Fight for Love

One of the Few Adaptations that Surpasses the Novels they’re based on!

The FL Chu Yu was determined to get to the bottom of her father’s death and her brother’s serious injury on the battlefield of Fengling, which she suspected to be because of traitors, and won’t stop at nothing even if it means her reputation ruined, scorned and misunderstood by her mom and sister, and marrying a dead general, Wei Jun, who had fallen in battle. This is Chu Yu, a girl who will not stop for no one and nothing until her goal is accomplished. This is how she met with ML, Wei Yun who was the youngest brother of her dead husband. 6 of Wei Yun’s brothers perished in the battle of Baidi Valley including his father the general of Wei army, and he returned home with their bodies in tow, but inadvertantly faced the accusation of crime for valor due to the battle being lost along with the lives of seventy thousand soldiers. Chu Yu, as the eldest mistress of the mansion, received him in the capital and later fought for his release. Although Wei Yun was very wary of her motives of marrying his dead eldest brother and continuoesly opposed her presence in the family, he finally came to an agreement with Chu Yu as he realized both Fengling and Baidi Valley’s battle losses had been connected. With that, both of them started to work hand in hand to investigate, which turned into a blossoming forbidden love.

I love how they changed some parts of the novel which turned out even better on screen:

- the Song brothers to be good with each other, Song Wenchang was very lovable instead of being at odds with Song Shilan,
- The Wei widows to be more involved in the earlier power struggle instead of merely ornaments and actually possess real martial skills instead of only Jiang Chun,
- FL to have more fights and battles,
- Chu Jin is softer and not as jealous as in the novel, repents much earlier too.

I liked how they changed the plot into Zhao Yue becoming North Qi’s emperor instead of usurping Sui’s throne, cuz this version is more believable than the novel’s plot. It always bothered me how ridiculous Zhao Yue’s ascension to the throne in the novel, and the scriptwriter managed to turn this lousy arc into a masterpiece by having Sui internally disrupting North Qi political scene instead.

I liked how ML’s personality stayed true to the novel too, that he would not trade Chuyu for anyone or anything, even if it means defying the emperor. Novel’s ML and FL have always been resolute and firm, and the fact that ML’s loyalty had always been for the land and its people and never for the emperor made it easier for them to look believable instead of the usual blind loyalty to the throne that common generals usually exhibit. In the novel, Wei Yun had no qualm to replace the emperor for another when he saw him not fit for it. So I liked how the adaptation Wei Yun cared nothing about the emperor’s ridiculous expectation of him being a War Saint and would not compromise. And most importantly i adored how the scriptwriter made their relationship pure and sincere, instead of having them sneaking into each other’s room to sleep together and having a child out of wedlock like in the novel. The adaptation’s ending is also much more fulfilling than the novel. A+ for that.

I dont get the blatant accusation about victoria song abusing power by reducing Ding Yuxi’s scenes, cuz in the novel, Wei Yun is always secondary to Chu Yu. The novel is about Chu Yu and Wei Yun’s mentions are even much lesser than what’s shown on the adaptation. I like Ding Yuxi as an actor, I watched this adaptation partly because of the novel and him being the main lead, and even then i felt the production had expanded wei yun’s character much more than what the novel had of him. Not that I am complaining of course, i totally love DYX as Wei Yun, but i dont mind his scenes being lesser than Victoria Song’s Chu Yu because I know that the original novel is a female-centric piece.

By the way, IMPO this is definitely Ding Yuxi’s best show that I have seen so far. And I am glad that he finally met the perfect co-star. I had been extremely disappointed of the FL’s opposite him before this, their characters are always lacking one after another, so I am glad Victoria Song lived up to my expectation. Her action scenes were finely executed and she spared no effort to make it look grand whenever she needs to display Chu Yu’s martial prowess. Other than her being great with action scenes, the credits must also go to the action choreographer. All the fights here are amazing.

The subtle romance here is also perfect for my taste. Theyre not cheesy or cutesy, but more to mature romance that doesnt need the couple to be all too handsy and kissy with each other everytime they meet. I can’t stand the romance when DYX was with younger female actors in the shows that i’ve seen him in, cuz their characters tend to be the whiny-clingy kinds, which I completely abbhor (i have dropped his shows due to clingy cutesy FL which had gotten on my nerves more than my love for DYX). So his pairing with Victoria Song is perfect in my eyes.

Again, hat’s off to the screenwriter and actors who managed to make Zhao Yue-Grand Princess’s love into something worth to sympathize. I felt nothing for this couple in the novel, and I didnt think Grand Princess was that much in love with Zhao Yue too, but somehow in this adaptation, i could feel how deeply they love each other but torn due to loyalty. I actually felt sad for their ending here.

