To be fair, the show is very overt in its portrayal of the town as a town of fate

The twisted hand of fate runs right through the twisted wreckage of that shopping mall

Plot hole - if he really did see her at a wedding and basically fall in love at first sight how on earth did he not recognize her when they first met??? I call BS

When Chekov's orphanage shows up, you know there will be a childhood connection reveal in the final act

They're in the past, making connections, so yeah
