Heo's Diner Episode 1 Reactions
Not many people liked the first episode, but it was a different case for me. I feel that it perfectly encapsulates Gyosan's story before he time-travelled and the kind of person he is—someone who strives to break existing rules to make the world a fairer place. It's evident that he was able to be outspoken with his opinions because of his noble birth. When the other characters, like the children, acted comfortably around him, it was they who were scolded instead. I believe this small detail highlights the power imbalance between those of noble lineage and the commoners very effectively.
Yi-cheom's character was also a great addition. The actor did a remarkable job portraying the role of a cold-hearted noble who doesn’t believe in equality and values pre-existing traditions over integration. I also appreciate how the creators of the show depict the nature of the relationship between Yi-cheom and Mae-chang, the graceful entertainer.
The first episode piqued my interest, and I can’t help but rewatch it, especially that one scene where Yi-cheom confronts Mae-chang after discovering that she was the one who warned Gyosan about his plan.
Mae-chang was such a refreshing character to see, and I hope we get to witness more of her development in the future. She is already portrayed as a remarkably strong woman. Her willingness to do good despite the unfair treatment towards gisaengs like her in Joseon is a brilliant plot point.
Since Eun-sil's character is just being introduced, it's too early to make a full judgment. However, from the brief screentime, we can tell that her character is another formidable woman who doesn’t tolerate injustice. Her decision to stand up for the harassment her female coworker faced from someone of a higher social standing was truly uplifting.
This drama has been such a lighthearted watch. The shot of Eun-sil returning home from the company dinner was beautifully framed, and I couldn’t help but replay it.
I have high hopes since the first episode was executed so well.
Each rewatch just gets better.