Anyway, honestly my rating couldve gone higher had not for the lack of memorable songs here. None manage to catch my attention and most are slow ballads. Can’t really rate any higher for that section. Too bad. But this is a good piece, i don’t understand how the rating turned out to be so low.

SO PLEASE DONT GET FOOLED BY THE GENERAL RATING ON MDL.

I am betting those are done by Song’s haters. I don’t get from where the hate was coming, i mean i have seen Luoyang and she was great there too. So I dont get it really, was it because she wasnt young, pretty or whiny-cutesy enough like how DYX’s FLs before this were? 🙄 how dense.

If you're a big fan of the leads and/or war dramas then this will do it for you...

The title is appropriate because the leads were definitely fighting for their love for most of the drama. In the first half they were fighting falling in love and then in the last half they were fighting for their love. People complaining about the age gap between Song Qian and Ding Yu Xi are blind because they looked good next to each other. Mainly because they're both ridiculously attractive but also she is only 8 years older than him. He's 30 and she's 38. Not a big deal and with the way Asian women age, barely noticeable. Also, even if the age gap was more noticeable, this CP was meant to have a small age gap anyway. The actual issue with this couple was that 75% of the chemistry was created by DYX. But before I go into that...

The Positives:
1. The supporting characters - The Wei sister in laws, The Songs, The Chus, 678 and the Grand Princess all stole the spotlight. They all made their way into my heart somehow and all experienced significant character growth. The Grand Princess's story actually intrigued me towards the end. She was a total badass and a hero. Also, besides Gu Chu Sheng, most of the men were handsome so that helped keep me staring at the screen lol
2. The fight scenes
3. The historical plot - it wasn't a gripping tale but it was decently executed and made me curious enough to keep me until the end.
4. Chu Yu individually - I always like the dynamic where the FL can beat the ML in a fight. Chu Yu as a person is likable because she's tough and doesn't take crap from anyone. Which is most likely why she developed such a great relationship with the Grand Princess. Their friendship was also a highlight for me. But she did have her naive and immature moments, especially when it came to falling in love.
5. Wei Yun individually - Watching DYX act like a puppy in love is always cute but I liked Wei Yun on his own a lot better. He was more clear headed and clever when he wasn't making decisions based on love.

The Main Romance: It just didn't work. I still like Song Qian but her acting wasn't keeping up with DYX's. I guess her weak points are less noticeable in her modern stuff. Had there been a stronger FL along side DYX than the romance may have worked. But with DYX's intense acting and her barely acting, it was a struggle to watch. DYX was trying his hardest to smother her in chemistry and she just didn't give enough back to pull it off. I think Song Qian is better suited to play modern characters because her acting lacks the intensity and depth needed for period ones. Whereas, DYX thrives in these types of roles.

Although this is a completely different story, I can't help but think about Melody of a Golden Age because my level of entertainment and engagement that I had watching that drama is almost the same watching this one. I have very mild feelings towards both of these dramas even though both stories really weren't that bad and the visuals were actually decent. But as a whole, this drama was slightly better because my complaint list is a lot smaller. This story was smoother, more interesting and with better protagonists. Also, I actually liked the supporting characters in Fight for Love, whereas I couldn't stand most of them in Melody. Without the supporting characters I don't think I would've made it to the end.

Worth Watching..Will re-watch it someday for sure ❤️

i really loved this drama, I had started this with zero expections..cause I read about the male lead is the brother in law of female lead ...
it's kind of forbidden romance for me ...

but but, the both lead character are so firm in their love.. hence the drama title justified..

Starting with good family portray..i like the Chu and Weight family vibes..there are very less drama where this type of harmony showed in families...no back stabbing no jealousy nothing

the weight siblings, I felt like crying when Wei Yun's all brothers and his father died...

I'm kind of person, where I feel bad for side support character too..

when the first half of the drama unveil is about avenging the families..

i thought that the title isn't right..but but
when their feelings developed and it's kinda forbidden to be togather..

they firmly stand side by side..no clique drama of separation and misunderstanding..

that's very mature type of understanding they showed and I just loved that...

and in the other half of drama, they just fight for their love till the end..and bring peace to the country..

i just enjoyed watching this drama..not bored even for a second..

all the characters are good..song siblings, chu siblings...lu qiba..all n all

these kind of drama left me yearn for more...
they greatly set the bar high for my liking to the stories..

well hope, will get another one lik this..

and I'm glad that despite the low rating and negative comments, I gave it a try.. and discovered a very good drama...

