Differences between the show and the original novels

I’ve seen people say that the show changed many things from the original novel. Can anyone share the main things that were changed?

Main thing would be how watered down Lu Feng's character is. They whitewashed him enough there are actually people on his side lmao. In the novel, he's a standard abusive and toxic gong. He rapes yi chen multiple times, beat the shit out of him when he tried to resign, cheats on him, drugs and confines him and technically makes yi chen rape another character under the influence of the drug, which also happens to be his nephew (and as a bonus, technically also his son's lover smh). This other character is also raped by Lu feng himself. Basically he's an irredeemable asshole that the show had to censor while keeping the important parts lol.

Plus point, yi chen and lu feng also have a questionable age gap that get's him in trouble for indecent association with a minor. Why? Because yi chen was around 14 whereas lu feng was18 when they first started their relationship. Yi chen is a genius who skipped grades and landed right into the trap called Lu Feng.

Other changes would be the separation. Their second separation is 20 years long and both of them have children (Zhou wen yang and Ke Luo). Yi chen with his wife zhou lan (divorced) and Lu feng with his one night stand. He never tells Ke Luo about their actual relationship and leads him to believe he's his Uncle. The rest is pretty standard to the show, but like extreme, as mentioned above. Lu Feng even tapes yi chen doing that to his own nephew and son in law (???) and sends it to his son (zwy). His son also walks in on them. There's more in the lan lin universe but i haven't read them.

It's pretty dire and i would not recommend if you're not into toxic bl. They're probably going to follow the same in the last few episodes after yi chen wakes up from his coma as well. Oh and yes, they have a happy ending...in an objective sense.

It's not just LF character, they also removed a lot of YC's bad decision from, well, Qin Lang to marrying Zhou Lan as a business decision instead of a spur of moments decision that he made because LF killed his mom and ruined his life, LF, and Zhou Lan as well as their future kid. Some more small plot decision that was not "revealed" until the very end as well like LF never truly talk about YC never choosing him at all at every single crossroads they face in their life until 20 years later.

There are a lot of minor details changed too, like LF had been obsessing with YC from highschool which is only in the show, or their first date being in a high end restaurant when in the book it was at KFC.

Speaking of major plot difference, they also changed the years of separation from 20 years to 5 years which, obviously, changes a lot of things. They also changed what happened during LF kidnapping, removing some incorrigible stuff LF did. And also the after effect of the Gun Wound. YC could no longer work or even do things that require more extensive use of brain. Like, he used to deal with computer, now he can only work at library and uses his memory. He cannot even peel shrimp properly without LF help.

The book is definitely more angst because, well, it is dark romance, and one of the best piece of dark romance. The show definitely make it a LOT more pallatable for public, but it sacrifice what made the book was hailed as one of the best piece of Chinese first gen BL Angst.

One of my favorite line from the book vol. 3, "I wept for his wasted youth, for his bruised heart, and for the love that he was bereft of that I took for granted". that line, is only as strong as it is because of the horrible journey that this two had gone through, especially it was said after LF, who he himself from vol.1 said wasn't good with words and talking about his feelings, finally talked about his feelings to YC.

It's definitely not for the faint hearted tho
