Sci-Fi

I love Sci-Fi. From Star Wars and Star Trek (only seen Next Gen... >.>), Stargate (Atlantis was on TV so I watched that one first... hence the link... >.>) and Babylon 5, Doctor Who(I've seen old who too) and Firefly(no I haven't watched Serenity), and Guardians of the Galaxy, I love to see how people each can imagine the future or how space is like. To see the worlds and places they come up with. Not to mention the wide range of characters they can then add to their worlds.

Honestly I was a bit sad at the lack of them I saw when I started K-dramas. Of course new worlds opened up and I am a fan of many genres, but always somewhat missed this. So of course when recently (Feb 2021) a new movie came out that was what I was missing exactly, and after watching it, this list needed to be made. >.<

  • Are You Human Too?

    1. Are You Human Too?

    Korean Drama - 2018, 36 episodes

    9.5

A robotic engineer misses her son  who was taken from her from her father-in-law. So what does she do? Why make a realistic human robot with AI based off of pictures of her son of course. :D

But wait, now her son is in trouble and robot boy has to pretend to be him, but when feelings develop, and the robot seems to have a mind of his own, the question comes, should he be considered a robot or his own person?

  • Circle

    2. Circle

    Korean Drama - 2017, 12 episodes

    9.5

A k-drama that seriously tempted me in starting a list like this, Circle includes aliens! (though that point isn't really addressed... instead left for a possible season 2?
Instead, Circle mostly focuses on a dystopian future where people can access your memories through a sort of... memory card... >.>. This allows them to create a city where trauma can be erased, there are no crimes, and everyone is happy... or are they? (I did say dystopian didn't I?) There are clones, aliens, and you watch two timelines simultaneously.

Phenomenal acting, an intriguing plot to keep you guessing, and really cool elements...
I can never recommend this drama enough. Go watch it if you haven't yet! >.<

  • Duel

    3. Duel

    Korean Drama - 2017, 16 episodes

    9.0

Duel introduces secretly created clones to modern day. Only two exist as a somewhat successful experiment. Separated at a young age as they try to escape, one had a better fate than the other.
A police's daughter is kidnapped, and in an attempt to find her, DNA leads to one clone, who doesn't quite remember himself that he's a clone. Together the two try to find the girl, and uncover what's been occurring behind closed doors.

Hard to watch at times, this is a definite must watch for Yang Se Jong's acting (chef's kiss).

  • Kung Fu Traveler

    4. Kung Fu Traveler

    Chinese Movie - 2017

    4.0
  • Rugal

    5. Rugal

    Korean Drama - 2020, 16 episodes

    8.0

I hesitate putting this on the list... I mean by all rights... that technology... it technically deserves to be on this list. It's probably just me, but I really see this as a superhero origin movie than really Sci-fi...

Anyway! After his wife is murdered, our soon to be cyborg's eye's get plucked out by a soaring underground gang (guess what part of him becomes cyborg lol). After some grieving, risky eye surgery, agreeing to be a top secret spy cyborg, and training, he's ready to join the crew of similarly wronged cyborgs, and their engineer/doctors, to take down this lethal organization, save live, and right their wrongs.

(I'm literally just calling them cyborgs because it's technically true and sound more sci-fi-y to me >.<)

  • Space Sweepers

    6. Space Sweepers

    Korean Movie - 2021

    9.0

And finally the movie responsible for me finally making this list.

I was so excited for this movie to come out on netflix. Sci-fi? with Song Joon Ki and Kim Tae Ri? Yes please!
Space Sweepers is your quintessential Sci-fi. One look at the poster will tell you that. It's nothing new in the genre, but it is great fun. Come join the crew made up of a female captain, a father in search of his daughter, a once drug lord, and a ex-military trans robot.
The visuals are amazing, there are some points I personally feel the CGI could have been better, but for the most part there is no problem, and as I said, the production of this film is amazing. I think that's where this film really excels, I was swept off my feet into the future this world presents and was able to totally buy into it. (except for some physics problems when they are in space... but again these are only a few moments) Of course the actors did a great job as well... but given the cast I knew that would happen.

Personal favorite part was the inclusion of the ear translators that allowed actors to speak in their own language and gave a reason for why everyone could understand. Our main crew speaks Korean of course, but there is a dizzy-ing array of many other languages spoken; English, thFrench, German, Danish, Filipino, Chinese, Spanish, Nigerian pidgin, Russian
(Disclaimer: Some of the languages written are ones I've heard others notice... I do not know nearly enough to pick out them all >.<)