The One Fatal Flaw is the FL's Acting

This was another perfect, well crafted story written by the masterful author, Mo Shu Bai.

This is the first adaptation of a Mo Shu Bai work where the main CP has not already been married for years before the drama begins (The Princess Royal, Light Beyond the Reed), or is not forced into a marriage by the end of the first episode (Destined). For once, we're not seeing a married couple learn to fall in love again (or for the first time), but we're seeing two individuals who have no ties to each other weighing the costs and benefits of letting a little stirring of emotions turn into a lifelong commitment.
While fundamentally different from the past works, it is a love story could have worked if executed well. And while Mo Shu Bai set up this couple perfectly to be successful, Victoria Song's basic lack of understanding of the character caused the main CP to crash and burn in a way such that even Ding Yuxi's acting couldn't save it.

CONS
The main CP was the worst, most uninteresting couple to watch and it was entirely Victoria's fault. Honestly their romance peaked when it was just a one-sided love from DYX, but once she started reciprocate his feelings and they tried to "Fight For Love", I was annoyed with them. The main flaw was that Victoria misunderstood CY's character entirely, and instead of acting as a mature, complex woman, she acted like a child blind-sided by a love confession, and then later blindly motivated by love without any plausible reason for romance to be blossoming. They truly had almost no chemistry (I say "almost" b/c DYX can truly have chemistry with a broomstick). And their "love above all else" attitude was infuriating at times, because in reality their love was not so great, was not worth fighting for, and should not have gotten so in the way of the bigger picture like it did.

PROS
EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER had depth, had a purpose, was never tiring to watch. Every side story, side romance, side conflict, was intriguing and worth slowing down for. And I loved every choice made by every character (except for the main CP when it came to choices made regarding their relationship). The story was constantly subverting my expectations with how great these characters could be. And I've watched enough C-dramas to see supporting characters, SMLs, side couples, etc. make infuriating, choices or "noble idiocy" moves or irrationally villainous choices that I was constantly expecting them, but every single time it didn't happen! I felt like I was constantly waiting to get betrayed by characters that I was growing fond of and that never happened (Song Shilan, I am so glad that I was able to root for you until the end, you had all the makings to become a villain or a backstabber, but you were not).
The politics were also great! Every time I avoided picking up the show again for fear of being disappointed by the main CP, we actually shifted focus to the war, to politics, to the bromances, to the great virtues of every side character, and I was pleasantly surprised and not disappointed after all.

I cannot give it more than a 9/10 b/c the show is called "Fight For Love" and that is essentially the only plot line that I hated, but everything else I loved and every actor was a rockstar (except for Victoria). Even though this is the lowest score I've ever given to a Mo Shu Bai work, all of the redeeming qualities came from the additional characters that she wrote, and I can tell that this drama might have even been a 10 out of 10 if 1) The FL was differently cast, and 2) the drama was allowed to do the original rebirth/reincarnation plot line that was in the book (which unfortunately had to be dropped from the drama adaptation due to China's outlaw of reincarnation plots in C-dramas). So I have no doubt that she is still a Top Tier writer and will only produce 10/10 works in the future.

From Obsession to Disappointment, A Drama I Loved Until the Final Stretch

This pains me to review because I was in love with this drama from the very beginning. It had so much emotion and impact that I breezed through the first set of episodes like I was breathing air. I was captivated by the plot and arcs, and I adored all the characters—their dynamics and their growth felt genuinely compelling. I thought the storyline was deeply engaging, and the choreography was thrilling, with footwork that completely shocked me.

But as the show progressed into the later episodes (around episode 30), I noticed these strengths starting to level off. Certain characters faded into the background or underwent abrupt character changes. The narrative shifted focus, leading to an ending arc that felt poorly executed, with a script that didn’t make sense or stay believable for the characters. For me, this was an excellent drama right up until the last ten episodes, and I only wish it had wrapped up sooner or ended after the battles that concluded the war between the two kingdoms.

A Drama Full of Battles, But No Sparks

I don’t think I’ve ever had such mixed feelings about a drama. It’s definitely not a show I would normally choose if I just had extra time, and honestly, if I had known what I was getting into, I might’ve skipped it. The only reason I even started it was because of Yuxi — if someone else were the ML, I probably never would’ve pressed play.

