A Fusion Sageuk-Makjang Held Together by Vibes, Not Writing
The biggest issue with My Royal Nemesis is not that it tries and fails, but that the writing never seems fully convinced of what story it actually wants to tell. The premise suggests a tight, character-driven fusion sageuk with clear emotional stakes between its leads, but the execution constantly dilutes that potential with inconsistent tone and direction. Scenes are written as isolated moments rather than parts of a cohesive narrative, so instead of building momentum, the story repeatedly resets itself. You’re left with the feeling that the drama is improvising its plot one episode at a time.The structural writing is particularly weak when it comes to cause and effect. Major events often happen because the script needs to move forward, not because they logically emerge from character decisions or prior setup. Conflicts are introduced with urgency but resolved with surprising ease, sometimes off-screen or with minimal emotional fallout. This creates a lack of narrative consequence, nothing really sticks, so nothing truly matters. Compared to a tightly written drama like Mr. Queen, where even comedic chaos feeds into long-term story progression, My Royal Nemesis feels like it’s constantly breaking its own internal logic just to keep episodes moving.
Character writing suffers from the same inconsistency. The leads are not given stable emotional arcs; instead, their personalities and motivations fluctuate depending on what the plot requires in the moment. One episode may frame them as ideological opposites, the next as soft allies, and the next as romantically aligned without sufficient bridging development. This makes their dynamic feel manufactured rather than organically evolving. Even key emotional beats land flat because the groundwork simply isn’t there...there’s no gradual accumulation of tension or trust, just abrupt shifts the script expects the audience to accept.
Dialogue writing also contributes to the overall weakness. Conversations often state emotions directly instead of letting them emerge through subtext or action. Characters frequently verbalize their internal state in a way that feels expository rather than natural, which strips scenes of nuance. Instead of letting silence, reaction, or conflict carry meaning, the writing over-explains, leaving little room for interpretation or emotional depth. This is especially noticeable in romantic scenes, where chemistry should be built through restraint and tension but instead is handed to the viewer through overly explicit dialogue cues.
Ultimately, the writing lacks cohesion, restraint, and long-term planning. It introduces interesting ideas: political tension, rivalry, emotional conflict, but rarely develops them beyond surface level before shifting focus again. As a result, the drama feels structurally fragile, held together more by genre familiarity than actual narrative strength. When compared to Mr. Queen, which demonstrates how disciplined writing can balance comedy, satire, and emotional depth without losing coherence, My Royal Nemesis comes across as a far less confident and far less controlled version of the same concept, one that never fully commits to its own story long enough to make it memorable.

My crude and boorish nemesis!
What a disappointment this K-drama is!1. What annoys me most is Im Ji Yeon’s dreadful portrayal of Sin Seo Ri. It’s almost unbearable! There is nothing, absolutely nothing, regal about her demeanour. It seems as though she and/or the director have read the script for Mr. Queen and implemented it in the most wretched way possible in this role. The way she walks, sits, laughs and drinks – it’s more reminiscent of the exaggerated portrayal of a drunkard in women’s clothes than of anything ‘royal’.
2. Sin Seo Ri’s adjustment to the modern world – or rather, the lack of any adjustment. She’s a bit taken aback by the “metal palanquins”; she feels a bit queasy for a moment because of the speed… that’s it. On a plane, the only thing that surprises her is the lack of legroom in economy class... Sooo bad and so many missed opportunities for comical situations (as in, for example, The Legend of the Blue Sea).
3. The plot hole where, for example, Sin Seo Ri claims she’s never bowed to anyone before… and then the flashback kicks in. I mean, how many writers worked on the script, and did they even consult one another? Nothing fits together, and neither the director nor the actors noticed this during filming? Or is it simply indifference towards the audience and their own work?
4. The story is crammed full of predictable clichés, and Cha Se Gye’s behaviour towards Sin Seo Ri is so utterly implausible that actor Heo Nam Joon’s lack of facial expression hardly matters anymore.
This production of ‘My Royal Nemesis’ is a real waste of what is essentially a good idea with so much potential. And perhaps this frustration is the reason for my somewhat harsh criticism.
Edit: I dropped this drama now, because I couldn't stand it any longer.

