A Crime Thriller With Sapphic Elements!

With a killer on the loose, buried secrets coming to light, and determined women breaking barriers in male-dominated fields, “Petrichor” delivers an intriguing and suspenseful experience.

The city becomes a hunting ground as young women are brutally murdered—their bodies found bound, skulls fractured, and left to rot. The pattern mirrors a series of killings from 18 years ago, and the murderer only strikes on rainy nights. The crimes resume just as the previously convicted suspect is released from prison after serving 20 years.

Inspector Tul (Engfa Waraha) and forensic doctor Run (Charlotte Austin) join forces to uncover the truth, but the deeper they dig, the more convoluted the case becomes.

The show started off strong, pulling me in with its intriguing premise. The relationship between the two leads, Tul and Run, has a soft, quiet intimacy, but at times, their interactions felt unnecessarily prolonged. The background score, while atmospheric, occasionally overwhelmed the scenes instead of enhancing them.

Englot Outdid themselves

To be honest, I really had my doubts about the quality of the series, especially after the last few productions had left me skeptical. This time, however, they far exceeded my expectations. The plot was captivating, and the dynamic between Tul and Ran, as well as the evolution of their relationship, was adorable to follow. Now that the series is over, I already feel a great void; I enjoyed it so much! I remember being critical when the casting was announced, but in the end, they did pretty well for a debut.

Charlotte has made huge strides in her acting, and I hope she continues to do so. As for the plot, I wish they'd focused on two killers, but that didn't stop the suspense from building. I really liked the fact that Ran and Tul had genuine histories and pasts, and stayed together despite the odds. I also loved hating Tin and Big Tech throughout the series.
The actors' performances were excellent, and I wish it had lasted a little longer.

Easy to binge, hard to get over!

(NO SPOILERS)

Petrichor is a fresh take on girl's love (gl) from Thailand. It focuses on the mystery aspect and tackles a lot of social issues such as corruption in the police force, powertripping, and even misogyny in the workplace.

But the beautiful thing about it is how empowered the female characters come across. They power through and rise above the occasion, no matter the difficulties they face. It's so good to see strong female characters who fight for justice. Even the cinematography and attention to detail is unmatched. Never a dull moment in each episode. Also, the leads have insane chemistry! I can't see anyone else bringing life to these characters aside from Engfa and Charlotte. It's so refreshing to see a healthy WLW relationship without the homophobia from their family members.

Acting + visuals + storyline + overall message = 10/10! Kudos to the Petrichor Team!

A Twist for the Win

This was one of the rare cases for me where a later twist not only worked but revived a drama. 

I had enjoyed it for the most part (particularly the leads' fire chemistry), but the cases and villains were too typical and, frankly, predictable. With constant and blatant police corruption that felt cartoonishly evil and the plot only going in circles, the relationship between Tul and Ran was just managing to get me through, things felt stagnant and frustrating.

And then, the twist happened. And everything turned around. Suddenly, the extent and weight of the coverup crashed down, and the past, emotions, and relationships had to be recontextualized and reevaluated. It was devastating and riveting.

I have to commend Engfa for being able to portray such a complex range of feelings on the part of her character, Tul. I felt her grief and admired her commitment to seeing things through, even when she just wanted to live in denial.

From being excited to disappointed to being invested more than ever before, Petrichor did what I thought to be impossible.

I'd recommend avoiding spoilers and going in with moderate expectations.

Why would you name the series Petrichor though?

I know what it means, but oh boy it does not make sense with how the story played out.
I definitely came for the thriller aspect, not the romance because admittedly so, thrillers from Thailand are hit and miss when they include romance. Usually that means the story is awesome and the romance could've been better or vice versa. Here everything could've been better.

First of all, didn't need the uncut version because even with the extremely long episodes the story was extremely lackluster.

It was all so.. meh. The procedurals were laughable, the individual cases were so weak on their own when you realize that they set up an infinite amount of cases to be potentially related to the major case, only to dismiss them as individual cases within seconds of suspecting they may be related to the big case. That is how it usually goes, they have a hunch, it doesn't pan out but they get a new lead from that one, but here it all felt way too fragmented.

The characters - incredibly one - dimensional, the so - called villains were written like cartoon characters, and ultimately there was no real depth to anything in the drama.

And after all that, it was so, so easy to guess who the killer was lol. I don't know if it was supposed to be the shock factor but after a few episodes and reveals, it was incredibly obvious and I'm pretty sure that was the point when I lost interest. I mean yes, I go into a thriller trying to guess who the killer/villain is from the get go, but when you find out who it is less than halfway through the series, the reveal whenever it comes, loses some of it's punch.

I couldn't feel the chemistry between the leads either after the initial banter phase ended, they started dating and chemistry said I'm out of here. The acting could have been better just like the story could have been better, everything about this should have been better.

There were some things that I genuinely liked though, one was definitely the main villain reveal. Not the reveal itself, but the implications of the reveal to say the least without spoiling anything. A couple of actors did do an incredible job, no complaints there and I loved the teamwork moments they showcased at some points. But the rest.. eh.

It was nothing special, a few good twists and turns, the main reveal that didn't really hit, it could've and should've been better, but at the end of the day it was fine I suppose.
