BL's you can't miss

1. I Told Sunset about You
Thai Drama - 2020, 5 episodes
I have to rewatch this to give a better opinion but this made me feel stuff
-
2. Not Me
Thai Drama - 2021, 14 episodes
I KNOW. The sponsors are weirdly placed and the soundtrack is the shittiest playlist of non-copyrighted music... but hear me out.
It's a series focusing on political injustice and the fight against oppression. It shows real life situations, it adressess actual political issues in modern Thailand, it uses art to give another layer to the story and it's just full of conflict.
The ending feels a little bit unresolved but I feel like the moral there is... There is always a bigger fish. And change comes in waves and little actions, even if those little actions cost your life.ALSO Gun's acting is SUMBLIME you can tell which character he's playing just by looking in his eyes. That performance alone is worth everything.

3. KinnPorsche
Thai Drama - 2022, 14 episodes
Oh my, this show. I know that people sell this show purely bc of the production value as well as the 21+ scenes but there is so much more to this show. Let's adress the NC elephant in the room first. Yes, there are very graphic scenes but they are placed carfully throughout the show and you wil not see sexual content unless it is necessary for characterization or for the plot to move forward. The storyline is a bit messy at certain points and the pacing might be very ngl but the way they portray intimacy and vulnerbility is the strong point of this show. You will witness some of the most raw emotions I have ever witnessed. The cinematography and subtext the colorists gifted us with are mesmerizing. There are many dead people, just a warning.
UPDATE: I've though a lot about this, and I stand by it's status as a must watch, bue i also stand by the fact that the peak of this show is its representations on codependency, abuse, and other things that are mostly not in the novel and do not involve the ridiculous plotline -
4. Rak Diao
Thai Drama - 2022, 15 episodes
Alright I know thai sitcoms can be a bit of a mess, but this one actually made me fall in love. It plays with power dynamics and doesn't deal in absolutes. It's lighthearted and funny, and while it follows overused sitcom tropes the acting and the chemistry between the characters take it to a different level. It might take a while to get used to the pre-recorded laughs or maybe you'll miss out on most thai-related jokes but it's worth it.

5. Blueming
Korean Drama - 2022, 11 episodes
This masterpiece finally talks about how speaking up about trauma is not always easy or a choice. A lot of people are involved in traumatic events, and perspective is always a factor. Perspective plays a strong role on life, and this is great example of it. Also, the story is not typical or boring. Violently recommended.

6. HIStory3: Make Our Days Count
Taiwanese Special - 2019, 20 episodes
Alright so this is a really beautiful show portraying different struggles of teenagers in different situations. Age difference, estrangement from family because of sexual orientation, having to work while underage, and.. grief.
Let me warn you, the ending is very sad but it makes sense and I will post an article defending it very soon. You cannot miss this, it's one of the few shows that has managed to make me cry and experience loss like never before. -
7. Life: Love on the Line (Director's Cut)
Japanese Movie - 2020
-
8. Manner of Death
Thai Drama - 2020, 14 episodes
Uhm... murder mystery in a secluded town dealing with themes of corruption, prostitution, and violence un rural areas. What else do you need? Handsome doctor and the first person he suspects are drawn towards one another as they fight to solve the murder of a young teacher. Great acting, amazing plot development and great MAXTUL chemistry.

9. Stuck on You
Filipino Drama - 2021, 8 episodes
We know covid and lock-down inspired a series of BL's from the Philippines such as the famour Gamerboys but this one just might be my favourite. Two very oposite boys get stuck on the same house. One is idealistic having never experienced love and the other one now bitter and heartboken believes in nothing. While putting down their walls feelings arise, but feeling are more complex than you think.
A great debate on love and experience. Not your typical happy ending miracle. But its real, and it tastes like mistakes you'll never regret.

10. Utsukushii Kare
Japanese Drama - 2021, 6 episodes
This deals with the topic of unrequited love (?) and idealizing the person you like. A story that develops over years with intricate characters that start off as clichés but turn out to be so much more. Honestly some of the best stuff I've seen. Instead of the typical popular boy meets weirdo, we encounter a two characters that are both confused and in love in the same strange ways. A perfect view on unconventional love.

