Revenge is a dish best served cold

This phrase by author Pierre Choderlos de Laclos seems appropriate. Four corpses for Wan to deal with this episode and she gives them her all. The murderer has just cause and a beautiful voice to sing opera. Most of the minor characters only manage to get drunk and/or vomit from hangover or watching the coroner remove various organs.

General Zhang avenged

The murders wrapped up the cold case of the military pay theft 15 years ago. The thieves were power hungry bottom feeders that got away with it via duplicity and murder. While the murders are indeed reprehensible, Qing was well aware that if she tried going through judicial means, she and the daughter would have been silenced and the truth never revealed. The ones that profited from their misdeeds would not have been brought to justice. She returned blood for blood and avenged the Zhang family. She waited until she knew that the daughter had someone to care for her, and the misdeeds of her master’s husband were brought to light. This was the only means she could find to be sure justice was done even though the law disobeyed. Cases like this are difficult because law and justice are not necessarily the same thing, especially when those with power and money can skew the system to their advantage. It is quite clear Qin Yan is among those that skirt the law. I am not sure how Prince Yu fits into this, but Wan will do well to clear herself of the Qin household as soon as possible. The more they are investigated, the more vile they prove to be. They are well equipped to remain in confines within the law, while grossly abusing the spirit of it. These are the hardest sort to bring to justice. They are usually well disguised within the system itself.

Five Stars

Loved that they addressed that sometimes, these types of revenge are the only ones that can be done due to lack of power and money. Qin Wan has encountered so many corrupted officials but she tried so hard to abide by her father's teaching because without just laws and good officials to implement them, there will never be true peace. 😢 Episode 19 is a sad episode, it makes you recognize the powerless of those who were abused first and not being able to fight back in a judicial way due to systemic corruption.
