It means making characters black or white. In the novel, these characters are all morally grey and do questionable stuff. Making whitewashing will reduce the essence of characterization. K-dramas often like to whitewash the main character as good. As a person who read the novel, I don't want that here. I have a high expectations since the casting has done right.

Hope they won't whitewash these morally grey characters.

MDL editors are very biased towards him. If it's happened to someone else (even with less controversial cases), they would report everything and present them in the front page. For him, they made so much efforts to defend and save him. It's very obvious.
