Thank you!! I'm so happy you enjoyed the analysis. Murong Qingyi is such a heartbreaking yet admirable character. I cried for him too. And Zhang Linghe's performance was incredible—he made Qingyi feel so alive.

No redemption. She will lose everything.

You're very welcome! Glad you like my articles! ^^

I put all my thoughts about why I feel the mother" hates" Qingyi. Qingyi must be so confused after feeling instant love for his son Le An. It Is probably proving to him the biological pull is so strong. How could his mother want Li Boze more than her own flesh and blood? Becoming a father is probably making him so upset that any parent could harm an innocent child that way.

The Psychological Trauma of Overdo: Why the Mother's Hatred Runs Deeper Than the Switch

I’ve been thinking a lot about Murong Qingyi’s mother’s vitriolic hatred, and I wanted to break down why her behavior goes far beyond just resentment over the baby switch. It also is not just about her hating him because she did not believe his warning about the assassination. It is way deeper than that. Qingyi might have been the child who she wanted to save her marriage too.

1. The Spousal Mirror & Projected Resentment

The show never fully clarifies if the biological father mistreated Qingyi, but the mother’s psychological motives are clear. She sees Qingyi as a mirror of the husband who never loved her. She is punishing her son for the love her husband withheld.

She deludes herself by claiming Qingyi "doesn't look like their family," but the father’s picture proves he was highly handsome. Qingyi likely looks identical to his dead husband. Because she could never fight back against her husband, she projects that rage onto Qingyi, even blaming him for the father's death despite knowing he tried to warn them.

2. Deconstructing the "Tie-Cutting" Scene

When Qingyi demands she stab him to sever their bonds, maternal instinct doesn't stop her hand. Instead, she freezes because she is staring into the face of the man she was obsessively infatuated with.

Her outbursts are pure projection. When she screams in the preview, "Why did you have to be switched and why is my son such a jerk!", she is raging because Qingyi is capable of loving others—something her husband never gave her. Arranging a toxic marriage with a vengeful woman was her ultimate punishment to ensure he would never find happiness. As Qingyi rightly tells her: "Father did not love you, it was one-sided and an obsession."

3. The Path of Empathy vs. Sociopathy

The crucial difference between Qingyi and his mother is how they handle obsession. Once Qingyi opened his cold heart, love transformed him into an empathetic, selfless person. He broke the cycle. His relationship with Ren Su Su only became destructive when outside revenge and manipulation tore them apart.

4. A Real-World Parallel to Elite Toxicity

This dynamic hits incredibly close to home for me. My own son is a mirror image of me, and his father treated him terribly for that exact reason—seeing him as a walking reminder of a woman he hated. He faced physical abuse and psychological trauma while the other siblings were treated like gold. Just like the toxic elite in Overdo, that family is wealthy, powerful, and entirely consumed by protecting their family name over protecting their own blood.