My 2026 highlight is complete with this drama
This drama is the light of my life when i never knew i needed it. ,😍🥲 my main reason of watching this, mainly for Imjiyeon but ended up loving both Namjun and Jiyeon caught my feeling/ heart by being themselves in this drama. One thing i noticed that they really showcased their talents to the maximum level of satisfaction.it's not just about their clear enunciation,it's that all the stresses, intonations, lengths, and rhythms are perfectly timed. They emphasized what needs to be emphasized, relaxed where it's needed, and adjusts their pace—fast or slow—as required. Every word is delivered with emotion, and this becomes even more apparent in scenes with dense dialogue. The faster they speak, the clearer they get, and combined with Namjun's unique voice, his line delivery is truly his greatest asset as an actor. Many actors, even those with good acting skills, fall short in their diction and tone, which can sometimes hinder immersion.🥰😭😭
Ignore the complaints, the reason some people criticized episodes 11 and 12 is because they wanted the show to be all sweet... They criticize anything that's even slightly angsty. These two episodes really tested the actors' acting skills in portraying the emotional progression and conflict between the male and female leads, and they did a fantastic job, making the audience's emotions very strong.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nothing compares to this until i said so and many have said so too😂its hard to move on.

I’m Emotionally Attached to a Chaebol Again!!
*UPDATE AFTER FINALE AIRING*:-Ok, I knew they will mess up the second half somehow, though I didn't know how! I paused watching after episode 8 so that the rest of the episodes will airing and then watch it all together. Now that I am done with this drama, I feel so irritated yet another part of me is content with how it ended. I guess the irritation and disappointment is because, they had so much scope with the storyline in the first half that they entirely ruined in the second.
Here are somethings that this drama ruined for me:
1. How come CSG accept the fact that SSR is from Joseon era so quickly? Like I mean if he had gotten all the memories or relived his past, of the ex-prince, then I get it, but no, she just says she is from different timeline and he is like ok... no big deal.
2. Whats with all the confusing time slips and time travel? I mean I am confused at even trying to make into words and jot it down here. So the present SSR time travelled to the Joseon Era as a kid while she was drowning and lived as Kang Dam shim? And then who was the girl/woman in the modern SSR, before the dethroned queen possessed her body? Did the OG young Kang Dam Shim take the modern SSR's young body? I mean!!!!! Arggghhh...
3. How many times did Shin Seo Ri fainted and was hospitalized? Like girl was fainted and in a hospital bed in every episode in the second half!
4. We only see Choi Mun Do ending up in prison. We don't see the court finding him guilty or his sentences. Neither any scene were he truly regrets his action or the way he ended up!
5. The Ex prince and modern day Shin Seo Ri/Kang Dam shim ending together... what was it? A dream? Alternate world? Or just their hope for their past selves?
6. ALSO, SSR has to go and break the prince's heart like that? Isn't he one and the same person? I thought they were and she knew, but then why was her confession to him, telling the prince that she loves and wants to save her man? I mean... WHAT?
7. How come the joseon queen become the king's wife from a mere court lady? If the prince was dead why did she even marry the king? Was she in love with him? The 1st episode made it look like they were... ahhhh
The only saving grace of this drama I find is HNJ's performance. I truly enjoyed his role and I guess if this was played by some other actor I would have long scrammed and not look back. The second half got me just because of him... I need to update my rating from 10 and bring it down to a 5 or 6! This drama could've had it all if not for the second half curse! Ah... when will kdrama land (especially the fantasy romcom's) ever get rid of that curse?

