Nine est né dans la ville de Busan, en Corée du Sud. Vers 2015, Nine a déménagé de Busan à Gimhae, dans la province de Gyeongsang du Sud, en Corée du Sud, où il a étudié au lycée Gimhae Gyeongwon. Lors de sa première année de lycée, il a tenté de s'inscrire au club de radiodiffusion, mais n'a pas été retenu. À la place, Nine a dû auditionner pour le club de danse, bien qu'il n'ait pas dansé depuis l'école primaire. En troisième et dernière année de lycée, il est président du club STEAM (science, technologie, ingénierie, art et mathématiques). En dernière année, il a été transféré au lycée Gyeonggi, où il a obtenu son diplôme.
En 2016, Nine a auditionné à Séoul pour BlockBerryCreative, sur la recommandation d'un ami de son club de danse. Le 28 mai 2019, Nine a fait ses débuts en tant que membre d'OnlyOneOf avec la sortie de leur 1er mini album "dot point jump".