11. Zettai BL ni Naru Sekai VS Zettai BL ni Naritakunai Otoko
Japanese Special - 2021, 1 episode
This is a BL parody that's weird and hilarious while develpoing a sweet love story. Not only serious BL's are great, also funny and crack series are an important part of this genre.
Watch it, and come fight me if you don't like it -
12. The Miracle of Teddy Bear
Thai Drama - 2022, 16 episodes
Do you want a BL that is heartwrenching and unconventional? Do you like it when the industry is exposed? Watch this masterpiece. A Teddy bear turned into a human must learn to bear the heavy weight of human emotion and the complexity of human relationships. It is not only a romance, it speaks of loss, grief, homophobia, abuse, mental illness, toxic parental figures, trauma and corruption. You cannot miss this. You will most likely cry at some point in the series, as the way everything is portrayed is raw and heavy. Dw, there's still some comic relief to help you get through it but YOU WILL CRY

13. 180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us
Thai Drama - 2022, 8 episodes
Fuck, it's been weeks and my heart still longs and aches for this series.
The complexity of human emotion masterfully portrayed in a theatre-esque manner. A breathtaking mixture of theater, cinematography, and layers upon layers of meaning and intention. I believe there is not a single line out of place in this series.I tells a the story of love, loss, pain, loneliness, guilt, sexuality, youth and tiredness where opposing forces meet to make bloom a love that, despite being powerful, it might have been broken from the beginning.
I do not want to talk about this a lot because you have to experience this yourself, but this is another one of those BL's qhere there's no bad guy, there's no "bad" or "good" ending, there's just life and all that comes with it.This might top ITSAYfor me. If you love philosophy, art, deep conversations and impressive dialogues on top of some of the most sublime and impactful acting performances you'll love this. If you prefer the shallow end of the pool, maybe skip this one, because such a lifechanging series was not made for the faint of heart, and people who need everything obvious and on display.

14. On Cloud Nine
Thai Drama - 2022, 6 episodes
Many people have disagreed with me every time I praise this series, but I will never stop.
It tells a story through small details and clues, while mantaining a non-linear narrative. It's breathtaking shots of Chiang Mai along with the whole premise will make you feel a sense of wonder that's tough to accomplish.
Spoiler time... it's about death. But usually, when encountering series that deal with this situation we always receive sad endings or tough reflections on mourning, but never this series. In its 6 episodes it managed to tell me in the most beautiful way possible "We all die, and that's not sad". It tore me apart with the overwhelming sense of peace it evoked in me, while keeping its puzzling and mysterious vibe.
It brings tears to my eyes and comfort to my spirit, and I will eternally be thankful for it. -
15. The Eighth Sense
Korean Drama - 2023, 10 episodes
This is a work of art, and I mean in in every sense. A story about fear, trauma, loneliness and struggle, but also about bravery, new beginnings, change and healing. It's a series that despite the country it was produced in, tackled a narrative that brings many things into the light, including depression, communication, respect, and therapy without idealizing the romance it portrays. It understood what it wanted to be, and the director seemed to understand how incredibly versatile the visual medium is, so it plays with the editing, the transitions, the frames, the colors, it visually tells a story as well. It's subtext, it's details, it's knowing perfectly how the world they buitl works. It's pure artistry, and that makes it feel grounded, real, personal. You cannot ignore this series, as it is beautiful, heartwrenching, exciting and warm.

21. Unknown
Taiwanese Drama - 2024, 12 episodes
I hadn't felt so physically affected by a show since forever. An impactful and complex tale of a kid who despite having to make a living for him and his sister after becoming orphans, decides to tke in an abandoned child who sleeps at the stairs near his house. In a way that's meant to tear at your heartstrings until you bleed, we witness love bloom in the younger kid for his brother and saviour. The cinematography alone deserves an award, the acting will destroy you, and the moments of silence, the little things, the intimacy, the closeness, the discourse reminding us how family can be chosen and built slowly and steadily. This is beautiful, and a wonderful example of the possibilities of QL shows in general.

22. Right Time, Right You
Thai Special - 2023, 2 episodes
I died watching this. I died a million times and I will never be the same after this two episode masterpiece. Following the story of a years-long unrquited love that suddenly appears at the main character's doorstep with a broken heart and a story of trauma and abuse. Tasting of slow cinema we see someone who is utterly disenchanted by the idea of love be comfronted with someone who's idea of love is him. Opposites meet. Emotions flow. Its so human because we don't paint bad guys or point fingers, we just feel embody pain and we allow us to feel it. With some of the most brilliantly directed scenes I've ever watched, it perfectly portrays those moments of uncertainty where life doesn't seem to move forward and time stops. The feeling of fragile possibility.
"It could be extraordinary"