This is an ongoing show, but man oh man… how has this drama completely won me over in just 6 episodes?
I went in blind as always, only planning to check out the first 2 eps, but I ended up absolutely loving this drama. I’ve been laughing, swooning and genuinely having such a good time with it.
We’ve seen this trope a million times in dramaland, but somehow this drama makes it feel fresh, magical and hilarious all at once.
And the biggest reason? Cha Se Gye.
Another bratty chaebol who thinks he’s above everyone else but is secretly a soft-hearted loser who just needs love. We could spend all day listing his bratty predecessors in dramaland, but what makes him feel so unique and lovable is Heo Nam Jun’s performance. I LOVE IT!
Maybe I’ve just seen too many flat performances lately (you all know exactly who I mean… I mean there is so many lately), but seeing an actor with this much charm, nuance and expressive acting genuinely felt like lightning striking out of nowhere. He’s handsome, charismatic and every tiny facial expression lands perfectly. He somehow makes this cheesy chaebol trope feel worth watching again. I LOVE his performance. Ok, I need to stop proclaiming my love!
This drama deserves every bit of hype it’s getting now while airing. There are still 6 more episodes to go and I genuinely can’t wait to see where it goes.
I’m still a little skeptical about the Lim Ji Yeon’s performance… she is an amazing actress and I understand she’s supposed to be acting like a Joseon queen suddenly thrown into modern Seoul, but sometimes it feels a little too performative for me. I’m trying very hard to overlook it but honestly, most of the time I succeed, I do.. but occasionally it does get on my nerves.
But somehow… I forgive every tiny flaws in this drama. And that’s rare for me. Usually I’m way harsher. I swear there’s some kind of sorcery involved because this show has me completely wrapped around its finger.

The entanglements of the past can pull you into your future with some smoke.
This series gave me what I needed it to give me: Magic, romance, and comedy.My Royal Nemesis starts off strong, giving us a perfect FL in a very interesting, and dare I say, messed-up situation. Because of it, we get thrust into the future where we meet our dashing ‘Male Lead’ Heo Nam-jun (who I ended up adoring in this role). When these two meet, it’s the perfect caustic and chaotic joining that lets you know fate can be a mo’fo sometimes and all the way right. It also gives that ‘Twin? Where have you been?‘ energy. 😂 I absolutely enjoyed these two individually in their roles and together. Both actors are known for playing the perfect villains in K-dramas, and to have them join in this series as potential love interests...it freaking worked for me!
This series will give you laughs, drama, and twists with an enjoyable soundtrack as well. The show title is a perfect descriptor for everything going on in this drama’s world; just know that, cus ooowee... 😑I have some beeffffffff with our series villain. While the co-protagonists sure did work my left and right eyelids. 😖

Absolutely in love with this drama...perfect chemistry, acting..total joy
I am completely in love with this drama. Hooked from episode one all the way to the end—not a single boring episode. The storyline is incredibly engaging, blending present-day life with glimpses of past lives in a way that felt seamless and well-executed.The leads absolutely smashed their roles. Their chemistry? Fire. I was giggling and laughing out loud throughout. Watching their relationship evolve from something like enemies to lovers was such a joy—their interactions were fun, natural, and kept me smiling.
Ji Yeon's performance is outstanding. I loved her in The Tale of Lady Ok and The Glory, and she shines just as brightly here. Nam Jun is equally impressive—he acts so powerfully with just his eyes. I adored him in A Hundred Memories, one of my all-time favourites, and he had great chemistry with the lead there too. Here, the pairing is just perfect.
I binge-watched this over the weekend because I simply couldn't stop. I'm so glad we still get dramas like this. For me, this drama and To My Beloved Thief are the best of the year so far.
The story flows beautifully and the ending was satisfying. Yes, there are a few plot holes—like what really happened to the real Dan, etc.—but honestly? I didn't care. I was having too much fun with our couple to let those details bother me.
Verdict: A must-watch. Perfect chemistry, great story, and a total joy from start to finish.

A Good rom com drama done right
It gives off such a old school kdrama vibes which i actually love and i missed its been a while since i finally found a drama that got me hooked from the start up untill the end no boring moment every episode is good made me laugh,smile,giggle and give me a little bit of sad feeling🥰🥰 finally my long kdrama slump is broken now 🤣Im glad i actually i actually started without reading the reviews or comments first because i really enjoyed this one .. i really like the chemistry between the ml and fl especially the banters they have.. such a perfect match of craziness ..

