  • Unnatural

    1. Unnatural

    Japanese Drama - 2018, 10 episodes

    10

I was quite surprised by this series.  It is clean and intelligent giving us an in depth cross section of society, how it nurtures us and how it can destroy us and how to rise above the chaos and maintain our morality.

I will definitely watch this again in a few years.

  • Anti-Hero

    2. Anti-Hero

    Japanese Drama - 2024, 10 episodes

    9.5

This was interesting.  The acting was brilliant.

DEDUCTIONS AFTER FIRST 2 EPISODES...POSSIBLE SPOILERS.

The DA is fecking psycho creepy right from the beginning, which makes it obvious that all sub plots would lead to him.

The ML is the typical dark,  broody type that one expects from any Asian based drama,  while being unapologetically cruel, distant and very much driven by a private agenda.  He is obviously the anti hero,  thus he is as obviously, the hero.

I must admit, it took longer to figure out that the female attorney was working with the ML, I usually spot this shit early...well done writers.  That she wasn't corrupt was evident in all of her behaviour.  However, I caught on to the female judge immediately, and I mean immediately, was that the writing or the directing/producing that didn't hide that well?

The young lad in the office,  I rather enjoyed watching him grow up.

The cop's daughter...I admire her for choosing to adhere to the truth rather than trying to bury it to protect her father.

The other young lass, I didn't believe for a second that she'd jumped ship and gone over to the enemy...that made even less sense than a platypus.

The other gentleman in the office...I thoroughly enjoyed his character, I really wish he'd had a larger part to play.

I'll watch this again in a few years.

  • Saiai

    3. Saiai

    Japanese Drama - 2021, 10 episodes

    SPOILERS

This title was a pain in the butt to find.  On Netflix it is call Dearest.  When you type that into google or MDL, quite a few items pop up, just not what you want.   I had to find an actor name, then search them, then find all the shows they did in 2021 until I found one that had the same cast as Dearest...REALLY?????!!!!!

I kept getting deja vu all the way through this...is it a remake of something?  Is something else a remake of this?

Anyway, I enjoyed it even though all of the character plots played out the way I expected from early in the game... except for the circumstances of female reporter/rape victim's death.  Firstly,  I was quite surprised she lived as long as she did given how abusive,  vindictive and self-richous she was toward everyone around her and even more surprised that it was accidental.

It did force me to think from time to time, so it gets credit for that.  Acting was brilliant.  I rather like the fact that I've watched 3 Japanese dramas today and all of them seem to have cast people for their obvious talent rather than to grab cheap ratings by throwing in talentless eye candy...no, I'm NOT saying that eye candy = no talent...but you don't EVER see a non eye candy main cast and their immediate supporting cast = no talent...think about that.

    I will watch this again.
