MY JOURNEY | Super Sentai
This list shows my journey through Super Sentai that I have finished or dropped. My journey started in January 2024. I write down some thoughts and favorite things about each show I watched. No major spoilers.

1. Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger
Japanese Drama - 2023, 50 episodes
King-Ohger was my very first toku show and therefore my first Super Sentai. Down I go into the rabbit hole. Hello, my new obsession.
It was strange at first and it took me a few months to watch the first half of the series, but after a certain point there was no turning back.
I really like the world building with the different kingdoms and the insect theme. Most of the series takes place in front of green screens, which makes the experience all the more unique. The questionable quality of the green screens reminds me of old video games like Final Fantasy. I love it. It has a lot of charm.
This sentai is very plot-heavy. The second half in particular had me in a chokehold. It was an epic spectacle. I grew to love the characters more and more during their adventure and shed a few tears in the finale.
Favorite characters: Gira, Jeramie, Yanma
Favorite suits: Spider Kumonos, Kuwagata Ohger

2. Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger: In Space
Japanese Special - 2024, 1 episode
Well... this was very underwhelming. The plot's not good. And it's way too short for that kind of story.
-
3. Avataro Sentai Donbrothers
Japanese Drama - 2022, 50 episodes
It's my second Super Sentai that I finished.
Wow, I kinda binged that one. What a wonderful time I had. This is my favorite kind of crazy. I can't even explain what exactly happened here. You have to experience it for yourself. WAHAHAHA!
Favorite characters: Taro, Sonoi
Favorite suits: DonMomotaro, SaruBrother

4. Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger vs. Donbrothers

5. Avataro Sentai Donbrothers The Movie: New First Love Hero
Japanese Movie - 2022
This is like a fever dream. So freaking hilarious, I love it.

6. Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger
Japanese Drama - 2021, 49 episodes
It's my third Super Sentai that I finished.
A feel good show. It's loud, it's funny, it's colorful, it's odd and all around very charming. Kaito has so much energy. Only good vibes are allowed!
I love that the MOTW are worlds - for example, we have trash world, door world, mochi world, vacation world... it's creative and caused a lot of strange and chaotic situations.
The antagonist Stacey is the real highlight of this Sentai, in my opinion. His story is well told and such a rollercoaster ride of emotions.
And I absolutely love Twokaiser's dance!
Favorite characters: Stacey, Gaon, Kaito
Favoite suits: Zenkaizer
(finished watching on 25 October 2024)

7. Avataro Sentai Donbrothers vs. Zenkaiger
Japanese Movie - 2023
It's okay... I just wished for more interactions between Zenkaiger and Donbrothers.

8. Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger
Japanese Drama - 2024, 48 episodes
Boonboomger is the first Sentai I watched weekly on air and my fourth one that I finished.
I have built a strong bond with all the characters over the year. I really love the whole Boonboomger team. The characters feel real. They have hopes, fears and struggles that are believable and relatable.
Taiya is a really good, calm and smart team leader. All the team dynamics work wonderfully and make me happy. I especially like the dynamics between Taiya and Ishiro and Mira and Jou. Shirabe and Boomy were also a wonderful surprise and have such sweet and funny scenes together. Genba is so cuddly and Sakito has such a captivating aura.
I love the suits with the wheels as helmets. I love the three Sanseaters a.k.a. Team Rocket. I also love the filler episodes because they always put a smile on my face.
I cried a lot, especially in the last few episodes, out of joy and sadness. Thank you Boonboomger, for this unforgettable time.
Favorite characters: the whole team, but especially Taiya and Ishiro
Favorite suits: Boonboomger champion suits (these jackets are awesome), BoonViolet, Waruido Spindo (I despise him but he looks so damn fine)

9. Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger GekijoBoon! Promise the Circuit
Japanese Movie - 2024
It's simple but very very fun. Go Mira!
-
10. Mashin Sentai Kiramager: Episode ZERO
Japanese Movie - 2020
It's a good short introduction of how the main team came together (except the red ranger). Also contains some information about the plot and enemies. I recommend to watch this before the first episode.

11. Mashin Sentai Kiramager
Japanese Drama - 2020, 45 episodes
It's my fifth Super Sentai that I finished.
It was a charming and glittering adventure. I like the whole team. Everyone has to take care of their real job in addition to their duties as Kiramager.
Juruu is a high school student (and despite being the youngest, he's the leader of the team - I love that), Tametomo is an e-sports gamer, Sena is a runner, Sayo is a surgeon and Shiguru is an actor. Here and there we get insights into these fields of activity - I particularly liked the episodes focused on Shiguru. It was always very delightful and funny to see him working on set. (The actor also showed really good facial expressions and gestures, even in scenes where he is just in the background. Keep an eye on him. It's great.)
Creativity and imagination play a big role in the series. Juruu is the pioneer in this respect - he is an artist and helps the team with his ideas to find new ways to defeat the enemies. He draws his ideas in a sketchbook and they come to life. The rest of the team also proves over time that they have great imagination. Together they make each other shine more and more.
I like the plot surrounding Crystalia. Admittedly, I couldn't really get on with the villains - I found Yodonna in particular rather exhausting and irritating. But the course of the plot was interesting and well structured for me. I also think that Kiramager is very beginner-friendly.
Favorite characters: Juruu, Shiguru, Tame, Sayo
Favorite suits: Kiramai Yellow, Kiramai Red

12. Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger
Japanese Drama - 2018, 51 episodes
It's my sixth Super Sentai that I finished.
Having two sentai teams on opposite sides of the law is a really exciting concept. On the one side we have the Lupinrangers - the thieves - and on the other the Patrangers - the police officers. I can't say exactly which team I liked best because I think they're both really good. But the Lupinrangers definitely had the most stylish roll call.
The plot is very character-driven, which I absolutely love. Each ranger gets their own time to shine. We get to know interesting character traits, backgrounds and motivations of each of them.
The Lupinrangers need to get all the Lupin collection pieces back from the Ganglers - the enemies (they reminded me of a mafia) - to save their loved ones, while the Patrangers want to both fight the Ganglers' threat and catch the thieves to keep the city and its inhabitants safe. So both teams are fighting for a good cause. I really enjoyed this plot.
I particularly liked it when the two teams interacted with each other as normal civilians. The Lupinrangers always had to be careful not to reveal their true identities. Wonderful and funny friendships were formed over time. Probably the most emotional bond was between the two Reds - Kairi (Lupin Red) and Keichiiro (Patren 1).I also liked the jazz soundtrack. This music suited the Lupinrangers and constantly reminded me of Persona 5.
Favorite characters: Kairi, Noel, Keichiiro, Sakuya
Favorite suits: Lupin Red, Lupin X, Patren X