Before watching, I saw so many harsh comments that I expected this drama to be a disaster. Surprisingly, it wasn’t. It wasn’t amazing, but it wasn’t the train wreck people made it out to be. The story itself is decent, and the main couple isn’t bad — I just genuinely felt nothing for them. And it wasn’t only Victoria and Yuxi; I couldn’t connect to any of the couples. Individually, I liked all the characters, but together… the chemistry simply wasn’t there.

What I did enjoy was the friendship dynamic. The group interactions, the sibling bonds — whether it was the Wei family, the Song family, or the Chu family — all those family and brotherhood moments were actually beautiful. That sense of unity and loyalty was my favorite part.

My issue is that the romance dragged on forever without going anywhere. They stretched the “will they/won’t they” to the point where it felt unnecessary. This show easily could’ve been 30 episodes instead of how long it was. There were definitely filler episodes. Oddly enough, the last five episodes were actually the best.

Surprisingly, my favorite couple ended up being the princess and Han Mei — toxic, yes, but they had tension, energy, and something that made me actually feel something.

Would I recommend this? I genuinely don’t know. It’s not bad, but I also think I went in focusing too much on the negative because of all the hate I saw beforehand. Once I actually watched it, I realized it wasn’t nearly as bad as everyone said. The plot has good points, but the writing is far from perfect.

One thing that disappointed me was Yun’s character. His arc lacked depth, and although people said he didn’t have enough screen time, I didn’t feel that — he was present, but he didn’t shine. He had so much potential, and yet the show didn’t give him the growth or focus he deserved.

I genuinely feel that his story should’ve been stronger than hers. His revenge, his ambitions, his backstory — everything was deeper and had more emotional weight. He should’ve been the center, but instead the focus shifted heavily toward her, and it weakened the narrative.

And I hate saying this, but visually and character-wise, the main couple just didn’t match. It wasn’t even the age gap — it was the way they were styled and written. He looked and acted very young and playful throughout the entire drama, while she carried a mature, grounded presence from the beginning. They felt mismatched in energy, tone, and overall vibe.

Could I have lived perfectly fine without watching this drama? Yes.

Fight for Love — but honestly, I’m still fighting to understand where the love is. I didn’t feel romance from anyone. The story carried itself more than the relationships did, and even then, I wasn’t fully convinced by the overall storyline.

As for the war scenes — I usually adore military strategy, but here there was zero logic. The production value was clearly high, but the writing behind the battles made no sense. Beautiful visuals, no strategy.

Still I was entertained nonetheless.

Drama on point!

DO NOT pay any mind to flippant naysayers who only skimmed through this drama! Trust me, it is a really nice show.
I absolutely loved Ding Yu Xi's performance, his expressions were so realistic, especially when he stares at fl with love-oozing 👀... His actions scenes were quite a sight to behold, really good fight choreography & he looked so cool!

Fl wasn't bad either. I wouldn't rate her as a 'beauty' but who cares? She portrayed her character well, & even nailed her fight scenes. I like that she wasn't a mopy, clumsy damsel who needed saving. Rather, she was brave & principled & unafraid to be vulnerable with ml & stand up to the king.

I love how the leads understood & trusted each other, like they could literally think alike & finish each other's sentences. They trusted each other's judgements even if they didn't quite agree on a matter, & were very supportive of each other.

The supporting cast were great, too. Lu Qi Ba was lively & fun, Song Weng Chang was cute & admirable, even the seemingly foolish croen prince cleaned up his act & became a better ruler than his father, who btw, was just a cowardly, selfish pain in the a$s🙄😬

Hanmei & Changming were just...tragic? Their ending went rather differently from what I presumed, but I liked that Hanmei genuinely cared for her.
I did not like how Chu Linyang kept stringing Tuantuan along all because of some warped sense of self-pity🙄

This show highlighted 'noona-love' (love between older female & younger male) and female empowerment. Even the Wei widows were all strong women who could fight.
Probably the only minus for me was the OSTs, nothing memorable nor impressive. And i wish they showed a wedding scene, whether those of the main leads or at least that of Chu Jun & Song Wengchang. That would have really livened up the ending.

Overall, solid drama with good rewatch value 👍👏

This drama could have been so much better.

Why only 7? Because of the lack of chemistry between the two lead actors. PLEASE stop matching older actresses with baby boys. Both leads are good actors, but could only do so much in this drama. And impossible to make sparks fly when Ding Yu Xi is directed to act like a 15 year old begging for his Mom's approval instead of the grown man the part called for. "Shy" does not equal juvenile. The closest thing I saw to sparks was between Victoria Song and Zhang Tian Yang in the first 3 episodes. THAT was possible chemistry. Sorry all, this drama could have been so much better.
