    1. Assassination

    Korean Movie - 2015

    9.0

Wow! "Assassination" is such a good film! The actors did an amazing job and the plot was really good. Soma commented that the first bit was a bit boring or slow, but I believe that it was impactful. The first hour built the setting for the last 80 minutes and it was absolutely necessary, and in my opinion not boring at all. I absolutely love stories set during the Japanese invasion, be it Korean or Chinese, and this one deffo did not disappoint! I can absolutely recommend everyone to watch this film. Beware, the film doesn't ignore the horrors of the time, but that made the film so much more impactful! The ending as well. War criminals, despite evidence, still roam around in freedom. I rate this a 9/10. Now, go watch it!

  • Detective Chinatown

    2. Detective Chinatown

    Chinese Movie - 2015

    7.5

"Detective Chinatown" is a very comedic film. Don't watch it if you want to have any seriousness as you won't find it in this film. The humour is not always my type but it was still very enjoyable to watch. I watched it during work (please don't tell my workplace lol) as I didn't need to focus the whole time. I am looking forward to watching the other parts as a bit of a comedic relief is always grand. A 7.5/10. Quite enjoyable and recommendable for those who seek comedy.

  • Northern Limit Line

    4. Northern Limit Line

    Korean Movie - 2015

    9.0

This is a tough film. Based on true events, "Northern Limit Line" shows the events of the Battle of Yeongpyeong in 2002. The characters are based on real people, some losing their lives protecting their fellow soldiers and their country. The first hour was fairly boring; however, it reminded me of my father's stories about his military service in the Navy. Most days were boring and routine. And, honestly, I reckon everyone prefers those days over engaging in a battle. Therefore, I found the first hour crucial for creating a basis for what life as a sailor looks like. It also helped the viewer to connect with the sailors from PKM-357. As soon as the setting was created, the film shifted to the planning of the altercation and, eventually, to the Battle of Yeongpyeong itself. The battle and the ending greatly portrayed how unnecessary and heartbreaking that day was. No one gained anything from the altercation, but the lives of 19 sailors in total (North and South Korean) were lost, many more injured. I loved that they included film material from 2002, though they absolutely broke my heart. The interviews at the end were also so heartbreaking: The survivors talking about their fellow soldiers and their experience, their emotions so strong. I recommend this film. It leaves you absolutely heartbroken.