One of the Best Rom-Coms of 2026
Trust me, don't let some people here fool you. This drama absolutely deserves all the hype and is 100% worth your time. It's so refreshing, with great writing, a beautiful OST, outstanding chemistry, and amazing acting, especially from Heo Nam Jun, he was so addicting and had me hooked the entire time.we got the Yearning King of the Year with Cha Se Gye, and I'm not accepting any arguments.And when they say it's a romcom, they actually mean it. It balances the romance and comedy so well (unlike some "romcoms" I could name... but I won't )
And yeah , the story had a few flaws and some questionable moments, but the ending completely made up for them. They wrapped it up beautifully.
I genuinely had the best time watching it. It pulled me out of my kdrama slump while it was airing, and now that it's over... I guess I'm going right back into that slump.
Now all I'm looking forward to is the SBS Drama Awards.

Surprising Hidden Gem!!!
I was scrolling through Netflix when this show caught my eye.I watched the trailed and got enthralled by it.
I wasn’t mistaken. This was such a great show to commit too.
It had so much comedic scenes I enjoyed watching it way more than I expected.
I love how the romance wasn’t rushed and how blunt and unhinged the main couple are. I also love how on top of the comedic romance, the plot also included a lifespan of tradegy filled life, heartfelt and money grubbing family and business drama, and showbiz endorser life. What a circus!
The show was such a hidden gem!
How they were able to weave such a great story from so many interweaving storylines is beyond me. But this was and is definitely a great show to watch.

In the sixth year of King Anjong's reign, Dan-shim died after being forced to drink poison. Her death triggered a shaman's spell, causing supernatural events such as a midsummer frost and a total lunar eclipse.However, her fate does not end with her death. Her soul awakens in 21st-century South Korea, inhabiting the body of Shin Seo-ri, an unknown actress who plays supporting roles in historical dramas. In this unfamiliar era, Dan-shim gradually takes control of Seo-ri's life and, due to her unpredictable nature, quickly adapts to the modern world. She crosses paths with Cha Se-gye, the ruthless heir to a business conglomerate. A tense and conflicted relationship develops between them, complicated by a love-hate dynamic.
As he ventures into this unfamiliar world, Kang Dan-shim realizes that this twist of fate offers him the opportunity to escape his predetermined destiny and transform his life.
The drama presents a unique and unusual premise: a Joseon-era villainess in modern-day Korea trying to adapt to this new and unfamiliar world. She meets a villain from that era, and through misunderstandings and humorous situations, they end up falling in love. I must say, the first episode was incredibly funny and captivated me. It was hilarious seeing Dan-sim's spirit in Seo-ri's body; I connected with her story. Unfortunately, not much happened in the following episodes, but I still enjoyed it. The series makes good use of comedy and humorous situations, which makes it very entertaining. My only issue was with Dan-sim's adaptation: how she learned to use a cell phone and how she navigated the city. I feel like these details were forgotten or overlooked. Another thing I must mention is the production design; it's spectacular, and they use very striking locations. Another point is that the drama falls into repeating the same cycle: they fight, apologize, and continue with the same thing. They couldn't maintain the tone of the first chapters, which was replaced by a sad one that fell into the same pattern. For that reason, overall, I give the story an 8.0/10.
The series doesn't have a huge cast of characters, but it does have quite a few, and they're diverse. Our main couple has great chemistry, that's something I have to say. I connected with Seo-ri's grandmother; her scenes brought tears to my eyes because they reminded me of spending time with my grandparents and taking care of them.
Here's my analysis of the main characters:
Shin Seo Ri / Kang Dan Shim (Lim Ji-yeon):
Shin Seo-ri: An aspiring actress, she was known for her starring role as a child in the drama Sonagi, but as an adult, she became an unknown actress. Later, she is possessed by the spirit of Kang Dan-shim, a villain from the Joseon era, and develops a cruel personality.
Kang Dan-shim: Dan-shim is a ruthless and cunning concubine of the Joseon Dynasty, known as the most hated villain of the court. She rose from humble origins to the position of first-rank concubine without strong support, relying on her sharp wit and manipulative tactics. She possesses an incredibly developed sixth sense. After dying by poisoning, she awakens 300 years later, in 2026, and inhabits the body of Shin Seo-ri, who is filming a poisoning scene for a historical drama. In this new world, she crosses paths with Cha Se-gye, who could be her last chance to change her fate. She also decides to continue pursuing Seo-ri's dream of becoming a famous actress.
I must say that Lim Ji-yeon's acting is very good, how she manages to make Dan-sim feel like she's in an unfamiliar world, and her performance is very funny, how she doesn't back down from anyone and calls the other actress a whore, and the slapping scene was very good to watch.
Cha Se-gye / Grand Prince Cheongheon (Yi Hyeon): (Heo Nam-jun)
Cha Se-gye: The infamous third-generation heir of the Chail Group and CEO of Biojei, he is known as a "monster of capitalism." When he crosses paths with Seo-ri, who is possessed, he confronts her.
Yi-hyeon: A solitary figure marked by past trauma, he wore a half-mask to hide the facial scars from a mysterious fire from which he alone survived. In contrast to Ajong, who represents "light," he is described as "shadow." In his previous life, he was the youngest son of King Mukjong and the younger brother of King Anjong, and a scholar who saved Dan-shim from being confined in a chest of rice.
This is the first time I've seen Heo Nam-jun in a leading role; the first time I saw him was in "When the Phone Rings," and I must say he manages to capture that essence of an arrogant chaebol who just needs to be loved. His acting is cold, but at the same time, he manages to convey the love he has for Seo-ri.
Choi Mun-do (Jang Seung Jo): President of Chail Construction and Se-gye's cousin. He repeatedly tried to gain the attention of his uncle, Dal-su. He even offered to be a liver donor for his uncle, who was suffering from acute liver failure. After becoming president of Chail Construction, he considered the position insufficient and continued to aspire to his uncle's position, while perceiving Cha Se-gye as his superior.
I'd never seen this actor before, and I have to say his character is so detestable. Even as a child, he's always wanted attention, and even having a son doesn't change his mindset. I just hope he gets what he deserves.
Overall, I give the acting a 9.0/10.
The OST isn't particularly noteworthy; the only song I like is "Anyway," though who knows if I'll like the others. THAT'S WHY I GIVE IT A 7.5/10.
Would I watch it again? Probably. I think it's an excellent drama for when you need a touch of comedy and romance, so I'm giving it an 8.0/10.
In short, My Royal Nemesis is an excellent drama if you're looking for one that blends romantic comedy with touches of fantasy, perfect for a boring weekend. It's a story with endearing and diverse characters, and funny situations that will make you laugh. Overall, I'm giving it an 8.0/10 so far

