense for the first time through him. Her first touch was him. The first voice she ever heard was his. The first thing she saw was his face. Her first experience of smell, taste, warmth, sound, everything was tied to one person.
And somehow, while she was learning how to live through his senses, Duan Xu was also learning how to appreciate life through her reactions. Watching her experience ordinary things with so much joy made him see beauty in things he had always taken for granted.
That was what made their love story feel so emotional to me. She made him feel alive by simply living for the first time.
How could he not fall for her? This stunning ghost queen whose every movement, touch, and presence completely drowned him, yet she remained almost unaware of the effect she had on him. And how could she not love the one person who became her entire connection to the world?
The most painful and beautiful part is that by the end, he was willing to lose all his senses for her because, to him, watching her live had become enough. It was like she taught him the beauty of life, while he gave her the ability to experience it.
Even though the ending was heartbreaking, him dying and following her as a spirit after losing his senses, still somehow felt fitting for a love this sacrificial.
He Simu genuinely made me appreciate my senses more, the little things we experience every day without thinking twice about them. And Duan Xu made sacrificial love look so effortless and pure.
Honestly, one of the most beautiful love stories I’ve watched in a long time.