A marvelous experience to watch as an avid kdrama watcher & lover since 2020!
I'm so glad I finished it today. The last few episodes really made me cry. In my past few years of watching a ton of kdramas, no other kdrama has made me cry this much before. They truly did exceptionally well with the entire show. It was a marvelous experience to watch. I am forever not gonna forget the last few lines of the series as it really struck a chord in my heart. The phrases & words "holding on" and "freely" will always stick with me thanks to them. The ending left me a lasting impression of feeling hopeful in the days to come too. I think this series is like one of those scent that you'd never forget no matter where you are. The connection of rain to this series is superb to me. Kudos to the entire cast, director, script writers, and pretty much the whole team for all their hard work in bringing this drama to life. Successful Old Formula
Okay i was quite picky with K-drama and actually i make some draft of my review only to be deleted by system. So I made this review quite late. Personally I think Lim Jiyeon is sole key on this drama, her characters were quite remarkable for Shin Seori to Kang Dang Shim with completely different way of speaking and she always nailed since i watched her in High Society. The chemistry between Lim Jiyeon and Heo Namjun was quite okay for me even it not on the level with overload sparks and it feels minimal due the duration since they got 14 episodes. The emotion about Seori struggles are quite emotional.Heo Namjun as Cha Segye are quite call for current Male Lead of k-drama. Yeah Segye was quite red-flag boss in real life (when he sad, employees need to suffer to) but somehow get interested with Seori. The Romantic Comedy in this drama was quite practical and some of his speech were quite witty. Cha Segye secretary were quite talented for making impromptu comedy and the banter were quite fun to watch.
My cons about this drama was the ending was quite rushed and feels anticlimax about Mundo action. Mo Tae Hui acting stills need to be refined since most of her part was quite stiff.
Still deserve to be rewatched.
